I think I can confidantly speak for both Northern Virginia and Rochester when I say we shall be there. Whoo, Wizards decided to pretend our format exists for a day, of course at the stoke of midnight we go back to being a non-existant format, but what a day it will be!

It is good to know that Wizards has not forgotten Legacy completely. This tourney is in a perfect spot as it is central to New York, No. Virginia, Michigan, and Illinois. I hope this tourney has more attendees than GP Philly which had a very respectable turnout.

Provided that's not a "Super" Saturday for my new job, then I'm so there. Weird that it doesn't coincide with Origins. Renting out the Convention Center for a Magic tournament? What else is booked that day for the spot?

EDIT: Convention Center Calendar (http://www.columbusconventions.com/news/calendar_07.asp#may)
5/18-20 Star Power
5/19 Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame
5/19-25 National Defense Industrial Assn

The only stars will be Team Unicorn winning the event.

I was having a thought (yes, rare I know). Maybe we should start coordinating some travel plans soon so we can get group rates and advance purchase discounts. Motel 6 is $40 a night, and has a discount for 10+ rooms. You know what they say... there's no price too low.

Ta Jugs
11-07-2006, 03:03 PM
You get byes to any Grand Prix for rating it goes like this.

1800+: 1 bye
1900+: 2 byes
2000+: 3 byes
You cant get more than 3 at a gp so you cant like win a GPT and then have 3 more because of rating.

You are incorrect you can have byes based on rating to any GP even though it may say constructed or limited I am almost positive.

You can have byes, however the cuttoff is different for different formats, so using limited cutoffs is not useful since they will not be the rating cutoffs used.

Ta Jugs
11-08-2006, 03:35 PM
True but you can still have them

kirdape3
11-08-2006, 03:35 PM
Here's how the rating system worked for the last Legacy GP:

Constructed and Eternal ratings:

One Bye - 1850 or Pro Player Level 1

Two Byes - 1950 or Pro Player Level 2

Three Byes - 2025 or Pro Player Level 3

For both of the Legacy Grand Prix in 2004, the higher rating or Pro Level was used.

For most Grand Prix, Constructed is used for Constructed events, Limited for Limited events, and Composite for Nationals/Worlds.

The actual ratings numbers now are 1800/1900/2000 for all formats. Anybody with a 1800 Constructed or Eternal rating, or between 1 and 10 Pro Points, will have one bye.

What's worse, driving 2/3 of the country and losing in a Pro Legacy Event or bitching about not going because its too far to drive.

There is always the option of flying down to the event. Thats what I'm going to do for GP: Dallas, since its kinda far from Syracuse, NY.

The guy I know owns the buisness which does Screenprinting, Embroidery, etc, for t-shirts, Hooded sheatshirts, polos, blah blah blah of most any color...so they can probably come in awesome.

Last time we got t-shirts made for all the kids at my daughters school (less than 100). They ended up being $6 each in kids sizes. They were Neon Green with Handprints all over them, made to look like they were playing with fingerpaints, and the kids signed their names on their friends' shirts.

Being an amateur mean that you have no lifetime pro points and if u have never competed in a pro tour.

Actually that is what you win compared to other Amateurs.

So if you actually place first overall and have no Pro Points you will end up with both the $1.5k and the main $3k prize, along with a trip to the Pro Tour included.

From the Wizards site:

Tournament Byes (Byes are not cumulative throughout the season or year) Byes will be given to players in the Grand Prix based on the following criteria:

Third-Round Byes

* Players with a Players Club level of 3 or higher
* DCI players with a Constructed rating of 2000 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on the player's DCI Constructed rating on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix.
* Winners of Grand Prix–Columbus Trials

Second-Round Byes

* Players with a Players Club level of 2
* DCI players with a Constructed rating of 1900 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on the player's DCI Constructed rating on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix.

First-Round Byes

* Players with a Players Club level of 1
* DCI players with a Constructed rating of 1800 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on the player's DCI Constructed rating on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix.

...

Since it is a Legacy event, why the hell are they using constructed ratings? This point was touched upon a few pages back, but no one really noticed, apparantly. I sent the following message to Andy Heckt and Scott Marshall at Wizards. I should get a response in about a week.

"Since the format for the Grand Prix in Columbus is Legacy, why is it that the byes are only based on ratings in the constructed format? For Philadelphia in 2005(which was also Legacy), byes were based either on Vintage or Constructed ratings. It doesn't seem fair that players who do not play the format are being rewarded with byes and players who do play the format are being penalized."

