Could I get a PM with the Top 8 lists for the Vintage tournament as well? I didn't see anything over at TMD about it, so I don't know if it was posted anywhere.

Also, grats to you guys that placed. Breakfast looked like a great meta call, lol.

Fuck yeah Don Brass!

As a person who has waded through his own share of deck registration sheets, let me tell you - magic players have decidedly worse penmanship than any other demographic that I have encountered, without a doubt (save third graders with palsy also coming down off of a crack high).

Eh, you can see me shuffle up . Sweet.

I had a multitude problems with the tournament:

First: I hated the fact that Legacy Part was started circa finals of the Vintage part, not at the Top 8 as promised.

Second: I felt that the tournament was poorly ran. When I got there Vintage was a hour plus late, the TO was trying to change the prize support that was promised. Also, there was discussion that there should be a cut to top six, in the legacy part. I had to convinced the TO to do the top 8 as planned.

Third: All of team Info Ninja wanted to do is do some cubing before the tournament. I felt it was immature that we had to ask a bunch of people if we can have use of a table to cube. Just set out extra tables so other people outside the tournament can some magic. I do not want to ask more than one person or have to wait on an answer.

Fourth: This one, put me in the greatest ire: "The Rule"
When I was shuffling up during the first round of the tournament, the owner of the store treated us like incompatible three-year-olds who just got off the space shuttle to Mars. She proclaimed the following:

It is okay to deal card via each other.
Please respect Myself, the employees, the TO and each other.
Do not swear in the shop. First time it is a warring, then a Match Loss, then I am kicking you out. Instead you can use the word 'frick.' And I find it funny when people do use that word.

The first one I have no problem with, but I should. The second one sounded like when I was back in St. Catherine's, over eight years ago when I was eight, give your participants the benefit of the doubt on this. And finally the last one, my god, the last thing she said. I am still angry about it. I felt so enraged, by this, I wanted to do something about it. Giving a Match Loss to swearing is ridiculous. Kicking someone out because of this will make the person call their constitutional lawyer. When I was thinking about what to say on this topic, I was going to go off in a tangent and give a First Amendment lesson. But instead I am going to tell everyone at OCC the following thing: The message is the message. If you do not understand what the means. Feel free to PM me.

Fourth: This one, put me in the greatest ire: "The Rule"

Your response is patently ridiculous. Have you ever been to a tournament ever? None of what the owner asked you is the least bit unreasonable. Constitutional lawyer? How old are you?

Pinder

Yeah, Giles, I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Other tournaments we've been to have been late, and you didn't pitch a hissy fit. I will admit that waiting until the Vintage Top 4 (not until the finals) sort of sucked, because combined with the hour late start for Vintage it meant that Legacy started two hours later than expected. But the reason they did it is because there were people in the Vintage top8 who wanted to play Legacy if they didn't make it past the quarterfinals. It bolstered attendance and gave us better prizes, albeit at the price of starting a tournament late that was already going to run into the early morning anyway.

As far as Lenny (I think that was his name?) trying to change prizes, the reason he did that is because if he kept the Lotus for first, based on attendance the prizes for 2-8 would have sucked. His aim was to try and level out the prize support so it wouldn't be so lopsided. And sure, he could have just kept the Lotus for first and handed out great prizes for 2-8 anyway, but he probably wanted to break even, you know? What's more, he didn't just up and decide. He announced this to all of the players, and asked them what they wanted. The players agreed on the prize support that was handed out. I'm not really seeing where this is any of the sort of shady bullshit you're trying to make it out to be.

Re: No swearing rule, yeah, I thought it was stupid myself, but I'm sure the store owner had her own reasons for it, and there were little kids running around. Plus, not being able to swear isn't that bad, and it's certainly not the sort of horrible constitutional grievance you make it out to be. And it's not that I was really angry that I couldn't swear, it was more that I was worried I'd let something slip out of habit and accidentally get a game loss or something. Is a game loss (or DQ) for swearing pretty harsh? Well, yeah, but that's her prerogative, she doesn't answer to you.

