So are you going to ban alters at this one like you did the last StarCityGames event I attended that you judged the Legacy portion for?

Were all alters banned or were they just especially strict on which ones were allowable?

Were all alters banned or were they just especially strict on which ones were allowable? At the last SCG Indy Legacy event (Legacy only; Standard was a different judge the day before), judge Kali did not allow about 95% of the alters in the room (borderless, full frame, etc.). This was the case even though higher level judges at the same table (who shall go unnamed) recommended they be allowed, and who could recognize the cards from 8 feet away, and who themselves have allowed the cards in the past (which have also been allowed at all constructed World Champs, Grand Prixs, and previous SCG events I have attended).

After speaking with some of the SCG reps after the event I was told that SCG does not like to step on their judges' feet and it is always their discretion of course, but that alters would likely be allowed in the future at events, and just wanted to confirm with Kali that this was the case, as she is not only a judge, but now the events coordinator. So, Kali?

It won't be up to Kali, it'll be up to Aaron Stickney, as he's the HJ for the event.

JACO,

SCG Indy was the first Legacy event I was the HJ. I have never been a fan of alters that extend past the borders of cards. I was also unaware of how popular this style of alters have become. On Saturday, I was approached by a player asking about his alters, and they had art that extended over the borders. I told him I was uncomfortable with this, and asked if he could find replacements. The next day, I was approached by many more players, and I turned them down as well. After speaking with the other judges and Event Staff who were more experienced in these matters than me, I did agree that I had been more harsh on the alters than I should have been. Any player who had approached me after that was still turned down, because I wanted to stay consistent on my ruling to be fair to the players who had approached me beforehand.

If I could go back and change it, I would. I learned alot about being the HJ of such a large event and what factors I need to take into consideration when making decisions as such. However, alters at each event IS at the discretion of the HJ, and for St. Louis, it will be up to Aaron Stickney. If I have the opportunity to HJ another Legacy Open, I will not be as strict about alters as I was at the Indy Open. If you have any further questions or feedback for me, please feel free to PM me or e-mail me at kali.anderson@starcitygames.com. Thanks for coming to our events!!