I realized after I sent the message that I used Vintage instead of Eternal for the rating, but I think they will get the point. Who knows if anything will change, but it is worth a shot. I believe that anyone who is going to the event should send a message to Wizards regarding this issue.

That's why it should be Eternal or Constructed. The current set-up basically makes your Eternal rating worthless in Legacy.

I have worked my ass off to get my rating to almost 2000 just for this event. If this proves to be true there is no logic behind even having an eternal rating system.

Last season's Legacy GPs had both Eternal and Constructed ratings available. It's possible that it's just a typo.

This is exactly what happened before GP Philly. All the stuff about byes is form-written, and plugged into the site automatically. There'll be an announcement closer to the event that clarifies. Last GP, the Eternal ratings necessary to recieve byes were:

1 Bye - 1850
2 Byes - 1950
3 Byes - 2050

From what I recall, pro-levels recieved byes also.

The byes will use either Constructed or Eternal ratings, 1800/1900/2000. Eternal was left out of the page by mistake, since it's just copy/pasted.

Scott Larabee confirmed this last night, the page should be corrected sometime today.

So, this is nothing concrete yet, but if I decided to up and buy a plane ticket to Columbus for that weekend, is there anyone in the area who would be willing to house a total stranger from the intarweb, or perhaps to split room costs or something? I live in NW Washington, and I'm just feeling out some options here.

Actually, I didn't have Nantuko Shades, so he used Orders instead :) If I remember correctly, I had two Shades, so he played two Orders. Virtually the entire deck was mine, minus the cards he substituted because I never finished the deck.

EDIT: Okay, I lie, 1 Shade, I found the second at the event. I now have 4, plus al 4 Sinkholes. Too bad the deck is bad :-/

Thanks! The maindeck Withered Wretches and Dystopia out of the side made it particularly savage in that tournament's field. I was actually missing 4 cards from the final decklist, between L_A_M and myself: 3 Shades and 1 Sinkhole, thus the 3 Pump Knights and the Icequake (which was almost a Shadow of Doubt - I waffled on that one.)

My room is huge, and I can have like 8-10 guys in sleeping bags in my room. Then I have two spare bedrooms and we can fit 5-6 guys on sleeping bags in each of those rooms. Then we can fit infy people in the large living room.

But I think it will be a lot of fun. We have a large HDTV and an Xbox 360. And we're like 10-15 minutes from the GP. Plus, we live on the Southeast side of Columbus, so it's closer to the NY and VA guys than my old house on the Northwest side.

I am just being told via text message that I can have 20 people. To the guys in Rochester, I have a friend that goes to school there. Can you guys bring him in your car? Also, if that guy a couple posts above feels like paying $30 a night, then I welcome that. I am a poor college student after all. So I need lists of people coming from each team.

Anyone here want to go from Minnesota? Chris Pennock and I are thinking of driveing the fun 12 hours up there on Friday or possibly Thursday night. I have looked into the cost and it looks like a 2 person hotel room is about $40-$50 a night and gas + car wear and tear for 1400 miles would probably be about $300. This breaks down to:

3 people = $150/person
4 people = $ 125/person
5 people = $ 110/person

Send me a message if you would be interested in coming.

I think the great Janos_Wuryon is trying to say, don't bother on playing Hulk Flash because your going to get owned by hate all day. Then after the GP, your just going to get so frustrated that you will just rip up all those signed hulks. So what's the point then?

TheInfamousBearAssassin
05-07-2007, 09:10 PM
Its a pity that Janos_Wuryon doesn't actually know how the game of Magic is played.

If we know anything about the history of broken combos, it is this:

Broken combo < Broken combo hate < Broken combo hate broken combo.

The most successful decks will be the Flash-Hulk decks that hate on Flash-Hulk, since they'll also be fighting through the other hate successfully. In this case, probably U/B, but there might be another build. It's like Necro. There were decks that could be tuned to smash Necro. But the best ones were the Necro decks tuned to smash Necro.

The sooner people understand how versatile this combo is, and how many different ways it can be build to defeat the hate, the quicker people can stop pretending it's in any way fair and the faster we can get it banned.

I would be damn happy if I could play against Thresh and Fish and Sui Black all day.

Hulk Flash certainly is a tougher situation, but it can probably be treated like Goblins at an older Grand Prix. Although it may occupy a large chunk of the field, you might get lucky enough never to get placed against it, or at least only once or twice (at least on day one), and to get the right match-ups takes the same amount of luck one needs to fight their way through two days and steal a win. But to not go because Flash will be present is the same as not going because you probably won't win.

