Even with the banning of Mystical Tutor I decided to play my deck, because well, it’s my deck. That and Mystical Tutor is overrated.

I’ve been receiving IMs and PMs all week asking “WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITHOUT TUTOR?!11!” My answer – not care. It’s one of my most sided out cards in the deck.

2 Shattering Spree
2 Pyroblast

Round One: Landstill

Game One: I’m playing against a guy who I know played TES but didn’t anymore. He starts shuffling and reveals a Brainstorm and a Tundra on accident. Great…islands, this is the theme of this report. I keep a hand with a couple protection spells, Mystical, and Rituals. I Duress him, he has a Force, a counterspell, and planeswalkers. I take force. He plays the factory game and attacks me down to 14. I decide it’s time to win now. I endstep Mystical for Nauseam, untap, Duress (Counterspell), Chant (Resolves), Rituals, Nauseam.

Sideboarding: -2 Mystical Tutor, +2 Pyroblast

Game Two: I keep a hand of Duress, Duress, Dark Ritual, Infernal Tutor, Rite of Flame, Lion’s eye Diamond, and Scalding Tarn. I draw a Brainstorm. I duress him turn one after he Mulligans. HE HAS NOTHING, two Jaces, two Giddeon, a land, and a Blue Elemental Blast. BEB out. He draw, goes. I draw a lotus Petal. I play Brainstorm hitting Lion’s Eye Diamond, Lotus Petal, Land. I put Rite of Flame and Lotus Petal on top. I then play Land, Dark Ritual, Duress (Still nothing), LED x2, Infernal for Ad Nauseam. Nauseam, grapeshot for a bunch.

Round Two: Landstill

Feature Match (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/7913212)

Sideboarding: -2 Mystical Tutor, +2 Pyroblast

Round Three: Team America

Game One: Dan does his thing with an early Wasteland and slows me down a bit and starts attacking. I eventually build up and start disrupting him with a few Duress. On my next turn I Brainstorm into Dark Ritual, Lion’s Eye Diamond, and Lotus Petal. I Dark Ritual, Infernal Tutor (Reveal: Lion’s Eye Diamond), Lotus Petal, Rite of Flame, Rite of Flame, Burning Wish, Ill-Gotten Gains, replay Lion’s Eye Diamond, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Infernal Tutor for Tendrils.

Sideboarding: -2 Mystical Tutor, +2 Pyroblast

Game Two: Dan does that early wasteland thing and get’s me to sit on my thumb. I’m waiting for more initial mana sources, they don’t come, I attempt to go off and Dan shows off what he’s been drawing all game.

Game Three: I had to contain myself when I opened this land…2x Land, Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual, Duress, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Infernal Tutor… Gemstone, Dark Ritual, Duress (He Reveals….Force of Will, Wasteland, Daze, Spell Pierce, Portent, 2 Fetches. I take Force) Dark Ritual, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Infernal Tutor, Ad Nauseam. I like Dan, he’s a cool guy, I didn’t grapeshot him.

Round Four: Merfolk

Game One: I keep a hand that looks like this…Duress, Rite of Flame, Rite of Flame, Scalding Tarn, Gemstone Mine, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Burning wish. I start off with a Duress he Forces. He plays Curse Catcher. I draw an Orim’s Chant, play land pass. He plays another Curse Catcher. I draw another Land. Play it. Rite of Flame, Rite of Flame, Chant, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Burning Wish for Returns. Returns floating one Red, with a land untapped. My 7 card hand is…. Rite of Flame, Dark Ritual, Lotus Petal, land, Chrome Mox, Infernal Tutor, Burning Wish. I play Rite of Flame, Chrome Mox (Imprint: Infernal), Lotus Petal, Dark Ritual, Tendrils of Agony.

Sideboarding: -2 Mystical Tutor, +2 Pyroblast

Game Two: He mulligan’s to five. I keep a pretty decent hand. I decide I’m going to go all in turn one. I Dark Ritual, he forces. Pass. He plays draw go. I draw Chant. Land, Chant, Ritual, Lotus Petal, Rite of Flame, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Infernal for Ad Nuaseam, he scoops.

Round Five: New Horizons

Game One: Tariq starts off with a few Hierarchs, which turns into a Rhox War Monk gaining an assload of life. He gets up to 30. Me? I’m at 5 with five black, three red, and 3 blue mana floating. Yes, this guy draws triple Lion’s Eye with Duress and Burning Wish. I stare at my sideboard for awhile then realize, HE’S AT THIRTY FUCKIN’ LIFE! I have to Diminishing Returns. Now let me tell you how lucky Tariq is.. the guy draws Two forces, blue cards to pitch, and Brainstorm. I draw Lotus Petal, Lotus Petal, Burning Wish, Burning Wish, Tendrils of Agony, Chrome Mox, Infernal Tutor. I play my Artifact Mana. Burning Wish (Force), Burning Wish (Force), Tendrils, He brainstorms in response, Tariq reveals a Force… Tendrils still kills him. I may be luckier.

