View Full Version : [Report] Enchantress at GPT Columbus?

Some slight pre-magic bullshit:

My friend and I (who ended up driving to and from Columbus with me) didn't have Mapquest directions printed out to get to the event, so we tried printing them out at about 2 am. The printer was screwed up due to my sister trying something stupid, and my friend left while I was messing with the computer in frustration. I restarted the computer only to see that a password had been installed by my sister. I hid the keyboard (if I can't access the computer, i'll be damned if she will) and left a note to have my mom force her to tell her the password once she woke up.

That didn't work.

I wake up an hour late (about 10:30 am) and quickly yank my printer and throw it in my car. I rush to my friends house and we print off the directions. 3 hours later and a lot of fast driving and we get to columbus for the GPT.

I scope out the people preparing decklists for the GPT. As expected, I am the only person Playing Enchantress (at least of what I saw). I came into this knowing I wouldn't win, but I can care less because I mainly came here to haggle with dealers (I work in sales, and I scored some badass deals from non-starcitygames people, including getting 2 free chome mox with my purchase of a $70 English Moat).

I finish my decklist and turn it in in time for flight 2 (the idea being that flight 1 would be full to the brim with Flash, moreso than other flights).

Here is what I ran:

Round 1- Tyler Wollenkopf (sp?) with G/W/U Thresh

Game one we both mull to 6, after which he opens with what I believe is tropical - Goose. I return fire with Forest, Utopia Sprawl (for W). He plays Tundra, Top, then hits for one. I play Windswept, crack for I think Savanna, then Argothian Enchantress. In response, he tops, but finds nothing. His next turn, he plays some cantrips, then swings for 3. Next turn I play Moat. My opponent seems sort of surprised and annoyed at the same time. After this he never attacks again. He plays Mages naming Sacred and Presence, but Parallax Wave (absolute bomb) takes care of them. I kill him with Pegisi.

Game 2 he gets more aggresive (eventually plays 2 mages naming Karmic Justice and Presence) and plays a Engineered Explosives (which is Seal'ed before he can activiate it). He also has the Top/Counterbalance thing going, but only manages to counter 1 Argothian. At one point Parallax Wave comes into play again, and removes his Mages, allowing me to play Presence and my Confinement. After awhile I get Words of Wind going, and he is forced to scoop up his board-BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM. With all of the Enchantments on the board, we forget that Wave ran out at the beginning of my turn. The judge (who was standing behind me the whole time) tells us to iriterate the gamestate and ends up giving us both warnings for what happend (I asked my opponent if he wanted me to conceed or not, as it really was my fault for the sloppy play-more on that later). Time is running out in the round and since my opponent has no board, he does the wise thing and conceeds. After this he gives me the limpest handshake ever, and I am partially scarred for life. Good guy though.

Round 2 - Andrew (sorry, couldn't get last name) with U/W/B Big Fish

Game one - I open up with Forest - Utopia Sprawl, he with Plains - Mother. Since I know no one is stupid enough to play WW at this event, I am somewhat relieved, as in my head I have a good match-up against fish. I play an Argothian, which is then forced. Next turn he plays a Underground Sea, which Duresses a Sterling Grove in my hand. I rip another one off the top, and then proceed to play it, along with another land. He plays Serra Avenger the next turn, after which I play Enchantress's Presence and A Solitary Confinement the next turn. He scoops.

Game two - I open with Forest-Utopia Sprawl (i'm lovin' it) and he with plains-mother. I don't have alot of notes for this one, but I deffinintly remember this dude playing 3 Meddling Mages in a row. Since I can't play Argothian Enchantress, Solitary Confinement, or Moat, I loose in short order.

Game three - not many notes on this one either, but the dude Engineered Explosives'd away my Argothian, Sterling Grove, and Sylvan Library, then played a Jotun Grunt with mom Back-up. Next turn I played Elephant Grass (my opponent Literally chuckled when I played it, I guess grass is scrt tek) but couldn't play its upkeep long enough. I died when a topdecked Moat would of probably given me the win.

Notes of Interest: I was probably the only person there playing Enchantress. Whenver I played, a large group of people formed around me to watch, all thinking why the hell would I travel just to play a deck like mine. After every round, I asked my opponent if they tested against this deck, something neither of them did (my second opponent literally forgot about it, and my first opponent took forever to name Sacred Mesa with Meddling Mage because he forgot how Enchantress won games). It is my thought that with proper tweaking, this deck still wouldn't of stood a chance in hell at winning the GPT.

