I get back from vacation a week before this. Im realy likin all these tournament spots in MA.

It's great that MA has all these Legacy tournaments, but how come they're all in Western MA, or at least outside the greater Boston area?

Maybe I am misunderstanding the population distribution in MA ...

I raise the question as someone living in Boston who doesn't want to drive 2 hours each way to a tourney (yes, I know, I'm lazy).

I plan to attend the Vintage event, as well as this. I really love the fact that Hadley has begun doing real Magic events (aside from T2, etc), and plan to make it to as many as I can.

I really wish you were doing these Sundays. Saturday conflicts with every large DCI sanctioned event ever, not to mention my 12 hour work day..

Those are some great prizes, I wish I could make this.

for some reason all the students at my school call me paul wall, but there is no relation. That sucks that Bane can't come (you guys are great to play with), but as long as two other places in the area are running legacy on Sunday, it doesn't really make sense for me to do it too.

but as long as two other places in the area are running legacy on Sunday, it doesn't really make sense for me to do it too.

Exactly, it also means that we can have 2 big Legacy tournaments in a weekend depending upon what the stores decide to do, which is awesome.

In other notes....
MA = Massachusetts
MD = Maryland
Montana =....who cares, it's Montana....
MI = Michigan
6th grade geography or easy Google FTW (if you have not yet passed the 6th grade, my apologies...)

Great tournaments in NOT Boston area, MA....hmmmm, if the sparsely populated central/western part of the state can hold these events, why exactly can't you lazy, unmotivated slackers get ONE store somewhere in Greater Boston to so the same? Quit whining, get off your (collective) ass, and get to work...fucking slackers.

What 2 other places, I only knew of 1 and you left there to open your own store which by the way is the best I have seen in a long time. Considering you have everything that I need to fill my binder.

Leasing in Boston is much more expensive. I really think that they would fail to make a profit in Boston becuase of the relatively low popularity of the game of Magic. I really think that's why we fail to see any popular shops in Beantown. Plus the Legacy format isn't as popular as Type 2 (Get on the ball, YMG!) and people are too stubborn to pick up a Legacy deck and support the format (Damn you casual players!)

What does leasing have to do with anything? You hold tournaments in game stores (or civic space that you reserve) not in rented halls (unless you are a Premier level event). Speaking of which, New England doesn't get mass multiple hundreds to come to those (like Regionals - of which NE has 2 or States), do they? Greater Boston doesn't have leventy-million people, does it? Take a small percentage of leventy-million & you have decent sized tournaments (plus those of us who might take the train in....). As excuses go, those were sub-standard, go work on them & bring back some better ones (or better yet, go talk to gamestores & actually get a tournament going.....).

Every once in a while, the Wizards Duel in Brockton has "Top Card Tournaments", which basically equate to facing janky decks in an attempt to win one card which the owner usually massively overvalues ($25 for Player Rewards Voidmage Prodigy? Wtf??). Did I mention all Legacy events there are 10 proxy and unsanctioned? Even with Underground Seas to the 1st and 2nd place finishers and a $5 entry fee offered at the last tournament, we could only get 6 people, not even the 8 minimum required to play for the Seas. 1st place got something like $16 store credit, 2nd-6th got nothing other than the boosters you get for playing. My point is that eastern Mass stores try at least, but the players here are just lacking.

For those interested, there is plenty of parking in the lot. No need to worry about that. For the people whose parents are driving them, there are shopping plaza's lining the road for miles. If you have never been to any of Kevin's events, they are top of the line (sanctioning of the Mana Leak Open courtesy of Off the Wall Games). I hope to see everyone there.

oh man, another doubleheader. the grand opening one on saturday was a tough day (though very fun, thanks). i had been planning on ignoring the 10th release, but now i guess i'll have to do both as i cant realy pass up a magic tournament if i'm already gonna be there.

might i suggest moving the start of the legacy tourny up to atleast Noon, if not earlier, cause i suspect you'll get as good a turn out to this as teh grand opening, and with these kinds of prizes it realy would be better to actualy have a cut to top 4.

