View Full Version : [Deck] Mono Blue Control
A classic archetype which I love to play. I honestly have no idea how the deck will perform (it isn't like we honestly know what the metagame looks like after the bannings either). I won't count the deck out just yet though.
Here is an example decklist:
// Lands - 24
19 Island
4 Inkmoth Nexus
1 Academy Ruins
// Creatures - 6
3 Sower of Temptation
3 Vendilion Clique
// Draw - 6
4 Think Twice
2 Thirst for Knowledge
// Permission - 16
4 Spell Snare
4 Mana Leak
4 Cancel
4 Cryptic Command
// Artifacts FTW - 8
4 Vedalken Shackles
4 Oblivion Stone
// Sideboard
SB: 4 Chalice of the Void
SB: 2 Telemin Performance
SB: 3 Pithing Needle
SB: 3 Relic of Progenitus
SB: 3 Repeal
I'd love to see other decklists. I'd also love nothing more than for MUC to be a reasonable tier 2 deck!

Seat of the Synod is banned in Modern!
Also there are better counterspells than Cancel, i.e. Dissipate. It does more than cancel at the same cost.
Woops! I can't believe I forgot. Fixed.
As to Dissipate, I'm not sure if that is legal in Modern. I certainly don't like Cancel though, a replacement would be nice.

if you're already planning on planning sower and cliques MD, there is the option to go towards a mono blue fairie build with SSS and mutavaults.

IIRC, Diisipate has been reprinted in Innistrad.

Stoic Rebuttal looks better than cancel. Also Essence Scatter[/card], [cards]Remove Soul and Rune Snag look better than the 3CC counterspells.

needs more rune snag. needs more remand. ratchet bomb > oblivion stone. sideboard spell pierces. echoing truth > repeal.
i think declaration of naught needs some recognition/playtesting too, and in regards to the faeries idea, spellstutter sprite + familiar's ruse seems fun. telling time and/or serum visions could be good draw spells in the absence of ponder/preordain. we probably don't need disrupting shoal anymore with the recent combo bans, but we might still want it, i think it stays relevant all game if we can keep our hands full.
also, i don't really understand the inkmoths. i think i'd rather see them as mutavaults, (if you really want manlands) or ghost quarters/tec edges. a singleton minamo, school at water's edge could be funny with cliques and academy ruins.
I think rune snag is viable now that autopilot ramp decks are gone.
Woops! I can't believe I forgot. Fixed.

I didn't go over the spoiler so I don't know if Dissipate has been reprinted as Kicks mentioned, but if all else fails you could run Hinder over cancel. Still a 3 mana counterspell, but it's better than Cancel.

Dissipate has been reprinted in Innistrad. 2 Extended seasons ago, this is what I played:
4 Mutavault
1 Academy Ruins
1 Tolaria West
18 Island
4 Spellstutter Sprite
4 Vendilion Clique
2 Venser, Shaper's Servant
2 Meloku, the Clouded Mirror
4 Thirst for Knowledge
3 Vedalken Shackles
2 Umezawa's Jitte
4 Ancestral Vision
4 Mana Leak
4 Cryptic Command
3 Repeal
Now we cut:
-4 Ancestral Vision
-2 Umezawa's Jitte (was super good in here)
+2 Oblivion Stone?
+4 I have no idea what to add
I was quite the newbie when I played it, and could still get good results out of it, so someone with more skill (like, say, a squirrel) is likely to do better.

Use Think Twice. Pretty solid draw spell for a draw-go setup.

sideboard aside, i think i'd play something like this:
23 Lands:
16 Island
4 Mutavault
1 Tolaria West
1 Minamo, School At Water's Edge
1 Academy Ruins
10 Creatures:
3 Sower of Temptation
3 Vendilion Clique
4 Spellstutter Sprite
8 Draw Spells:
4 Think Twice
2 Thirst for Knowledge
2 Telling Time
13 Counters:
4 Spell Snare
2 Familiar's Ruse
4 Rune Snag
3 Cryptic Command
6 Artifacts:
3 Vedalken Shackles
3 Ratchet Bomb

What about a single Miren, the Moaning Well to combo with Shackles?
Ratchet Bomb is quite crappy, I think I'd rather be using Oblivion Stone. However, if the meta is really "Zooish", Bomb might be better. You could try dropping 1 Bomb to fit a single Oblivion Stone (lock with Ruins).
Familiar Ruse seems a tad situational, considering you're running 10 creatures (+1 the mutavault, in which case it's a cancel that eats a landdrop).
Repeal needs to find a way into your list, it's really awesome.
No love for Venser? That card is pure value. It's a shame we can't play Riptide Laboratory...

Is anyone still working with the list?
