My favorite comment on the feed:

"3:19viking12345: is this the connect 4 championship?"

(It was from some down-time, but I love at least two things about the comment:

1. There is a Connect 4 Championship.
2. Such a thing may be streamed for the world to see.
3. Someone is trying to find it.

Wait, I probably shouldn't be judging.

Nice work to cdr, Bryant, etc. for the streaming video. Very cool. :)

I went 3-0 into 1-3 to take 20th with 2.5 Color Dreadstill (cutting an island for an underground simply to EE at 3). Thoughts from the event:

1. Dreadstill just isn't that good. Too many times I got caught playing catchup with my best reset button being Mage -> Explosives. That deck just straight up needs better ways to even the game.
2. Dreadstill's combo matchup is overrated. The deck doesn't run enough counterbalances to draw/resolve one reliably in the early game, and the high colorless count of the manabase means that you can't mull into it like some other decks can. Stifle is ten kinds of overrated as well, usually the best thing it does is pitch to Force. I played Tendrils twice, and went 2-3 in games. 2 games were due to drawing Balance and not seeing the second blue source.
3. Whoever was saying Canadian Thresh has been obsoleted... uh, yeah...
4. 77 People. That rules.
5. The sideboard for Dreadstill really pulls its own weight and is probably the only upside to the deck. I boarded everything in once except the one of Relic.
6. Elf Survival just rules.
7. I'm an idiot for not playing Canadian Thresh.
8. Ad Nauseum is really, really, really good. Like, that deck will just ignore you and kill you sometimes. I played the kid who t8ed with the more FT esque list and he won through my hand of "Daze, Stifle, Force, REB, REB, Land, Land."
9. All in all, a great event and I can't wait for the next one.

I do. And I was considering FS, but it tested just so poorly against dreadstill that I was uncomfortable running it. Should I reconsider?

My experience is that FS is fine in the match-up. If you resolve a spell turn 1, you pretty much negate their Standstills, and Chalice is a beating. Also, at least I MD 3 Sowers, which makes an all-in Dreadnought a very risky play. Since they pack little removal, every creature making it through their counters is a beating. Also, their Stifles and Counterbalance mostly both suck in the match-up.

It's too bad that Caplan had to cheat in round 7 to even get into the top 8 he had no business in. I should've stopped the game while everyone was watching but chose to instead keep my mouth shut. He completely misrepresented the phase and pushed his slightly more inexperienced opponent around bullylike. Having stated effects before damage and then moved directly to damage resolve while his opponent clearly wanted to crypt his board to remove threshold from the blocking mongooses. It's for this reason that I for the rest of the tournament hated on the canadians for not only being from a weak country, but also being cheaters. I will be watching these two even more in the future and advise others to do the same. After he fandangled his way into top 8 he boasted that he had top 8'd with the same deck 9 times in a row. Seem suspect to anyone? For those of you that believe these guys are good, both in moral standing and in magical prowess, I'd love to hear your comments.

First of all, if you really see someone cheating, it is actually your "duty" to call a judge and tell him for that he then intervenes and sanctions someone if it's really the case.

Second, the state you described is not clear. No boardpositions, nothing.
We actually can't say anything.

And third and last, I really despise this line in your post:

It's for this reason that I for the rest of the tournament hated on the canadians for not only being from a weak country, but also being cheaters.

Having not done the right thing yourself and then judging others is just wrong. Additionally, your generalization "David Caplan -> Canada" gives it a xenophobic touch. I mean, Canada and being a weak country? Where is the MtG-related context? You're sounding ridiculous.

And there is nothing wrng abut Top8in with a deck 9 times. I also have several Top8s with various Threshold builds. Does that make me a cheater? I mean, I am simply familiar with the deck's concept and thus I am well prepaired for each tourney.
The same is true for David since he was the first one to play UGr canadian Thresh. He invented it, thus he knows it inside-out.

Maybe David will give a personal statement himself.

TeenieBopper
01-05-2009, 07:13 PM
Basically, what it boils down to, is an experienced player taking advantage of a newer, less experienced tournament player. Technically, it wasn't cheating. However, it definitely was a scumbag thing to do. Way to douchebag your way into top 8.

