Deck

Glittering Junk is a Gwb creature based control deck that takes advantage of early disruption provided by black, the great defensive spells offered by white and the best green and gold men in the format. It also sports a flexible wish board via Glittering Wish. The deck can also go aggro with 9 mana accelerators.

4 Glittering Wish
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Doran, the Siege Tower
2 Qasali Pridemage
3 Maelstrom Pulse
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Thoughtseize
4 Tarmogoyf
1 Garruk, Primal Hunter
3 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Shriekmaw
2 Eternal Witness
1 Temple Garden
1 Murmuring Bosk
2 Godless Shrine
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Marsh Flats
2 Forest
1 Swamp
1 Plains
1 Kitchen Finks
3 Overgrown Tomb
2 Horizon Canopy
1 Sejiri Steppe
1 Stirring Wildwood
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
SB: 1 Putrefy
SB: 1 Behemoth Sledge
SB: 1 Crime // Punishment
SB: 1 Knight of the Reliquary
SB: 4 Leyline of Sanctity
SB: 1 Gaddock Teeg
SB: 1 Mystic Enforcer
SB: 1 Maelstrom Pulse
SB: 4 Deathmark

Card Choices

The banning of GSZ has thrown the creature makeup for a loop.

Birds of Paradise: The second best mana dork in the format. Provides black and can hold a hammer. Another option would be a split 3/1 with Hierarch. Exalted can win standoffs later in the game.

Doran: The best beats to cost ratio this side of a mid game Tarmogoyf. Also dodges certain removal spells, can occasionally block stuff with fear. Also occasionally causes people to make combat errors with their own men (A dude sending a Ball Lightning at me was my all time best Doran error).

Tarmogoyf: Not many reasons not to run 4 with this deck. You have Shriekmaw, Thoughtseize, 8 fetches and Instants.

Fauna Shaman: Decent GSZ target in some cases, removes excess BOPs. Can get Shriekmaws mid game. Also typically draws removal like no other.

Knight of the Reliquary: Arguably the best creature in the format. 8 fetches should ensure he is beefy. This list doesn't play any land tricks with him (Seijiri Steppe, etc.) but that's certainly an option. Only 3 because of GSZ and you don't necessarily want 2 in your opener.

Thrun: Some decks just can't answer this dude. An opposing deck with only point removal or an opposing deck sandbagging counter magic can't deal with him.

Qasali Pridemage: Obvious cat wizard is obvious. Equipment heavy environs might merit more of these dudes. He's also accessible via wish board.

Wall of Roots: Another mana dork, that also can help you stabilize versus aggro decks (Goblin Guides, Early Tarmogoyfs). Swinging with his ass is also a benefit with a siege tower out.

Green Sun's Zenith: The engine that makes everything go. Ensures a smooth stream of men. Enables toolbox style deck building. Recycles itself.

Thoughtseize: Gives you some game on the play vs. control decks. Lets you flush out sandbagged Wrath of Gods.

Glittering Wish: Mid-game flexibility to answer tough situations. Sometimes it just gets a Knight to beat harder. Against decks packing 6-8 x Wrath grab Teeg. Need a weapon grab a Hammer. Need to nuke a weapon? Grab a cat wizard or sliver. Huge Knight getting you down, Putrefy him. O-Ring locking your man out, Mortify it.

Path / Dismember: Some split of these is the critter control package. With Shriekmaw there are a total of 8 point removal spells, plus the wish board.

Lands: 23 of em' <later>

Other Cards to Consider

Tidehollow Sculler: Nice to grab out of the board. Can help vs. combo or just peel spot removal. Is an artifact and can't be Throat-Neck-Aim'ed. Not green and can't be GSZed.

Eternal Witness: Some swear by the Witness, others think it's too slow. When it can speed bump and get back a removal spell (vs. say zoo or Jund) it can really shine. It's also fine against discard.

Grim Discovery: Works really well with Fauna Shaman, Shriekmaw and Fetches.

Weapons: With no SFM weapons are a bit dicey. You may have some games where things work out, other games may produce awkward hands.

Oblivion Ring: Super flexible removal, but a bit weak as it'll be your opponents only Pridemage target.

Other Black Removal Besides Dismember: They all have their pros and cons, the fact that the deck has Shriekmaw makes me want to play Dismember. Shriekmaw the Knights and Goyfs, Dismember Tombstalkers, Obliterators and Bobs.

