I'm posting this on behalf of the store.

Event:
$500 CASH Legacy Tournament

Where:
Die Hard Games
1005 Main St - Suite 2230
Pawtucket, RI

When:
September 13, 2008

Registration starts at 10:00 AM, tournament will start between 11:30 - 12:00.

Entry Fee:
$20

DCI Santioned:
YES

Prize Structure:
1: $250
2: $125
3: $75
4: $50

Top 4 prizes guaranteed regardless of attendance

5-8:
$20 store credit for less than 34 people.
$20 cash for 34-39 people
$25 cash for 40+ people (making it a Magic 600! )

Side Events: TBA

This event can't be overlooked. I've been to the previous three DHG Magic 500's and they've all been stellar tourneys. They only had 12 people for the last one and still gave out the entire $500 as advertised. I know in order for them to keep holding these they absolutely cannot have another turnout that low so my hope is people come out to support the format and a great store.

I'll have updates as soon as I get them.

See you September 13th! =)

there are three places where I can get off:

North Main & Branch
North Main & Hillside
Main & Roosevelt

not sure which one is quickest, been starring at Google maps for about an hour and cant seem to find the right one.

I think I might make a trip down beforehand just so i know How to get there. what other events do they hold on the weekends or Fridays?

North Main and Branch is like a 20+ minute walk. I'm not familiar with the other stops.

They have FNM on Friday that gets 20-35 people. $5 entry standard. That starts at 7.

There isn't alot of other scheduled events during the week but Mondays and Wednesdays are big draft days.

There are always people during the week but best days to go are Wed/Fri.

Good to hear you're in the area, me/Eli are always looking to test legacy =0

Friday would be your best bet to stop by, but I'll see you whenever.

Less than one week away, who is going? I also would like to ask everyone's General opinion. If we do not meet the 25 players needed for this tourney, I feel DHG should cut the prize down a little so that they do not need to take as much of a loss in that end. I am hoping to bring a car load except (no promises). Also, I will be hopefully be revealing the 5th Ann playmat either this weekend or next weekend. It looks nice

The thought is nice Bill but even if they had a low turnout the $500 is given out regardless. If I'm the only one there I get it... and no one wants to see that happen :p

There's no reason to think they'll get 12 people again though. I honestly chalk that up as a fluke since they had 25 for the first and 35 for the second one. I think they'll have a good turnout for this since it doesn't conflict with anything and the buzz appears to have been good. I was recently at a large tourney where several people told me they'd be showing up, so that's encouraging.

Keep in mind the more people they get the more prizes they'll be able to give out. I know they want to do a side tourney of some sort as well but that all depends on the turnout.

Well that's really all I can add. I know the owners are looking forward to this very much and honestly these are my favorite tournaments (and I go to ALOT :p). There's really nothing more I can say other than if you enjoy legacy and live relatively close you really should try to make it.

Hopefully see everyone there.

Here's how my day went
Round 1: some kid playing sui black. He plays turn 1 hippie. I start dropping elves. He does not attack with the hippie. I win. 2nd match he gets control with I regain control and win

1-0

Round 2: My opponent is playing 2 land belcher

1-1

Round 3 Garret He is playing faeries. I take control early and overcome what little he has and win. 2nd match I drop leyline of Lifeforce and trade blows until he is overcome by Elves

2-1

Round 4 PTPaul playing Painter Servant Round 1 elves overcame the control aspect and Goyfs of his deck round 2 I drop Leyline of lifeforce and combo out
It didn't hekp that he had some bad opening draws.

3-1

Round 5 FoolofaTook playing UG Counter Goyf Game 1 and 2 went back and forth. Game 3 I combo'd out turn 4 for 20

Great event by DHG! Kudos Feinstein!

As far as breaking even they were not near it unless you call a loss of at least 150 even and if so send them a check.

If you know a legacy player that is in the tri-state that didn't go you should let them know that if DHG stops doing these great big cash events its their fault.

If you know of a TO that put up an event after this one you should tell them shame on them as TOs should not need to compete in the area.

Hope to see you all at The GRID today for their first event.

Remember its important to be good at the game and be good to the game.

The store owners in a given geographical area should band together to set up their own little tour. Coordinate events so they happen every three or four weeks and never conflict. Establish a double-tiered prize system with 75% of the prizes immediately and 25% going into a pool to the top points finishers at the end of the tour. Stagger the payouts in both cases so that at least top 8 share in the overall prize structure and then let the local Legacy meta get it on and start sorting.