Dude, not cool. "Weak Country?" What the hell does this little observation of yours have to do with magic? Oh, and way to call out his previous T8's on the basis of this.

I didn't see the match or hear anything about it, so I can't pass judgement, but I must say that after reading your post, I'm inclined to not believe you.

Michael Keller

Hey, those guys were playing for some serious cash-in-card value. If the guy didn't know how to approach his phases appropriately, he could have simply called a judge to stop Dave from harassing him into making decisions in such short order. Sometimes you need to get a little aggressive in the middle of a tight, important match in order to establish your presence at the table.

In this case, the inexperienced player could not handle the pressure of tackling a seasoned veteran without knowing how to handle his own business.

And considering it was "Round VII", by then, he (the inexperienced fellow) should have taken the initiative to tell Dave to stop coaxing him into making wrong decisions and forcing him through sleight-of-speech into getting him to move on without taking proper priority when it was his action to do so.

Some people have a way with words. But if the other player had no clue what was going on, perhaps he should have asked questions or understood the rules a little clearer to begin with.

Ok, it was game two. Bert, affinity player, played precombat a tormod's crypt with the full intention of using to remove his opponents yard and reduce 2 mongoose's p & t. He has an ornithopter and an ethersworn canonist with an arcbound worker token making it a 3/3. He also has a cranial plating attached to the canonist. He correctly attacks with both creatures. Dave makes a mongoose block the canonist. Then states " effects before damage?". Bert says, attach plating to ornithopter, which dave responds with a lightning bolt for the thopter. Bert says"ok" and then immediately, and I do mean immediately, says "resolve damage?". Bert being the inexperienced player is stunned by his opponents comment and blurps out "uh yeah...." Dave proceeds to pick up his opponents canonist and throw it into the yard. Bert looks stunned as how he's not completely sure what he was supposed to do but Dave misrepresented the forward progress of phases and deliberately took advantage of this player. Colin Chilbert nearly convinces me to say something as I am appauled and have to leave the gaming area. I thought to myself, that dems the ropes and that even as an inexperienced player you need to know the rules and it's your responsibility to do so. But as I played it over and over in my mind I realized this was actually cheating. It was clearly intentional to move through the phases so quickly as dave had no chance of dealing with a 3/3 with a cranial plating with just his 1/1's. I mean no real sincerity in my hate for canada, clearly it's a rivalry where I'm just stoking the fire. But come on, anyone else feel like these guys shouldn't show their faces in Syracuse again?

This does not improve my opinion of Carl Dillahay any.

"Bullying" may not be sporting, but it's not cheating and is a part of competitive magic whether you like it or not.

Even if it did cross the line into misrepresenting the game state (and it's not clear that it did based on what Carl posted), Carl saying nothing at the time and then whining about it in this way afterwards is scummy and as bad or worse than anything the person he's maligning did.

Well, not all of us can be perfect and in the future I will be more of an advocate for speaking up when I notice something wrong. I've played magic for a long time and never remember anyone speaking up on my behalf when I didn't notice my opponent cheating for the win. Also if no one ever mentioned anything here then you wouldn't be aware of such things. I'm doing you a favor!

Is he drunk, or is he high? Whatever it is, must be some good stuff.

Whoa.... I don't understand where this hate is coming from. I will preface this by saying that this was game 2, which I did not win, and didn't give me the top 8 spot.

I was by no means cheating, and you are really using this situation to make me look bad, which is unfortunate because you are defacing my reputation based on information that is not accurate and unfair accusations.