Sideboard / Wishboard Choices

Gaddock Teeg: Can be snatched if Thoughtseize reveals sweepers. Shuts off your own GSZ though so use with caution.

Behemoth Sledge: Can really break a Goyf-off or a KotR stalemate. Can also get you back in the game vs. burn.

Kitchen Fink: Can help out versus burn or a quick jund start. Can also be boarded in and GSZed for.

Putrefy / Mortify / Maelstrom Pulse : Flexible removal that can be wished out.

Qasali / Harmonic : Artifact removal that can also come in game 2.

Wheel: not sure where g-yard based decks are going in this format.

A couple of beaters : It's nice to have the option to grab a large man with Wish.

Leyline of Sanctity : This deck hates getting Blightning'ed. Leyline is also string vs. burn / zoo and other discard.

Hide // Seek : The polymorph deck has gotten me twice online.

Google Search Golden Grahams and rename your deck, cereal names are for combo decks and Goldem Grahams is already Legacy Gamekeeper/Aurion Salvagers combo.

I was unaware of the internet law regarding cereal names. Least of all the selection of a pretty blah cereal. The unfortunate truth is you can't edit thread titles.

Goldeneye sounds like a decent alternative.

You can contact the Moderators to help you rename a thread. 4eak seems to be doing a stalwart job of that in this subforum as it is.

Maelstrom Pulse really needs to be in the 75, as it's basically Putrefy and Mortify at once that can also target 'Walkers (and therefore is amazing). Honestly, I would consider maindecking it over Dismember, especially with the mana acceleration available (It also frees up a board slot as you can cut Putrefy and Mortify).

I also agree that this should not have a cereal name, or anything relating to breakfast.

-3 fauna shaman
-1 wall of roots
-1 doran
+4 dark confidant
+1 knight

-1 shriekmaw
-2 dismember
+2 maelstrom pulse
+1 path to exile

Sb
-1 mortify
-1 doran
-1 harmonic sliver
+1 tidehollow sculler
+1 maelstrom pulse
+1 obstinate baloth

You're not utlizing any synergy w/ fauna shaman and you have gsz. Dark conf has raw card advantage and doesn't take mana.

Knight is just better than Doran with fetches in the format.

Pulses are going to be big with all those planewalkers in the format.

Wish sb is good if you run stuff that matches different situations. You either have art/ench hate or creature removal. Everything's redundant, not good enough.

I also think you should fit in 1-2 more green fetches since they get you arbor, shocks, and bosk.

Cards you can try out are Fracturing Gust sb and Treetop Village or Stirring Wildwood mb.

Sideboard:
-1 Obstinate Baloth
+1 Loxodon Hierarch

So you can utilize Glittering Wish to find the 4/4 lifegainer.

Not early, not all the time. There are already 3 KotR and 1 in the board.

Pulses are going to be big with all those planewalkers in the format.

We'll see. Jace is banned. Goyf and KotR also likelyl to be big, making Pulse awkward in certain situations. But overall I agree it certainly needs to be somewhere in the 75.

Wish sb is good if you run stuff that matches different situations. You either have art/ench hate or creature removal. Everything's redundant, not good enough.

It's modern. There are creatures. Artifacts. Enchantments. Occasionally you get burned early. Unfortunately there aren't many wish targets that deal with Emrakul or other 12 post spells.

I also think you should fit in 1-2 more green fetches since they get you arbor, shocks, and bosk.

... and builds Knight. I've found many shocks is bad, I just want a couple.

F Gust is a good call if some kind of metal craft deck / agent of bolas deck emerges.

I would really like to see Sun Titan as a 1-of in this deck. Yes, it does cost 6 mana, but if you hit a board stall at any point, he pulls you ahead fairly well.

I tried to put together a glittering-wish rock type deck for legacy before, not too different from this. You NEED Confidant, and Maelstrom Pulse, and either Mortify or Putrefy.

Finding a spot for Spellskite seems pretty good. He protects your guys and with Doran out, it's a 4/4 beater for 2 mana. It also has built in protection against splintertwin combo.

Once again, it's only partial protection, but yeah it works quite good against the Splinter Twin card. It does not work against Kiki-Jiki though, because it can only target a "creature you control".

Been a while. But I've played a wish deck twice since the prior ban-swath and top four'ed both times (~20-25 entrants). I've been trying just W/g. Black still has value, but a two color mana base makes the deck super smooth over a 5-6 round event. No mana troubles really ever, and you can run Ghost Quarters.

