View Full Version : [Extended Deck] The Ring of Fire

So, I've decided I wanted to get the perfect attendance record for Pro Tours Honolulu, which, in the event that I don't win GP Chicago, means Extended PTQs.
In anticipation of this, I've spent a fair amount of time recently testing lists, and after some fine-tuning, the best deck I've found so far ended up being this 67$, monored monstrosity.
I'm posting this because I mentioned the deck in passing on the Beating-Your-Head-Against-A-Wall-On-MWS thread, and a bunch of people were asking me about the decklist.
I should probably keep it secret tech or something, but I have a huge ego and the deck's ridiculously good.
Manabase:
20x Snow-Covered Mountain
4x Scrying Sheets
24 land, pretty staple. You don't want to miss a lot of land drops. Sheets, sometimes in conjunction with Magma Jet, helps you keep hitting land drops later on while not actually drawing them. You don't have Top so the CA isn't as ridiculous; Sheets here mainly makes sure that you keep drawing gas and not lands.
Creature Removal (a lot of this):
4x Magma Jet
4x Incinerate
Efficient, instant speed, versatile. But red still has the problem dealing with large creatures. Enter;
4x Skred
4x Spitebellows
Your best answers to big fat creatures. Skred in particular is just insanely efficient, very close to being a red StP: Spitebellows also offers an alternative win condition. The sweepers;
4x Starstorm
3x Slice and Dice
Instant speed damage across the board. Damn you to to Elves and Goblins and Faeries. And the removal/main kill condition;
3x Hammer of Bogardan. When nothing else will do, you need a recurring Volcanic Hammer. Recurring creature removal + kill condition.
Kill Conditions/Other Stuff
2x Chandra Nalaar
Best Tim ever printed.
2x Stuffy Doll
Well, also a very good Tim effect. Also blocks Silver Knights and turns Skred, Spitebellows and the sweepers into direct damage effects. Double Skred, sixteen to the head is usually GG.
4x Blood Moon
One of the main reasons to play the deck. Shuts down Tron, Manlands, and, y'know, all those three-four color decks.
2x Word of Seizing
In there for all the random situations, from Crypt to Story Circle to whatever. Shines best against Umezawa's Jitte with counters active or any Planeswalker; let them get to the big effect loyalty rating. I don't think I've ever lost when someone played a Planeswalker across from me and I had drawn Word of Seizing.
Also your only maindeck hope against the Swan combo; gain control of the Swan in response to Chains. They'll draw the first three, but then you get control of the chain of Chains of Plasma.
SB:
Up for debate. Definitely including 4x Crypt and 4x Shattering Spree. I like 4x Sun Droplet against White Weenie and Burn, which are difficult matchups, and something else against either Tron or Swan, preferably both; Shunt or Reiterate are options here. Obliterate is another option; conveniently, it doesn't Chandra, Blood Moon or Stuffy Doll, and it can hose Tron. Not very good against Swans though. Maybe 1x Word of Seizing, 2x Obliterate in this slot?

You know what comboes really well with Scrying Sheets? Sensei's Divining To... oh, nevermind.
Jokes aside, IMHO the deck really needs some better win-conditions. Aside from the Chandra/Doll combo the deck looks painfully sloooow at winning the game. And your card advantage engine does not look that good. Do you usually end up out of gas?
Edit: Skred on Doll, got it.

You know, I was going to whine about you posting an Extended deck in a Legacy forum, but this actually looks pretty interesting. It seems you've managed to jump your love of Scrying Sheets into another format. Good show.
Also, <3 Skred.

Kuroda-style Red (or Flores Red, depending on whom you ask) was one of the coolest Magic decks I ever played. Props for the good port.

This is fine. Still, the board remains Legacy-only. Actual development of this deck will need to continue somewhere else.

Looks even closer to Bill Stark's T2 Snow Red deck than to Kuroda's.
Speaking of which. Any reason not to play Mouths?
TheInfamousBearAssassin
01-11-2009, 04:03 PM
I never found myself using Mouth when I ran it, and it only served to increase the chances that I'd be screwed on turn 3 double-red for Spitebellows.
Hmm... Martyr of Ashes, eh...