I was in no way bullying him, that was the only situation in which I asked about phases in order to gain an advantage. Why shouldn't knowing the rules lead to an advantage? Anyways, to my recollection, I blocked with the Mongoose with his crypt on the table, with him having a cranial playing on and an ornithopter attacking. I asked if he had effects before damage, he stated that he would move the plating, then I bolt his ornithopter, i said, so damage stacks? He responded with yes. I tell him his Cannonist dies, then he crypts me. (I do NOT remember lifting his Cannonist to his yard, and I do not think I did that, I might have, I was pretty upset about the swing of the game). Lam says that I actually ASKED if he had effects before damage, which i do not recall, but if I did, I helped him, and gave him the opportunity to crypt. My opponent didn't even tell me that he wanted to crypt before damage. He might of not even known he could, he crypted me in response to my attack step game 3. Should I assume the optimal play from my opponents? How do I know what he had in hand, or if he feared stifle or saving the crypt for the goyf I had in play? If you really felt that I was bullying him or cheating you should have talked to a judge or talked to me about it before defaming me in public when it is unfounded.

It is very unfortunate that you found it necessary to tarnish my reputation by posting this, as it was not cheating or unsportsmanlike. It was perfectly legal, and I gained an advantage from my knowledge of the rules, I will not help him to beat me.

Basically, what it boils down to, is an experienced player taking advantage of a newer, less experienced tournament player. Technically, it wasn't cheating. However, it definitely was a scumbag thing to do. Way to douchebag your way into top 8.

I would appreciate it if you did not call me a scumbag and a douchebag before you have all the information. This did not get me into the top 8, first of all, second of all using my knowledge of the rules to gain an advantage is quite fair, and experienced players do it all the time, even against me when I am unclear on a ruling especially in limited.

If there is a real problem with this situation or people feel that what I did was unfair, please let me know, but to my knowledge what I did was legal and fair. Am I not allowed to declare phases? This is not a countertop game of magic, it was a big tournament with a big prize, you are expected to have some knowledge of the rules.

Now with the situation described from both angles (and those descriptions look equivalent) I honestly can't see how this is even close to "cheating". Asking whether to stack damage or not is a totally common question during combat, and if the opponent doesn't know the rules, that's his problem.
If you call a judge in such a situation and the game state is reported to him correctly (that the question 'stack damage?' was answered 'yes') - what do you expect him to do?

I also second the critique for the Canada comments.

I didn't see what exactly happened, as I did not witness the game at all, just heard about it from Carl. If I did see what Carl described, I probably would of called the judge, if I felt the game state was misrepresented to gain an unfair advantage. I believe Carl will do the same next time.

Yeah, the other guy could've (should've) just responsed to "damage stacks?" with "not yet". I don't think there's anything wrong with this example. If someone does this in a game for fun, they are a douchebag, but if both players are playing for prize, they can reasonably be expected to take every advantage available to them under the rules.

And while cheating is reprehensible, I really hate it when someone accuses someone else of cheating without basis or sufficient evidence (and I suppose because this case ended up being one where there was sufficient evidence given and it turned out to be exculpatory, I'm going off on something of a tangent here). Because of the very fact of how reprehensible cheating is, the Magic community sometimes has this sort of blood-in-the-water pack mentality where if ever someone gets accused of cheating, the others jump to pile on, flaming this guy (the accused) to oblivion, and amplifying the charge greatly, and it can end up with the guy having a cloud over his head for the rest of his Magic-playing days for no good reason at all. There often isn't any presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Thankfully, this community seems to be somewhat different, and this was one of the rare cases where there wasn't a basis but there was plenty of evidence (so props, I suppose, for at least following up the original post with more details, rather than just leaving it at that), based on which the lack of basis could be decided by those reading.

Resolve what damage? Lightning Bolt damage or Combat damage? According to carlitobunz's recollection of the events, Combat damage wasn't even on the stack yet. So allowing the Lightning Bolt to resolve doesn't mean it's time for combat damage yet. This is all very confusing, can we lock this before it gets ugly?

Hi all, just wanted to say I enjoyed the tournament immensely and I congratulate Dave on out playing me in round seven. I hold no ill-will, as Dave said, he had better understanding of the rules than I and that is the end of it. It basically came down to a miscalculation on my behalf on the final play. I was nervous, first big tournament in 10 years, and made a poor decision. I am just glad that I was in at least a position to play in the match.

I look forward to playing Dave again some day.

The tournament is done, as is this thread.