Here is the deck:

2 Baneslayer Angel
3 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Noble Hierarch
1 Mystic Enforcer
3 Mirran Crusader
1 Paladin en-Vec
4 Oust
3 Glittering Wish
2 Oblivion Ring
1 Garruk Relentless
1 Gideon Jura
2 Wall of Omens
2 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
1 Sword of Feast and Famine
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
2 Wrath of God
2 Stirring Wildwood
1 Sejiri Steppe
2 Marsh Flats
2 Sunpetal Grove
4 Razorverge Thicket
3 Plains
2 Forest
1 Temple Garden
3 Ghost Quarter
3 Horizon Canopy

1 Kitchen Finks
1 Qasali Pridemage
1 Knight of the Reliquary
1 Behemoth Sledge
1 Unmake
1 Harmonic Sliver
1 Vexing Shusher
1 Cold-Eyed Selkie
1 Loxodon Hierarch
4 Leyline of Sanctity
2 Intrepid Hero

Removal:

Couple of notes, one is Oust. I'm playing it because I absolutely hate Pathing a zoo decks men. It's miserable. They are always tight for mana and rampant growthing for them is awful. The other deck I see quite a bit locally is G/x Titan/Eldrazi and Pathing a wall of roots is also freaking miserable. Oust in the early turns where people are fetching and rampant cultivating Oust sometimes is sorcery speed plow. Oblivion Ring is what it is, slow clunky removal that deals with planeswalkers and other random nasty stuff (it hit an Elesh Norn among other offenders), it's bad vs. burn and non-planewalker zoo. It wouldn't be in the deck if I ran a version with black.

Mana:

23 lands often felt like too many given 4 hierarchs but with no ponder/sleight/brainstorm you can't run many fewer. I don't ever play standard so I wasn't sure how I wanted to split the various shitty standard dual lands (Razorverge and sunpetal). I think I really want 2 more Marsh Flats and less shit duals. With the colored mana you don't want more than one temple garden, it's awful to draw it.

You'll notice the deck has no GG and only WW and really can't get color screwed at all. That being said I think a couple of late game GG spells would be nice, namely 1-2 eternal witness and a thrun.

Men:

Wall of Omens was always fine and was great vs. zoo and burn. Mystic Enforcer could have been Thrun. I got lucky and drew my Baneslayers when I could cast them, late game. With Nactyl banned I'd like to try Qasali Ambusher since he might actually block Kird Apes and Loam Lions, in addition to his usual MVP play of: on the play, Marsh Flats go. Mountain -> Goblin Guide -> Swing. Fetch, Template Garden -> free 2/3 man.

Other spells:

Planeswalkers are pretty insane in modern. The split I had was fine, Elspeth is the best but I don't want to draw 2 in the first few turns. Garruk is OK, he can always make dudes which is a good thing to be able to do as a planeswalker, bolting a dude is OK also ... just not for 4 mana. 2 swords seemed fine, obviously the color depends on what you expect to face at your local store. I will say swinging through green blockers is awfully good, I might make the SoFI a body and mind for kicks next time.

Wishing. My wish selection was pretty good, I could always get a good man, an equip, or a disenchant effect. I think the Shusher was unneeded, in my 2 solar flare'esque matches Wheel might have been more useful.

There are quite a few options in just G/W:

http://magiccards.info/query?q=c%21wgm+f%3Amodern&v=card&s=cname

Even more if you include the W and G split mana stuff (like Unmake and Shusher). I'd like one that blew up planeswalkers, another reason for the black splash is you get much better wish targets in Pulse, Mortify, Putrefy, Sculler, Castigate, Hide / Seek and the quasi-Deed split card.

There are some huge bomb cards you could also put in there for when the game runs really long like Oversoul of Dusk or Novablast Wurm but I can't imagine those situations coming up too often. I think the Mystic Enforcer belongs in the wishboard. He's awesome when you have threshold and a hill giant when you don't.

Leyline is needed to beat burn. Intrepid Hero is great vs. Emrakul decks and vs. Titans.