Speaking of which. Any reason not to play Mouths?
Because Mouths are ridiculously mana-intensive and only deal 4 damage? He has better options available to him (Skred, etc.), I think.
Also, if your plan is to use Sheets to get a bunch of lands to fuel Skred anyway, you might take a look at Molten Disaster as a finisher. It has Split Second when kickered to deal with all those pesky Counterspells, and although it doesn't hit fliers, it has the nice bonus of dealing double damage to your opponent if you have a Doll (or two!) on the table.
edit - Although, if you're looking for a straight fireball effect, Banefire (the new one from Conflux) or Demonfire might be better because it doesn't hit you, too.
edit 2 - And as a compromise, maybe move this into the Casual/Budget forum?

On a crazy note, I'm thinking about Pyrite Spellbomb in place of Incinerate. It does one less, but cycles and kills Silver Knight/Soltari Priest. Thoughts? Or is White Weenie just not actually played?
It would also suck a lot more if I played Martyr, which I'm thinking about doing. It's probably one or the other there.
I randomly watched a Standard game this past summer that ran a similar list to yours but it included blue for: Swans. Hitting it with Skred looked amazing. I'm not sure if you'd want to switch things up for it, but it might be worth testing.

Sure. But Mouth of Ronom is a land. It makes mana. And as the deck doesn't need more than :r::r: for anything, chances are it can live with fewer than 20 Mountains. There's no other real downside given that the only nonbasic hate people play (that I know of) is Blood Moon, which turns the Mouth you cut a Mountain for into a... Mountain. And you get to turn a land into a Lightning Blast in the late game, if you need to.
It's possible that the marginal benefit you get from being able to do this is even less than the marginal drawback of having less :r:. This seems unlikely to me, but I'm going to defer to the person who has actually played the deck.
And speaking of lots of :r:. Shard Phoenix? Sounds like an utter beating against all the tribal decks besides Faeries.
Unrelatedly, I don't see any harm in turning the Casual forum into an everything-besides-competitive-Legacy forum.

Good point. But you'd need 4 out of 8 of your drawn lands to be colorless for it to interfere with Hammer recursion.
I'm not saying add 4 Mouths. But at the same time it seems to me like the optimal number would be greater than 0.

I remember, when I was playing more or less the same deck in Standard, I was running Desert in the md to control small pesky creatures, say, Faeries. But with the inclusion of Blood Moon it'd be awful, yeah I got it...
I dare say this needs more Chandra Nalaar and more Doll. The 2 random Word seems janky to me and tbh I'd pretty much have a third copy of my wincons, in case you juste have to actually, you know, win the game.
But the deck looks like awesome, man. Good Game IBA. =)

I really think the Swans issue has to be addressed further. Every time i tested against it, I got crushed. Even when I boarded to 4 Words, three Grab the Reins, and 4 Shunt, I got owned. It just seems like that's a big deck to be scooping to.

Kind of wondering why this deck doesn't also play Magus of the Moon, since it rocks with your deck and you can hold back an extra turn until they find a way to deal with it, then drop your slice/starstorm to crash the board.
Also, I agree with the word of seizing because there are very few planeswalkers in extended. The only real one that gets played is Tezzeret but you can't do anything with him. You will end up taking Jittes from Zoo (good) Cranial Plating guys from Affinity (Good, but only as long as they didn't kill u last turn with it) and some Wizards (mediocre, unless... I don't know if you get the effect it you take a guy with a CiP effect as it enters play, then it wouldnt be so bad)
here's an idea of the decks you see in extended
Blue / UW Control
Tezzeret
Faeries/Wizards
Zoo
Burn Red
All In Red (Turn 1 Demigod/Deus)
I do like Spitebellows as both a win condition and a kill spell. I've been using Spitebellows as a kill spell with my Cream of the Crop deck since Shadowmoor came out

Roman Candle

Swinging at me with Swans, mostly. Other than Grab the Reins, there's no way for us to get rid of Swans, and you have to keep four or five mana untapped at all times. Swans hit me low enough that I had to tap out on my main phase, and then they combo'ed out.
Maybe I'm playing it wrong, but it seems like even without Chain of Plasma, you scoop to a Swans. Unless there's some obvious out that I'm not catching... these past few months have been exhausting, so I'm not playing my best Magic.
Nihil Credo
01-11-2009, 10:41 PM
Conflux provides Banefire, which takes care of Swans nicely and with a "can't be prevented" condition that is much easier to fulfil than Demonfire (in this deck).