And you're really going to bitch that we had to ask her once to see if we could use her space and table, in her store, Cube Draft with? Really?

I only had a problem with #4, just to be clear. The rest you can make an argument for; that one you cannot.

AngryTroll
02-01-2009, 01:07 AM
Chill out. Sure, it started late, but it's not like it was the end of the world. It would have been nice if it had started an hour earlier, and two hours earlier would have been even better; on the other hand, waiting for Vintage to go to Top 4 to gain a few extra players was fine.

Second, the no swearing rule was fine. As James said, I was more worried I'd let something slip and get DQed. Sure, I had to watch my tongue a little bit, but I have no problem at all if the wanted her store to be less profane.

Finally, did you see how much Battlestar stuff there was? There were Baltar Busts, models of Galactica, Vipers, and Raiders, Number Six action figures; there was just about an entire island of BSG stuff. If she wants to allow Frack, well, it was rather entertaining to hear it yelled.

Chill out. It was a great tournament, we did get to Cube, and, sure, Legacy started late, but it's not like we were really surprised at the start time. Go look at the announcement thread- I predicted an eight o'clock start time weeks before the tournament, and that is when we started.

Volt
02-01-2009, 01:54 AM
First and most importantly, it's frak, not frick or frack. Get your nerd expletives right, son.

Second... Even though I have a bad temper and swear too much, I didn't have a problem with the store rules.

Third... A Lotus was advertised as being the 1st place prize. It seems to me that they reneged. I was standing there when the TO polled the players before the 1st round on whether they wanted to stick with the Lotus or restructure the T8 prizes, and they voted to stick with the Lotus. Somehow, between then and the end of the tournament, that decision was overturned.

IceBerg

Relax guys, the entire Top 8 deiced they wanted to downgrade the Lotus to payout 5th through 8th. The prize support was still insane and everyone got a lot more than hey would have, except me. But don’t cry for me, I already have a really nice Beta Lotus. Also you have to remember that the Legacy event was a “Side Event“. It was still important but not the top priority of the day.

Also Lenny and I are trying to squeeze in a HUGE Legacy event before he gets sent to the "Sandbox". Would you guys rather play for a metric fuck ton of Dual Lands or Power?

DeathwingZERO
02-02-2009, 06:11 AM
Legacy buffs around here will ALWAYS take Duals over Power. The first is much easier to pawn off, and actually has use for us. There's about......zero Vintage tournaments in the Portland area anymore, so us down south especially wouldn't have use for them.

Thanks for the lists for the Top 8 in Vintage. I've been doing my best on keeping tabs, but it's madness for me trying to read up on forums for anything, and unlike a number of decks I know I'll see locally in Legacy, Vintage is kinda it's own thing around here, decks aren't really common knowledge. I really like the idea of getting more in tuned to the metagame.

AngryTroll
02-02-2009, 12:36 PM
Duals. Sure, you can sell Power or Duals, but we can actually use the Duals. As Ryan just said, there's no Vintage in Oregon (well, not much Legacy either, but some is a ton more than none), so Duals would be awesome.

Pinder
02-02-2009, 01:22 PM
Duals. Hands down.

What I am trying to get to is that I just want to play magic, when I go to a card shop. I want to be communicated like an adult, and want to be treated as one as well.

I have no problem of adjusting prize sussport. However, what I saw was a huge lack of communation. Same with trying and make it a Top 6 cut. No one knew about it since the TO just said it at Table number one (the one I was at) and said "It does not cut a round."

I think my tone from in my last post was harsh. However, I was very edgey at OCC the intire time due to how I was treated.

EDIT: I am going to vote for a imperial fuck ton of duels.

I have no idea whether you think that Don is actually not being funny or you're continuing the joke of putting dictionaries on the bottom of libraries, but this is hilarious.