Here is my list:

Main Deck:
2 Doran, the Siege Tower
3 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Noble Hierarch
4 Skinshifter
4 Spellskite
2 Sun Titan
4 Treefolk Harbinger

4 Duress
4 Glittering Wish
1 Maelstrom Pulse
4 Path to Exile

3 Forest
1 Godless Shrine
4 Marsh Flats
1 Murmuring Bosk
1 Razorverge Thicket
2 Overgrown Tomb
2 Plains
1 Sejiri Steppe
1 Stirring Wildwood
2 Swamp
2 Temple Garden
4 Verdant Catacombs

Sideboard:
1 Behemoth Sledge
1 Dauntless Escort
1 Doran, the Siege Tower
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Kitchen Finks
4 Leyline of Sanctity
1 Maelstrom Pulse
4 Qasali Pridemage
1 Unmake

Notes: Took out Thoughtseize in favour of Duress because I really only removed things that could kill Doran and also, more often than not, the losing 2 life mattered with all the fetch and shock lands i run for KotR.

I swap Duress out vs burn in favour of Leyline of Sanctity.

Overall, the deck topdecks very well and has very good protection for my threats. I run 2 Sun Titans because i can combo them with my Dauntless Escort from the sideboard, and they return everything else in my deck.

Do you not own Goyfs or just finding them to be underwhelming in many matches? Seems like with Duress you'd have a shot at a land, sorcery, something on turn two.

call me crazy but my list has 4 slots of a combo of skinshifter and tarmogoyf. tarmogoyf is the better creature in decks with a lower land count but mine runs 24 and 4 hierarchs. skinshifter hits 0/8 plant or can trample or can fly if need be. I feel he has much more utility even though he is slower.

I dont feel that modern is fast enough to require goyf over the stronger skinshifter (stronger for doran decks). Storm will be nerfed in a few months.

also. spellskites are pretty much better goyfs in my list. turn 2 creature with 4 power and can protect doran, gaddock teeg, sun titan.

made some changes to my deck recently and it seems pretty solid vs everything except Martyr Proc and Heavy graveyard-based decks. Will have to address that a bit more for future changes. Here is the list:

MAIN DECK:

2 Doran, the Siege Tower
4 Noble Hierarch
3 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Skinshifter
4 Spellskite
4 Treefolk Harbinger
Creatures [21]

2 Gideon Jura
Planeswalkers [2]

4 Glittering Wish
4 Duress
4 Path to Exile
2 Maelstrom Pulse
Spells [14]

2 Forest
1 Godless Shrine
4 Marsh Flats
2 Overgrown Tomb
2 Plains
1 Sejiri Steppe
1 Swamp
1 Temple Garden
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Vault of the Archangel
3 Razorverge Thicket
1 Stirring Wildwood
Lands [23]

SIDEBOARD:

1 Batwing Brume
1 Doran, the Siege Tower
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Leyline of Sanctity
1 Maelstrom Pulse
4 Qasali Pridemage
1 Unmake
1 Zealous Persecution
Sideboard [15]

Im absolutely loving gideon in place of Sun Titan. the one unblocked attack almost always wins it for me. Usually with this deck I run into large board stalls where neither side is in a great position to attack. Gideon's + ability lets me swing in for the win, and can also attack as a 6/6 post Wrath of God. very solid.

Punishment fists affinity in the rump and affinity can be a tough match. Depending on how many 0's they crap out you can X for 1 them pretty bad on turn 2 or 3.

i dont find affinity a hard matchup to be honest. with 10 ways to find doran in my deck, it shuts down their cranial plating and singal pest easily. they only have 3 shrapnel blasts in the deck to kill doran and i can redirect them to spellskite if need be.

what i find punishment best for is token flyer decks.

Right, I'm playing less Doran and more other men. Doran is a solid one in affinities hindquarters. The only affinity at my local weekly is the r/w which seems to have fistfuls of Dispatch which Spellskite is great for.

This is my current list ... with 9 main deck ways of dealing with the stupid pod. Also, IoK I suppose. I think the board is dependant on your local brews, there's a ton of burn and discard thus the white leyline. It also doubles as Grapeshit hate. The general plan though is 11 wish targets. The leylines could also be cages. Manabase building in modern is a bit of a crap shoot ... some games they seem great other games not so much. Without the smoothing effect of Brainstorm or top or true dual lands you just sometimes get humped. I'm trying to minimize color screw by making green the primary, with only W and B required for other spells.

I'd like to play Eternal Witness but she's terrible sometimes. I could possibly trim the mana dorks to less than 7 ... drawing multiples is sometimes awful. Mystic Enforcer isn't always the best but he evades he's huge; he can't be terminated; or pulsed and sometimes is just better than Thrun.

I hate more than 3/4 mana dorks in a deck like this... you really just need to keep drawing real cards lol. I like the Enforcer plan though, he's a real beating.