OffTheWall

There would still only be one 3-0. I honestly don't think it would do anything other than make it more confusing than necessary.

EDIT: actually, I just thought for a minute, and making it a swiss doesn't change a thing. If you lose in the first round of the top 8, the best you can hope for is 5th place.

Come on, 10 people showed to that tourney. And you haven't been in the Finals for a long time for these 'actual' tournies. So, just a couple things. Shut up and actually prove yourselves, you guys act like your god's gift to Magic, but that's a little too cocky for a team that has only had 1 'member' actually Top 8 an real tourney. Everyone needs to stop stroking their E-penises, you cant ever be positive that you will win a tourney, because chance plays to large of a role in this game. I have put alot of testing in my deck, and i am pretty positve that i will atleast top 8, if i top 4 then great for me... I atleast walk away with more then I brought to the tournament.

From what I have seen. Death and Taxes is an extremely good deck. kudos to the builder. I think the two teams should have their best 2 players play for fun against each other in team competition for bragging rights. From what I have seen the only 2 players on Team Necro that are doing the talking are Bane and GoGoGadget(sillymetalgat) I think it would be a great idea and additional promotion for the store to have a best of the best tournament. To everyone participating: Seriously, shut up with the whole "I'm gonna be an ass" thing. It gets old... fast. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for the gloating and a bit of goading, but seriously, lay off the personal insults/attacks. It's one thing to say "my team is the best team in the world and I roxor" (hopefully partially in jest...), and completely something different to say "this team sucks and everyone on it is a retard, especially so-and-so and this deck is horrible". I enjoy a little friendly competition, but we all should be able to go out afterwards and have a (root)beer, or at least be social with one another.

Ohh and just to clarify, I win the Sea Drakes. Sorry, but I've decided not to scrub this one :-P, which means only first place is left.

P.S. Death and Taxes is a reasonable deck splashed blue. I won't say it deserves DTB, but I'll grant it's making headway. However, it's not all that and a bag of potato chips...

Which is a vast improvement on all the other tournaments where you missed Top 4/Top 8 because either A) you sucked or B) you were too much of a pansy to actually show (which didn't stop you from running your mouth). There is an old expression 'put up or shut up' which you should contemplate all possible incarnations of (including the two obvious ones....that 'put up' requires both you showing up & placing in single elim, although there are other possibilities as well). Hopefully this will garner an outstanding turnout as Kevin has a great store & we should be focusing on the positives such as that & there being multiple high-incentive Legacy tournaments monthly within a short drive.

You will try and show up. From the sounds of what you are saying "we will win these" that must not pertain to you, considering you will not be there. That means your team will win and you will take them as yours. I. myself think teams are just another way of people who can't get their own cards so they form a team of people that get the cards for them.

I do not think I have a good chance of winning but I am going to have fun and enjoy myself. If I win good for me, it is only a game, we should enjoy playing. People read your post bragging about how they are going to win it all and it discourages the new players who decide thay have no chance of winning so they do not come. If all of the noobs back off than that leaves a few good players and it also makes it harder for a so called pro who only plays small tournies to win. I am only trash talking players who always brag on the source that they will be there and they don't even show. I personally will be there to support Kevin's store. If I win good for me, If I lose then hopefully I had fun and enjoyed myself.

Remember you are not a top tier player if you borrow someone elses deck that wins tournaments.

You will try and show up. From the sounds of what you are saying "we will win these" that must not pertain to you, considering you will not be there. That means your team will win and you will take them as yours. I. myself think teams are just another way of people who can't get their own cards so they form a team of people that get the cards for them.

As far as who I am "I am Kingfish" and that is all you need to know. When you decide to show up in Hadley, then you will get to meet me face to face.

By 'we will win these' I meant my team. I wont claim the sea drakes for myself but you can be sure anyone on necro will have access to drakes. Teams are about sharing glory and victory. Maybe your not on a team for a significant reason.