I tried finding Sourcers at this Event, asking my opponents if they had ever been to the site (they all had, but didn't register), and talked to some dude playing Meathooks who "drove up" with Hanni. I also witnessed what is probably the most frustrating game of magic ever:

Finals of flight 1: some dude playing Hulk Flash with MD Bobs against B/W. Its game 3 and its tied 1-1. Hulk Flash guy is sitting on one Underground Sea, with all the pieces in his hand+ disruption. The BW player has two Dark Rits in his hand, draws and plays Masticore. The Flash player NEVER draws another land and is killed by the 'core.

Anyway, time for props/slops

Props:
Enchantress, for actually winning a round
Dude who gave me free Chrome Mox, I think it was Pandemonium Games
Round 2 Opponent for being a pretty cool guy
Me, for being a dealing god and getting much more $ out of my stuff than I should have.

Slops:
Round one opponent's handshake. Seriously.
Mom, for setting my graduation party on the 19th and thus not allowing me to scrub out of both a GPT and a GP.
[U]ME. Seriously, my playing was the sloppiest it has ever been ever. I don't have the means to travel like I used to (my job pays shit and I am scared of paying for gas) and the only gaming store around me isn't competitive minded (a grand total of 2 people play somewhat competitively). I knocked over cards, forgot to sylvan, forgot about wave, didn't do that cool card-draw bit where you draw, place the card on the table, then take it into your hand, forgot to sideboard again game 2-3 round 2 (after I took out all my artifact/creature bounce for stuff like Spreading Algae, only to find out he had 2 Undergound Seas and 6 black spells total), and mostly came off as a complete dipshit novice who looked like he actually thought this was 1-2 years ago and thought Enchantress was actually viable.

All and all though, I had alot of fun, there and the way back (we accidently took US 50 East all the way to Hillsborough before realizing we were going the wrong direction). I wished I could of met Sources, but i'm sure I saw some in addition to them seeing me (I wore a blue dress shirt, with a white IU hat).

Did you go 1-1 drop? Where is the rest of the report? Props for playing enchantress, but I kind of wish there was more.

GPTs at the event are single elimination.

That guy in the finals of flight 1 was Kadishack, and everyone standing around him was us sourcers.

I'm going to assume that kadishack was the B/W player. Do you know who the other kid was by any chance, because I was almost certain that he was part of Meandeck or something.

This also means that I deffinitly stood by Sourcers for like 10 min straight without knowing it. Were you guys the group with one dude wearing an orange Excel-saga shirt?

If you are, then let me tell you this:

I came damn close to asking that female judge to go to dinner, because she was hot (one with short brown hair).

Hey, Zeus!

I know Andrew, your 2nd round opponent, he's from Minneapolis, but drove there with another group of friends. And I was watching that game too. :frown: On your last turn I watched you not sylvan, maybe for the loss. I was happy for him though.
I'd be interested to know how you did at the GP.

You should of been there for the massive self-ass kicking I gave myself the whole drive home, as I was pissed as all get-out about how much I sucked at playing that day.

Andrew was a cool guy though, he deserved the win. How did he end up doing that day anyway?

Also, I wasn't able to attend the GP, but I really wanted to. I'll probably be there for Gencon though (probably only for Legacy as well, unless someone has some sweet Warh40k stuff, like Imperial Guards painted as Wehrmacht or something).

No, Kadi was not the B/w player. I'm not sure who that guy was. Kadi was playing fish with a hulk transformational board. And no, he's not on Mean deck, he's from Syracuse, so the closest one there would be the Epic Syndicate.

Yeah that was me getting savaged by that dumb as fuck B/W player. But he did shit the pants day 1 of the Grand Prix while I laughed in his face since I was 6-1-2. That was a good moment for me.

Kaddy, I way very glad that you made day 2 as it was quite an accomplishment. I just don't like people name calling other players because the only reason they won was because the matchup favored them. It may be true he was a terrible player and just got lucky that he won, but there is some luck in playing this game.

I just wish that all players would accept this fact that it does happen from time to time. I would never wish ill will on any player that I face in a tournament because even though I might be upset of the result of the match, I would still wish them the best of luck in all their future matches. I think comments like these are mean spirited and shouldn't be part of the game

Thing is he was a dick to me since the start of the match so he had it coming. I know it normally isn't nice to do that but in this case I was frustrated that I lost and needed to vent my anger. I probably should not have but it won't happen again.

I didn't know the whole story with your match in the finals of the GPT. I was just trying to make a general comment on what I hear from a lot of players when they lose. The number one person in Syracuse that complains is of course Jason Wallace hands down.

I'm a fan of yours Kaddy, I was just trying to make a generalized point.

Keep up the good work and hope to see you in more bigger events playing. :)
