A week or so ago I finaly got off my ass and decided to send an e-mail to Liz Danforth (Artist of Portent amoung others). Scott S. (Overlord95) and I have wanted to get signed copies of Portent for our pimpin Thresh decks. I got an e-mail about a week ago responding, saying that she would be more than happy to sign as many cards as we want! But I also was very curious about the art itself and asked her about it, specifically Portent.

This was her response that I recieved today:

"The Portent painting was actually quite lengthily developed. The man
himself I wanted to be reminiscent of the sepia coloration of the old
Edward Curtis photographs from the late 1800s, when he was capturing
the last of the native peoples in native dress. (He fudged the facts,
we now know, but those images are some of the few that give us any hint
of that time.) That half of the painting was deliberately
monochromatic; the right hand half was equally deliberately
polychromatic. I wanted to touch on as many different cultural concepts
as I could in one small piece -- I'm not even sure *I* can identify
them all, any more! There are the Northwest Coast whales at the bottom,
the turtle that carries the world on its back, the arms are a nod to
Australian aboriginal art and the hands to almost every preliterate
culture touching equally universal spirals, the simplest Celtic knot,
(I can't recall exactly what I had in mind for the sunburst or the
snail-shapes), then subcontinent-India for the eyes ... In short, I
didn't want to "steal" any one culture's patrimony, and I did want to
express the universality of spirit. The man is blind, as Odin is
half-blind, in order to "see" beyond the everyday."

I never realized so much went into the work on just one of these cards.

Great convo

EDIT: Scott Fischer > Liz Manforth

I'm not here to compare artists, especially between a real artist and an imaginary one. I will say however that Scott Fischer definitely did not create the art for Portent or any other card in Thresh as far as I know. Therefore in this case Liz Danforth > Scott Fischer. Signed Portents FTW.

When I posted, your original post simply read "Text to follow" or something like that. Then you editted it again. Then you editted it AGAIN. That's why I made fun of you.

Anyways, it's always nice to talk to an artist, but signed Portents definitely =/= pimp. In fact, I play Mental Note over Portent simply because Portent has lame art. And if the Virginia crew tries to convince me otherwise while staying at my house, they can gtfo.

I have not sent out the 6-8 sets of portents yet to get signed so if anyone up in NY at the DLD wants signatures they can give me a set of Portents or Hymns to get signed. She has also done a number of other cards. Personally I want to get a Teeka's Dragon signed, that picture is so badass.

I really want to go get my Portents and Merchant Scrolls signned now...

Anyways, that's awesome. I loved the art of Portent, but I didnt think she put so much composition and cultural diversity all into one painting.

LOL I had to check which Hymn she did. Turns out she did a decent one (Tucker's is the best) but at least she didn't do the white trash black velvet wolf-and-magic-indian painting.

Tucker didn't paint any Hymn, as far as I know. You probably mean Hoover's (the one with the bearded wizard). Anyway, I prefer the wolf painting - it's the only one that actually feels aggressive enough for a disruption spell.

I think we can all agree that Kirschner's is the worst, though - why would a hobo jester and the Scream murderer suddenly start worshipping Tourach over a glass of wine?

Yep, the Kirchner one is what I'm talking about. It looks a lot like Tucker's work.

Evil Santa is, well, evil Santa.

The Kirchner one has a lot of mood in it; it's a bit abstract. Plus, if Stasis has taught us anything, it's that Magic art with clowns on it is always the best art.

You mean Susan Van Camp's? That is the one I like the most. Followed by Quinton Hoover, Liz Danforth (she did the people chanting in a circle), and lastly Scott Kirschner.

Holy necro!

The funny part is, I read the OP again without realizing the date, and thought 'Who the hell still plays Portent in Thresh?'

Good times.

Truly the single greatest Necro ever.

I read the OP. Then I started modding the thread - looking to delete posts 2, 3, and 4. Then I said to myself... "Caboose? When was the last time that guy posted?" Finally, I noticed the date of the posts.