The only person talking shit that probably isnt gonna show is troopatroop and he basically does it in any tourny thread. I was simply claiming my team will win them. They will, I assure you.

Its also pretty rude to boycott a store in your signature. At least without explaining yourself. In my eyes its a priveledge to have the stores we do in MA and Im glad it supports legacy, even in a weak way.

Are you Ryan Krueger?

Why would we need access to 8?

@Kingfisher: Pro's actually netdeck/borrow decks from other people ALL THE TIME but thanks anyways. Its not the deck, Its the skill level of the person playing the deck.

I dunno, I kind of enjoyed Samantha's rant against the mean (and boob-distracted....). About time someone from the other gender put Magic players in their place  As for the trash talking, most of it lacks class but is a staple in tournament threads around here, hard to argue with a tradition (even a stupid one...). It does have the advantage, however, of motivating players to have to live up to their ill-conceived boasting (cough Derek cough) and provides gleeful ammunition for post-tournament eating of crow.

There is some truth to that, although sometimes you have to wait until they get them back from someone else they lent them to, by them they are already banned and you can't play them anyways.

On a side note, this goes out to Team Necro, I harbor no hard feelings towards anyone on your team.

So, apparently Massachusetts trash-talking is like watching retards with oven mitts slap-fighting.

Some important notes:

1) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any deck built in MA has actually won a tournament outside of MA. Just sayin'. A pissing contest over who the best team in Massachusetts is seems somewhat like getting into an angry argument over who the greatest ever Iranian rapper is. Is there a good reason to even possibly care?

2) You probably shouldn't talk shit at all unless you're good at it, but you should certainly wait until you win a tournament with more than twenty people, where at least a few of them are actually good at the game.

3) Having boobs doesn't actually make your opinion any more relevant or the statement "my SO beats you all the time" any less sad. Do you beat them at Magic all the time? Then you have no business talking shit.

4) You play a pretendy fun time game of pretending to be a wizard. At tops, you get to be the mightiest wizard in the realm. That's about it. You can stop taking yourself seriously now.

I highly doubt I will win but I do know I will have fun. We should all put aside are ranting about who is better. Consider this, you are only as strong as the weakest member of your team. Yes NY has some larger tournaments but they have in my opinion not proven themselves in this area. I must admit, they are good players In NY. Just remember we all learned how to play about the same way and this is a game meant to have fun. Considering this is Team Necro area and no New York team has traveled out here lately to shut down Team Necro. I give them the odds on favorite to win. Team Necro only has good players on their team currently and they are growing almost weekly. I hope everybody who has put in their 2 cents decides to show up and play.

I guess the last TMLO doesn't count since Day 2 was split between a Woosta player & Watcher (Albany might as well be considered part of the MA metagame since we have the only tournies that can attend 'locally') Oh, and the decks were developed by the players & teams locally.

i havent done enough sealed deck tournaments to know about how long they average, so i'm sort of curious if someone could give me a clue as to when i might get home after being in both tournaments and then driving just over an hour back to worcester.

speaking of going back to worcester, if anyone in worcester is interested in going to this (for both tournys) but is lacking a ride or wants to conserve some gasmoney, there's still room for one more in my car (after we shove allan and bill in). PM me if you wanna join our carpool to hadley.

He beat every opponent with the help of people correcting his mistakes and his pure bad playing factor. Anyone can build a deck that all it does is work in circles. I did not beat him in top 8. I quit because in 2 games he did nothing but piss me off with his annoying deck. Also I didn't see many NY'ers in top 8, but I did see 4 members of Team Necro in top 8. Guess Necro put their money where there mouth is. This is obviously Necro Country.