The tour organizers could share entry fees among themselves so that nobody got slammed by a particularly low turnout at a given event and nobody reaped the benefits of the random huge tourney. You'd need to stagger the sharing also though so that a topnotch event holder, like Hadley, didn't suffer too much as it was helping build up the other spots on the tour.

Figure that the northeast would have a range of venues that were bounded by the Carousel Mall in Syracuse, Off The Wall games in Hadley, DHG in Pawtucket and the Gaming Etc Superstore in Bridgeport. Add in two more venues, maybe in Albany and north central Connecticut, and you have a six stop tour location.

The benefits for the storeowners would be a much larger turnout for the tourneys that were held, kind of guaranteeing profitability for each venue and under some kind of sharing system for the tour as a whole. The initial disadvantages probably would only hit the two main tourney organizers in Hadley and Syracuse, since they would have fewer events. The long-term goal would be to build up a regional pro tour for Legacy that would see many more players entering the competitive arena, drawing from the Extended and Standard populations as the format got more exposure.

I wake up on each tourney morning and it's a coinflip whether I go or not, depending on the weather, how much I drank last night, whether the Jets and Pats are playing that afternoon, etc. If I was in a competitive tour I'd be going to all of these without thinking about it too hard.

Anyways, Survival would have cleaned up as always. Big Game Hunters would have been flying left and right in that top 8.

And how the fuck does Aggro Loam without black beat Belcher? Maindeck Chalice? The Belcher player thought he was on a clock and tried for Empty the Warrens, only to have it Devastating Dreamed away?

If you know a legacy player that is in the tri-state that didn't go you should let them know that if DHG stops doing these great big cash events its their fault. Because, as you know, every Legacy player is available every single day, has money to for the entry fee and gas, and has a way to get there with 100% consistency. Decks are always assembled and ready to go.

There were several Survival decks there that scrubbed out early. There were wastelands, counterspells, stifle/trickbind and deed floating around all over the place and those are the things that Survival really hates to see. It was just a very bad meta for them.

I played against a very good survival deck in round two and got lucky in that he had a game loss recorded due to a deck registration error. I won game two with the cards listed above as he never got his game plan going in the face of all the disruption. He did have recurring StP that kept him in it for awhile because I let him have his witnesses, given the stuff in his graveyard, so I could stifle and counter the important things.

In my (professional) experience of playing Survival, I have enjoyed nothing more than playing against blue based control. Have fun dealing with reccuring Tarmogoyfs, Threshold and Landstill.

Deeds are kinda bad for Survival, but you can say that for any aggro-control deck.

24 people. They also did a side tourney for 2 goyfs.

Do you have the Top 8 lists?

A deck with Pernicious Deed in it can't always be classified as blue-based control, even if blue is there in enough numbers for Force of Will. Even though it creates a permission context it lives off of the balance between the board and the hand and forcing the opponent to parcel out his resources or face the consequences. Throw Tarmogoyf and Phyrexian Dreadnought into the mix and you create a really tough dilemma for a deck like Survival: either commit to the board and get swept or allow your guys to duke it out with superior (or equal) forces.

I lost two rounds yesterday, one to Roodmistah which I kind of expected given that he was playing Dreadstill and on the play game 1, and one to insertnamehere's Elves who got an excellent draw game three on the play. There was just no time to get deed down and activate it by turn 4 when he pulled the tokens off of Garruk and had five 4/4 or better tramplers attacking.

The Dreadstill matchup was bad because he was playing blue-based control, unlike me, and basically had me out-countered after he dropped turn 1 SDT and turn 2 Counterbalance in game 1. My counters totalled four Force of Will and 4 Stifle and an early CBTop on the draw was going to wreck me, which it did. Game two I actually had him with 2 Goyfs on the board on turn 5 or so and then he triggered Counterbalance blind (no SDT because I'd boarded in CBTop and dropped an SDT turn 1 which caused him to drop Pithing Needle naming SDT) and found Echoing Truth on top as I was casting my third Goyf. That was game over.

I was just saying that Deeds are really good against almost every deck in the meta right now, so pointing out that they're good against Survival is a bit of a moot point.

What were you playing, by the way?

What were you playing, by the way?