I don't play Extended so I have no idea how the matchup plays out. But their Swans turns your deck into a ridiculous card drawing machine. Skred becomes God's own Ancestral Recall. Surely there is some way to turn this against them? Couldn't you even board your own Chains of Plasma and then combo off in response to them at instant speed? Lightning Storm is an instant. Of course, they have some limited countermagic while you have none, so I guess that's a problem. Stupid Red Blasts not being legal.
EDIT -- ...and I suppose it's much simpler to just use Word of Seizing. But in that case I come back to the assertion that there has to be an easy way to not lose to Swans beatdown when it lets you draw something like half your deck.

It does, but then there's not a whole lot you can do with the cards. You can tap out for Stuffy Doll and kill them the next turn, but tapping out will let them combo out.

There's Guttural Response.
But Swan-beatdown seems slow enough that you should be able to kill them with burn drawn off of Skred/Bellows. They can only kill you at sorcery speed anyway. The Worlds 6-0 list was only 4 Spell Snare, 2 Mana Leak, 2 Condescend for counters, so see what that's worth.
Illissius
01-11-2009, 11:10 PM
So, options I can find which keep Swans at bay without killing them:
Trip Noose
Icy Manipulator
Staff of Domination
Dancing Scimitar

01-11-2009, 11:14 PM
Would it be silly to try and run Sudden Impact in that matchup?

01-11-2009, 11:46 PM

Oblivion Stone looks promising

How so? By my math, Swans beats for four, and you're gaining a max of 2 life for every one of their turns.
Are we talking about some kind of smaller, less burly swans?
TheInfamousBearAssassin
01-12-2009, 12:55 AM
When Skred is Ancestral Recall on crack, I'm less worried about Grizzly Bear beats. Plus, makes it easy to draw 2x Sun Droplet.
Really, you almost want your opponent to play Swans against you, because, seriously? Card draw?

So should you run 4 droplets in the board?
It seems like a pretty good card against anything running a man plan and makes it hard for burn to just burn you out before you get the mana to kill them. Speaking of which how would this deck beat mono-red burn/sligh? It runs enough burn spells to just dome you and its creatures are hasty or don't stick around more than a turn anyways.
Artowis
01-12-2009, 05:48 AM
Swans really isn't a big deal. It's probably like the 7th deck in terms of popularity / what I'd actually be worried about when building a deck. In terms of popularity at most PTQ's and such, you get a breakdown like this:
Top 3 - Zoo, MUC (Faeries/Wizards/Whatever), Burn
Next three are usually either GB Loam Cloud, Elves and Affinity; but I can imagine in certain meta's there being a small Swans contingent.
And honestly if you cared about Swans a lot, you'd just run Everlasting Torment in the board, which also neatly deals with COP: Red, the occassional Martyr - Proc deck and other annoyances along those lines.
Sun Droplet is probably worth it anyway just to have some outside shot at beating normal burn, of which you sadly don't have much of a game-plan against due to the sheer amount of not-creatures they run.
TheInfamousBearAssassin
01-12-2009, 02:15 PM
Yeah. Burn makes me want to run 3x Shunt in that sb slot. Bring in that and Sun Droplet and you have some chance of beating burn, which is definitely your worst matchup of the three you name. And it's decent against Swans and sometimes Tron, depending on their list.
Everlasting Torment could go in the Crypt slot. Graveyard based decks seem to be less prevalent than I had expected.
A black splash could solve the Swans problem and come in handy against Tron and Deathcloud. I think Deathcloud has not been mentioned yet as a bad matchup but with their Loam/Raven's Crime engine followed by a cloud they have a good matchup against this so any help from the SB would be useful.
Black would give you different removal that can target Swans (maybe Slaughter Pact which is really good against Swans Remand, Condescend and Mana Leak, but also against the big creatures int the format).
You would also get Thoughtzseize and Cranial Extraction (or Extirpate) in the SB for the matchup against Combo, Cloud and Tron.

Seems like it makes Blood Moon a lot worse.
Besides, I kind of like the idea of stopping the combo by drawing a million cards and doing 3 damage for five mana. Or possibly Shunting a Conflagrate.