Yeah, so a quick summary, will post more later. I was running Trinket Angel Stompy (lovingly referred to as Tas, also the name of my cat...). I faced:

Regular Rounds (4-1-1):
Random GB badness: W 2-0
UG Madness: W 2-0
Solidarity: L 1-2
CRET Belcher (Peter Rotten): W 2-0
TES: W 2-0
Relic Orb: Draw

Finals (5th going in, 3-0):
Sui Black: W 2-0
Relic Orb: W 2-0
BRU Affinity: W 2-1

Basically, I almost beat solidarity, had it down to 2 with chalice @ 1 out but he got echoing and went off. I got somewhat lucky against Relic Orb, we had played a test game during the draw into T8, where he whooped me. Control matchups tend to be fairly bad for me, but I can do the aggro role, and I did, and I also knew what to name with mage at that point thanks to the test. I made ETW cry by explosiving its ass two games in a row first matchup, and then explosiving it the first game, and the second game hitting chalice for 1, 2, and 3. And finally, I beat affinity, partially because of a play mistake, though I had made a smaller one game 1 as well (not topping with a mana open at end of turn and thereby getting the mana I needed for equipment), he sacced all his artifacts to ravager G2 in response to a cataclysm. Sadly, he didn't do this one at a time, so I just removed a counter from jitte to kill it (called Kevin over just to make sure, but yeah). Game 3 I drew into 3 Pariahs, secret sideboard tech against them, goblins, and FS. It's basically a fog and a creature kill packed into one card against Affinity, which they don't tend to like.

I'm actually on both, sorta... Which involves a funny story and a shiny shirt. I mean, come on, who wouldn't say yes to a shiny shirt!? But anyways, I like both teams, and I won't dis either. I'm hoping neither will kick me off, but I guess that remains to be seen :-P.

And as for pwning one team or another, the results were rather spread out. I faced no one from Necro in the finals, but Ben was there and placed 3/4. I actually am not sure if anyone else from FBC made it, which is sadness. I mean, it woulda been great to see eternal gardens represented :-P. And then there's Bill, who used to be on both teams, does he count as a third and me as a half?

EDIT: I completely forgot, I'm not on either team at all anymore. I've recently joined Team Hawt Stuff. It's the team where you need to be really, really ridiculously good looking to join. You know, like myself, and, ohh yeah, Jess and Sam (Pixie), and Ben Stiller as well, should he ever decide to play. The team was created when Jess broke up with Nate and informed me I was her new boyfriend. I think this made Sam jealous, because she came over as well and put her arm around me. And so was the team formed. Sadly, Jess rekindled things with Nate 3 minutes later and informed me that, no, I was no longer her boyfriend. The goals of the team are primarily to get me play. We consider this a challenge, but we should be up to the task.

Gratz on winning, that was well done. Quite a few of the rest of us from both teams placed just outside Top 8 at 4-2, be interesting to see how the FBC vs Necro matchups in the tournament itself ended up, just for kicks, everyone continued our pattern of fierce & bitter internet viciousness followed by amiable IRL co-existence.
My only 2 losses were to people who made Top 8 (slay & fuckingbryan) so it was a pretty successful tourney overall.

Edit: 44 people btw according to the TO, awesome turnout

The 2nd place Vial Affinity deck was piloted by my unregged friend Noah, and the Top 8 Sui Black by my friend Andy, who has been playing Legacy for approximately 2 weeks. I'm trying to get them on the Source ASAP.

KillemallCFH
07-15-2007, 01:56 AM
Yeah, that was awesome. Not for me, but for TWO of my friends who made top 8. It was:
1. U/W Trinket Angle Stompy (tividar)
2. Vial Affinity (Noah Symynkywicz!!!, unregged)
3-4. Relic Barrier/Winter Orb Lock-down deck (John C)
3-4. Rg Gobs (Forceofwill)
5-8. Monoblack Sui/Aggro (Andy S. [I think he just registered under the name 'The Coming Curse'], who has been playing Legacy for less than a month)
5-8. UG Madness (fucking bryan)
5-8. Fairy Stompy (insertnamehere)
5-8. Rg Gobs (Slay)

BRU Affinity: W 2-1, G2 he made a big mistake not saccing for ravager one at a time, G3 my pariah tech kicked in and I fogged/killed a creature for 3 mana 3 times in that game.Yeah, he tends to get over-zealous in situations like that and doesn't think it through enough. He also made a huge mistake facing Bane when he sacced his entire board sans an atog and 2 DotVs in the face of a Leyline, therefore doing no damage. Somehow, though, he still won.

