This was an idea that tickled me: a control deck with blue that doesn't have any (or hardly any) counters.

I am of the opinion that the two Standard environments with Ravnica are among some of the most diverse and interesting in recent history, and one of my favorite decks from that era is Solar Flare. In case you don't know or don't remember, Solar Flare was a deck in Esper colors that eschewed counters for a strong board control element backed up by fatties that were discarded to its draw spells and then reanimated, usually via Zombify. The deck used Remand and maybe a few other cards to prevent particularly devastating spells from resolving but preferred to use sweepers, pinpoint removal, and big dorks with powerful effects to sculpt a favorable game state. This was the deck that made Angel of Despair good.

In seeking to emulate this in EDH, I stumbled across the Dark Side Ertai, who not only has the same colors but also allows me to drop counters from the main entirely in favor of using my general as a proxy for the light counter suite of the old Standard builds. Here's what I've come up with so far:

General: 1 Ertai, the Corrupted

You have a small contingent of early defensive creatures, but the stars of the show are huge guys you can pitch to your draw spells and then reanimate (although you can eventually cast all of them). There are a couple token producers to help Ertai along as well.

Cards I want to fit in here, in no particular order:

Profane Command
Sharuum
Austere Command
Counterbalance (is my curve too shitty?)
Azami
Aeon Chronicler

Thoughts?

How does the deck fare 1v1 against Zur?

Dunno. There's an updated version of the deck floating around on this forum that I took apart because it was boring to play.

I suspect you need more counters to beat Zur.