The probability that the second card is a land, given that the first card is a land, is almost identical to the probability that the first card is a land.
Say there are 15 snow-covered land left in the deck. If you scrying sheets, there's still 14 left in the deck and no guarantee that the top card is now non-land. It's the same as using a fetchland, only it's not even guaranteed to remove the land density because you could reveal a threat and not a land.
I guess it's something to do with extra mana, but activating it starting in the midgame won't noticeably give you more threats.
Willoe
01-13-2009, 02:23 PM
Thinning out the deck just increases the probability of drawing nonland cards. A great quality most decks when they've reached their necessary land amount. Scrying Sheets increases the probability - not ensuring - that you don't draw lands. The "makes sure" phrase that IBA uses is simply a little exaggeration. I understand it as "increasing the probability", which is also true.
Btw, deckthinning is a powerful strategy in this deck. I definetely think this deck is good, but I don't know if it has potential though. It should maybe be made a little faster with mana acceleration, and perhaps Chalice and/or Trinisphere?

You're missing a critical difference between fetches and Sheets. They operate in the same way if the top card is a land, but if it's a spell, fetchlands shuffle it away while Sheets leave it on top.
Let's say you have 15 lands in your library of 35 cards.
Your chance of drawing a spell is 20/35, about 0.571.
If you fetch before drawing, it becomes 20/34, about 0.588.
If you Scrying Sheets before drawing, it becomes 20/35 + (15/35 * 20/34), about 0.823.

I look forward to testing this. It looks awesome. Initial thoughts.
Seems like Relic trumps crypt here, especially because the rock is the main matchup where you are bringing in the crypt. Sure, it might hit a Hammer every now and again, but most of the time, it's going to shrink potential tarmogoyfs, cantrip, and blunt life from the loam way more effectively. It's also much better against the Martyr/Proc decks because they put so few cards into the yard.
Splash damage- Decks are already bringing in CoP and Forgetender's in against everything from burn to swans. CoP's aren't that bad with your stuffy doll, but forgetender's seem scary out of zoo. I don't really have an answer for them blanking your wraths except maybe to play more wraths.
Burn's sulfuric vortex plan is going to trump your sun droplets. Shunt's sweet, but I worry it's not enough.
Swans just seems terrible if they know what you're doing. They've got gigadrowse and you don't really have a clock. They aren't going to drop a swans against a deck with skred until you're tapped out. But meta's will differ, maybe you just don't hit it. Do you really bring in Droplets here?
Blood moon is great, but I've definitely read that decks are adapting to it. Like Artowis, I'm not sure that Tron falls in the top 6-7 decks. Maybe you just want molten rain?

Nihil mostly covered this, but put simply;
If the top two cards are land, and you Sheet, that's still only one turn you're drawing land versus two.
If one of the top two cards of your library is land, you have a 50% chance of drawing it without Sheets and a 0% chance with Sheets.
If they're both business, you're good anyway.
How bad would Browbeat be here? Is it really a bad card all around?
TheInfamousBearAssassin
01-14-2009, 12:31 AM
The deck doesn't go for the throat, so there's just no pressure early on to make Browbeat playable. If I were to run card draw, I'd think about something like Illuminated Folio, or possibly Bottled Cloister + Ensnaring Bridge.

Ughhhh... I like this deck, but it seems like the burn matchup is unwinnable. Any suggestions? I don't think 4 droplets is gonna cut it, especially since every burn deck in the universe plays 4 maindeck vortexes. I guess the solution is: don't play against burn.
Have you considered greater gargadon or the suspend card that is like wheel of fortune?

This is the list I'm going to play at Grand Prix Hannover:
// Lands
20 Snow-Covered Mountain
4 Scrying Sheet
// Creatures
4 Spitebellows
2 Chandra Nalaar
2 Stuffy Doll
// Spells
4 Skred
4 Incinerate
4 Magma Jet
4 Starstorm
4 Blood Moon
3 Hammer of Bogardan
3 Slice and Dice
2 Word of Seizing
// Sideboard
4 Relic of Progenitus
4 Shattering Spree
4 Sun Dropplet
2 Word of Seizing
1 Shatterstorm
I'm expecting a lot of Affinity, Austrian Faeries, Elves! and some NLU, Storm and Zoo. This deck cannot beat Storm, but's pretty amazing against the rest of the field.
Is Blood Moon the best choice? :really:

I don't think this comment is right anymore, since every deck and their mother runs Jitte to kill Stuffy Doll, along with a set of Path to Exile, and Chandra alone isn't worth it imo. I've been changing this deck up some since I'm pretty sure the meta has completely changed since it was made.
Trying to keep this as creature controlling as possible, while beating the top decks aside from TEPS (storm combo has only 4 cards dedicated in the sideboard, so hope to god you hit one).
Here's my new list that is running very smoothly but needs 2 cards:

4 [MOR] Spitebellows
2 [PLC] Akroma, Angel of Fury
4 [SHM] Demigod of Revenge
2 [FUT] Magus of the Moon
// Spells
4 [CS] Skred
4 [FD] Magma Jet
4 [9E] Blood Moon
3 [ON] Slice and Dice
3 [OV] Incinerate
4 [7E] Pillage
// Sideboard
SB: 3 [ALA] Relic of Progenitus
SB: 4 [GP] Shattering Spree
SB: 4 [MR] Sun Droplet
SB: 4 [SC] Pyrostatic Pillar
I took out Starstorm since either A: I'm playing against a faerie deck that has way too many counterspells for it (Mana Leak or Cryptic), or B: I'm playing against something with Goyf, so wait till I have 7 lands to play it (i.e. dead) or Wild Nacatyl which I lose to by turn 5 anyway since they have multiple creatures or goyf or burn. For win conditions, I've tried to skrew over PtE and control decks, since we can mostly stall other decks out until we hit enough lands.
Pillage is necessary for Jittes, this deck just cannot win to a charged Jitte. It's also amazing synergy with Blood Moon to stop people's goyfs, or just to get a general mana screw going. It's like Vindicate since no one plays enchantments and there's hopefully enough burn for killing their creatures.
Moon effects got pumped to 6 since killing Mutavaults is amazing vs faeries, Zoo's creatures lose pumps unless they see it coming, and it's just great in general against the format.
So I need 2 slots more of cards right now, preferably creature control. I might just +1 S&D, +1 Incinerate, or another Magus. Anyone who actually plays this have any advice?
Oh, also the reason I'm playing this is that I don't have any of my Legacy cards here in HK, so I will be buying this entire deck for a PTQ in a week and a half. Thanks for any input!
I would fill it with Banefire. Awesome finisher and handles Swans or any other creature that gives trouble.

I would run 4 Slice and Dice at least if you're cutting Starstorm. Maybe Volcanic Fallout.
I think I'd also rather run Bogardan Hellkite than Akroma. Maybe that's a good choice for the open slots too.

Also I should say that I know these people will be here, with these decks (from Singapore last weekend)
+Lee, Shi_Tian [HKG] TEPS
+Li, Cheuk_Yin [HKG] Tezzerator
+Tsang,_Derek [HKG] Aggro Loam
+Wong, Chi_Keung [HKG] Bant Aggro
+Chick, Hoi_K [HKG] Astral Slide
I've heard that only about 20 people show up to PTQs here, so I can expect that for competition. Stupid varied field.
I don't know about Banefire. I'm looking for some creature control mainly... or possibly something else, but since I apply no pressure until I drop a win condition, I don't see myself winning with Banefire. And then I'm going to have to play like 6 to kill a Goyf, which doesn't help since I'm dead by then.
I haven't seen swans on MWS or heard of any around here, is that decks still popular?
Right now I've just seen burn (ouch) Faeries (above 50% but not by much), Aggro decks (depends on which, but usually over 50 pre board, less than 50 post board), and random other stuff and tezzerator (this crushes)... and one death cloud but lets never speak of that again.
EDIT: S&D is probably going to get the extra slot, but then I still have 1 open slot. Bogarden is better as a creature, but being PtE proof as well as counterproof (which is huge after waiting at least 10 turns, since they save up cryptic + mana leaks + flashfreeze or whatever its name is. Venser is a bitch though.
Volcanic Fallout is good, but doesn't do anything against zoo as they all have 3 toughness butts. As for Firespout, it doesn't hit faeries which is highly desirable for me.
EDITEDIT:
Also, Thank you IBA for making a deck that I don't need to sell my organs for.

Oops... the search filter I was using is retarded and I can't use Pillage. That now leaves 6 open slots :-/