Also another notable mention: our friend Brian, who is also new to legacy, went 3 - 3 with Mono-red Burn.

EDIT: Also, I want to try to put some faces on some Sourcers that played. I met a few, but I know there were many who I didn't meet. What do you look like and what deck were you playing? I was the one with long hair, glasses, a 3 Inches of Blood shirt, and playing UG Madness w/ Goyf.

you cant forget 9th place: Me. yay. found out about this site today, figured i would register, the tourney was a great success (que borat sound clip) and at least i top 4'ed the tenth release to make it worth my time. This extend my current streak of first loser finishes to 9 in a row. i will take on all comers in a 'who has the worst tiebreakers contest'

but anyways, give it up for kevin, who has an awesome store and knows how to run the tournaments

Was a great tournament and a very fun day. Thank! Kevin.
went 3-0 before my luck ran out and i was put back into my rightfull place of x-x (3-3 in this case) by an affinity deck that was too fast and two matches worth of wastelands that prety much always wreck my records.

can someone explain how it is possible that in the last 6 or so tournaments that both me and scrumdog have participated, we have been matched up every single time? his deck WRECKS mine! (stupid tabernacle and friends) I've got a nerveous habit of chating "i hate your deck" continously while playing him now-a-days.
it would be fine if this happened with some random person i barely know, but i'm the one driving him to half these events, knowing that i'm basicaly bringing an automatic loss to the tournament that i will be 100% sure to be matched up against (not that he wouldnt be able to go if i refused to bring him, but maybe if i kicked him out of the car like half way there i could get an extra win)

oh, i meant to ask, did any 4-2s make it to top 8? or was 4-1-1 the lowest record to make it?

For the next big tournament Kevin holds, I will be doing nametags so we can put faces to personas  When Kevin starts that thread, post if you want a nametag (although last minute IRL requests will also probably be honored...). Hmmmm, I feel kinda bad for Roddy (I actually jigged a quick happy dance when we were paired Round 6) so I need to build a new deck it seems. Kevin has an awesome store & runs a great tournament, if you have the chance to go for any event you should do so. Also, his single prices are extremely reasonable for a brick & mortar store, right at the online horizon, we should all help his business in that way as well (remember, Ebay has never yet held a Legacy tournament for anybody, the ungrateful bastards...).

KillemallCFH
07-15-2007, 11:06 AM
Yeah, his prices for singles are awesome. I picked up a couple of Deltas before the tournament for $12 a piece, which is the best price I've seen them at sans the occasional eBay fluke. Keep up the good work, Kevin!

I would like to thank everyone that showed up for both the Legacy event and the Tenth release. I could not have hoped for a better turnout or a better group of players. Thank you all again.

Now on to the future. The next big event will be on August 18th (Saturday). Same format as this one, however I am not sure what people would like to see for prizes.
I have FBB trops. but having 2 as first prizes seems a little lame. my other option is to try and get a play set of Berserks, a piece of power (which I am not thrilled about since it is not a legacy card), Grim tutor, or more duals. Let me know, I am very flexible, and will try to provide prize support that people want.

Lol was it was sarcomancy right, thats the only card im missing. I was so frustrated with mana flood that day that I left in a hurry. Seriously I averaged like 8 lands, and 1 game and I think I hit 13 lands in one of them. I played 9 games that day and got flooded 8 of them. It was completely ludicrous. What I don't understand about Mass is why everyone just doesn't play Goblins. It is ALWAYS in the T8 of the larger Mass tournies. Two builds in this one and two builds in the one I went to quite some time ago. People seem be talking about Relic Barrier (which is probably quite sucky) and have negelcted to mention that the best deck in the format probably put up the best overall results.