4x Tarmogoyf
3x Nimble Mongoose
2x Eternal Witness
2x Phyrexian Dreadnought
4x Mishra's Factory
3x Wasteland
1x Volrath's Stronghold
1x Miren, The Moaning Well
1x Life From the Loam
2x Standstill
4x Force of Will
4x Stifle
4x Brainstorm
3x Ponder
3x Pernicious Deed
2x Engineered Explosives
4x Polluted Delta
2x Flooded Strand
3x Underground Sea
3x Tropical Island
1x Bayou
2x Island
1x Forest
1x Swamp

SB

4x Leyline of The Void
4x Counterbalance
3x Sensei's Divining Top
4x Thoughtseize

I'm going to pull the Nimble Mongooses for sure and the Ponders I think. They were both okay cards yesterday but I kept tuning the Nimble Mongooses out, even against the Elves, and the Ponders really aren't needed to fix mana problems given there are 26 land in the deck and 17 colored mana.

Short report

round one vs. Dave's friend with pox

I looses the die roll and he starts off: swamp>ritual>ritual>entomb

...
I look at the card again just to make sure I am not being a jerk then call for the judge. He rules the card banned and we move on to game 2.

I mull and keep a hand with two careful studies and an imp. I think "what the hell Im on the draw i will see a dreadger eventually, right?"

" no says the man behind the curtain who's name is luck"

g3: land>lion's eye> breakthrough> win

(1;0;0 2;1;0)

round 2 vs. Dave (Dxfiler) with thrash

I mull and keep at 6 and decided to go ddd (draw, discard, dredge). everything was going to plan until i decided on the third turn that I would rather risk playing a putrid imp into a daze than win the game. (don't ask me why I don't think i was thinking clearly, it was probably Dave's voodoo black magic)

g2: I go land>careful study>draw into Pithing Needle>discard irrelevance I cant play the needle because i am taped out so I pass the turn.

He goes: waste my land>tormods

I decided that i would wait until i got a second land to play my needle but it never came because he had another waste. I did not play this match well at all :(

(1;1;0 2;2;0)

Round 3 vs local player with boros sleigh

g1: I overrun him with zombies turn 3

g2: He gets out some guys I cant deal with swords my akroma, and removes my bridges with mogg fanatic.

g3: I side out my antihate, and proceed to win turn 2.

(2;1;0 4;3;0)

Round 4 vs. store manager guy I forget your name sorry with Death and taxes

This is probably my easiest match.

g1: don't remember much but I win with a large margin.

g2: He plays some critters I build up a large army of zombies and swing for the win.

I ask him after the game what he sided. He told me he did not have any hate in his board dedicated to ichorid.

(3;1;0 6;3;0)

Round 4 vs. belcher

we ID
(3;1;1 6;3;0)

Top 8

Round 1 vs. Bill (insertnamehere) elves

G1: I get a nuts hand and win turn two.

G2: I have not dredger but a butt load of draw spells. I must have played breakthrough for 1 three times. I had half of my library in the yard without any dreadgers. he drops a Garruk and I scoop.

G3: i draw the nuts again land>lion's eye> breakthrough>win

(4;1;1 8;4;0)

Top 4

one of us decides to play it out, so we get it on.

Round 1 vs. Brian (TG5000) with GRw aggro loam.

g1: I win easily forget what the hand was but it was good.

g2: I side in my anti artifact hate and he sides in his leylines, gg.

g3: I side in my leylines and my chains. he opens with a leyline and I open with two. we go back and forth for a while and he finally gets down a crusher. I never find my chain> and he dreams killing both my land putting me out of the game.

(4;2;1 9;6;0)

I split the winnings of 3/4 with Rodney for $64.50

Phew that took longer than I thought it would

Props:
The judge who I forget his name for mentioning the kelpie
Me for getting 3/4
Good matchups
Team Hammafist for inducting a new member
Captain

Slops:
Me for playing poorly all day
Ripta bus system for having too many obnoxious people
Ripta bus system for not knowing where the stops on their website are and dropping me off five miles away
Coke

Because he cant cast empty ever and I got lucky when he hit me for only 12 with charlbelcher (I then got priority to grip it away). Also I beat him in the swiss even after he made 2 game losing play mistakes that I let him take back cause Im such a awesome person.

Anyways, thanks to everyone for the early cash birthday present.