Sideboarding: -2 Mystical Tutor, +2 Pyroblast

Game Two: Tariq does that whole Rhox War Monk and Hierarch thing again… I’m at 11, he’s at 25. I decide to go for it. I duress him Twice, play out my hand, Ad Nuaseam. I end up revealing 15 cards and go to two life with no tutors. I decide I can’t win unless I flip a cantrip. I flip Infernal.

Game Three: I start with Duress, go. He has 2x Force of Will, Daze, Spellpierce, Hierarch, Knight, land. He plays Hierach. I play Draw, go. He draws his second land, knight. Time to capitalize. I duress taking the second force leaving him with just a Daze. Lotus Petal, Dark Ritual, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Infernal Tutor. Ad Nauseam. I show boat for a very long time and Grapeshot him for some ridiculous amount.

Round Six: ?

Round Seven: Zoo

I tell Jesse I won’t dream crush him because he’s a cool guy. I should have.

Top 8: New Horizons

Game One: Tariq draws the stone cold nuts against me, I’m helpless.

Sideboarding: -2 Mystical Tutor, +2 Pyroblast

Game Two: Tariq has not tapped out since that game three in swiss. He beats me down with a Hierarch the entire game. I’m at 6. I play a ton of protection, all of which gets countered. I Burning wish, Returns floating one. Resolves. I draw Chant, Pyroblast, artifact mana, Ponder, Burning Wish. I chant him. He Negates. If I pyroblast I’m a mana short of Burning Wish -> Tendrils. I have a Ponder. I’m thinking do I take the chance and Pyro, Ponder into the mana I need? I don’t I let Negate Resolve. Wish? Resolves. Tendrils. I look at the top 3, there’s an LED, Land, and a Wish. It would’ve gotten there too.

Game Three: I keep a really solid hand of, Chant, Duress, Dark Ritual, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Ad Nauseam, and lands. He starts with Hierarch, go. I duress, Daze. I draw another Ritual. Chant, Ritual, Ritual, LED, Nauseam. I go to 2. I tell him he should scoop or I’ll make him sit through another grapeshot, he sits. I actually had to work a little bit. All of those people watching, I couldn’t break a promise. I had to Burning Wish for Ill-Gotten Gains in order to reach a Grapeshot of 22.

Top 4: Zoo

Game One: I mulligan, keep a land of Lands, Ponder, Rituals. I cantrip 4 times this game never to find a business spell. Jesse just keeps attacking me with Dorks.

Sideboarding: -3 Orim’s Chant, -1 Empty the Warrens, +1 Echoing Truth, +1 Deathmark, +1 Wipeaway, +1 Infernal Tutor

Game Two: I keep an eh… hand. Jeese keeps a hand with Gaddeck Teeg. He beats me down to 11. Plays a second Goyf and has lethal on the board. I play Rite of Flame, Dark Ritual, Lotus Petal, Burning Wish, Grapeshot, I can kill his Stepp Linx or deal damage to him. I can put him to 15, then be short one life on my Infernal for Tendrils, or kill his dudes. I kill his dudes and only have four mana and tendrils him to three. Hope to draw something, I don’t.

All in all, a good event, I ended up with a bunch of EDH foils and some cash which I blew on drinking. So much that I was too hungover to play in the GPT the next day.

Nice run bud. Glad to hear I'm not alone in thinking combo is very much still alive, you just have to not suck to play it.

Nice report, and apparently I need to do something about my TES matchup. Like playing forests.

Great Report.

I am quite new to Legacy, being a budget Vintage Player who allways loved Combo Decks.
Being in the Vintage Scene for a long time I've learned one thing: Restrictions (well in Legacy bannings) are not shutting down complete Deck-Types, such as Combo. Playing Storm means you've got to chain your way to lethal Tendrils(or whatever Card that wins). Looking at the Top Decklist I read 2(only two fucking MT's). Seriously guys... giving up 2-4 Cards of your Deck is not a thing to burst in tears for. You'll find other Cards which you might even like better. Vintage Combo has survived Brainstorm as 1off which I think was far more important than MT's Banning.
I'm not trying to compare both, but in my opinion Storm Combo is that good, because it's able to change under given circumstances as propably no other mechanic in the game can. Now is not the time to give up, but tinker, test and try some new ways.

Well I think Reanimator is capable of doing great plays because of some new creaturs with great abilities, namely Iona, Terastodon, Blazing Archon, Imperial Archangel, Sphinx and Inkwell. Actually those are good reasons to play reanimator, if you ask me. ;P

Again: Great Report! Made me want to go off Bad-Ass-Style with combo, again.