My plan, personally, is to not even try to marginally improve my HF match at all, win a third-round bye on the Friday before, hope all of the Flash decks lose an early game to Fish, and not face them all day. That way I don't have to destroy my deck in order to have a slightly bigger chance to beat a deck that may or may not be attending in numbers.

This looks like a GREAT way to go 0-2 or 1-2, because Hulk Flash just wins and wins and wins... brokenness will do that for you, and total stupid brokenness (like HF) will be able to go 50/50 with the dedicated hate decks and make it through to ruin your day. Oh, and you'll face it at the GPT too, I promise.

Well I won't be able to attend the GP after all. I just started my new job and they're a little close-minded about time off so soon, so I didn't want to bear that burden. I would have brought out the Polar Express, but unfortunately with the vast amount of Hulk Flash and anti-combo decks flooding the streets, the whole event is going to end up a sham anyways.

Let's be honest here, the format is in the Twilight Zone until June 1st. A Hulk Flash deck will almost certainly make finals at the GP and will become banned shortly thereafter irregardless of its performance, methinks. Good luck to all the Syracuse players going, especially my teammates in Darkness.

Hey, I'm looking for a ride. I think I just got that weekend off. So anybody from NoVA with an extra spot in their car, please let me know! Ahmead

Where have you been the last 4 weeks when we started hammering out ride and hotel arrangements? There's no room for you.

I was in court, jail, and ended up with no license for 2 months. But, I found a ride. I might even fly, I'm not sure yet.

Anyone from the NJ/ NYC area driving to the GP have room for one more? i neglected to buy a plane ticket back when they were cheap and now they are like 300 bucks. Anyway i'd throw in $100 for the trip there and back if anyone would hook me up with a ride.

I guess I have to win more byes, so I can make day 2 again.

Maybe in the future (May 2007), Goblins will be bad, and you'll get crushed! What'll you brag about then?

This was on the first page of the thread. I laughed quite hard when I saw this. Who woulda thunk he was right?

I'm getting excited. Today is the last day to prereg for the big show. I got my hotel room all locked up too. I sold my extra flashes, and plan on winning this whole event. And since flash is goin to ruin the turnout and make this the last legacy gp, I will be able to go out on top.

I think all you Flash-lovers are in for a little surprise...not to spoil your party, but I know for a fact that right before the GP, Aaron Forsythe himself will fly into the venue dressed in a Superman costume, land right in front of the Headjudge, and declare Flash (as well as Riding the Dilu Horse) emergency banned from Legacy for all times.

And there was much rejoicing, and cries of "Aaron saves the day", while those villains who had not shied away from abusing an instant costing 1U beat their chests in sadness and frustration, and left the GP in shame.

Good luck to all the Sourcers, even though it is GP Flash !

I'm really envious, and hope that a) There is going to be another GP in the future b) it is going to be somewhere in the Middle of Europe.

Good luck to you all.

Next time I might go crazy and join you, but keep us who not go updated. I will check the website from wizards each hour or so, but I'd really like some actual impressions of the event.

Just finished up with the GPT's. I played flash and went 3-1 in my trial. So close to three byes. yet so far. From the trials I have this to say. OMG HOW MANY FISH CAN SHOW UP. I think this is going to be more of a GP:Fish than a GP:Flash but we'll see tomorrow.

That's why you run some RWB aggro or boros to rape fish and hope not to meet flash first rounds.

No joke. I didn't actually play against any Fish (I did beat Hulk Flash, though), but it was everywhere. I suppose I'm part of the problem, though, as CounterSliver is sort of a Fish-y deck.

Well, I'm a bit dissapointed since my plans to go to Columbus went to scrap when I realizzed that booking a flight 2 hours in advance was not an easy task. Anyhow, I was wondering if any of you know if there'll be online coverage of the event, i.e. results posted during the day, etc. Thanx in advance. To any of you who'll be attending, beat HF for me.

Any word on the top 8 of the GPT that happened on Friday in Columbus? Or did they do that sort of thing this time around (I remember they did one when I signed up for Philly)?

There were nine or ten Trial flights (32 people each) running until eight, but the only ones I saw were single elim. I didn't get there until 7:00; maybe some of the earlier flights were swiss?

And yeah, I saw tons of Fish, lots of Thresh (not as much as Fish) and not many Flash, although I heard stories of Flash doing well.