I think I'll just play goblins and pwn MassMeta next week. /sligh.

Isn't this true about just about every Meta though? When ISN'T goblins putting consistent numbers in T8? If so, I haven't heard about it.

I'm fairly sure there were at least 6 Goblin decks at the tournament, having 2x end up in the Top 8 in the hands of experienced pilots doesn't seem improbable. However, once in the Top 8 the Goblins got handled. Where were all the decks that are supposed to hate out the little green men (or race them)?

tivadar
07-16-2007, 01:37 PM
Well, I never saw goblins, which I was rather sad about actually. Green Goblins is somewhat rough, but with explosives and cataclysm mainboard, not mention knight, jitte, and sofi, I don't tend to worry terribly about my goblins matchup. Goblins is certainly good, but there's enough hate out there for it as well and those decks tend to do well, as I'm assuming scrumdogg was trying to point out with sarcasm, something that never worked online for me :-P.

Anyways, story being, at the start of the day I was commenting that there looked to be a lot of goblins there in my "survey" of the meta (clearly JUST for academic purposes, really!). Goblins was by no means under-represented, and I think it performed as is to be expected.

Not sarcasm, my friend, merely dry understatement  Goblins were a respectable percentage of the tournament & well represented in Top 8. Lost to FuckingBryan (with a Y....) as well as Slay, but if my only losses are to people who Top 8, how upset can I be? Someone remind me (damn Alzheimer's) to collect deck sheets after the next tournament from Kevin so lists can get posted easier, thanks.

PS Prize possibilities for next time: Berserks would be awesome, FBB Duals would be awesome, duals are always good - items that you don't see everywhere or are staples that insta-convert into cash are always going to be good incentives.

For lists it's not that keven is too lasy to do it he just pastes it's up to the deck builder if they want to share their deck list. as for that affinity player in top 4 he made a ton of mistakes and still managed to get insane draws against me.

Neither you nor Jay ever get to complain about insane draws, you topdecking whore-bags.... It was fantastic to talk to all the people who were new to the format but excited enough to buy the cards, put in some playtesting & come to a major event. In a break with longstanding tradition, most of them didn't bring sucktastic homebrews/ports to their first Legacy tournament...I don't know if I'm happy about that or not but it is a good thing as sites like this are apparently having some effect

I was also surprised to see so many new faces playing real decks. Maybe it speaks for all the guests we have on the site.

Whats up with that? Registering takes 2 minutes.

For tournaments that don't make the 50 player Threshold for the Historical Top8 thread it would still be useful to post the results and relevant information in the Top4/Top8 thread in the Open Forum. At least that can serve as another source of information about Legacy tournaments. Could someone who knows all the information for this tournament post it there?I posted the results in the Top4/Top8 thread (http://mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?p=145700#post145700), as well as in this thread somewhere.

Thanks for running the best affordable tournaments I could ever go to Kev. For more prizes try some foiled out legacy staples. A set of Meddling Mages is great but a foil DCI judge set is a real trophy to take home.

FNM Brainstorms and soon FNM Ringleaders will be nice prize support.

Rare stuff like the Sea Drakes are great, Id love to see Ravages of War or Moats.

Ya know those foil promo exalteds you wanted to enter into a tourney? You know I'm eyeing them. I'll have to go for the shins of anyone who would beat me in a tourney for those!

Here, I'll fix your Slops.

Were you looking to join team Hawt Stuff P R? You're one sexy dude!

So like, I can join? I'm sure many others will concur, but I am an absolutely beautiful person.

Well, you'd have to be judged by our 4 current female members, Sam and Jess...

So I'm really curious whether Fuckin Bryan is on the source or if this is just a name that we started calling him in this thread and now it's going to stick... He was the guy with the glasses running UG madness, right? I played against him early I'm pretty sure, seemed like a nice guy/good player. Unfortunately for him, I had played against UG madness at GP, so I knew just how to board/how to play the matchup. Even so, the games were close.

i believe that is his name on the source, and if i remeber correctly, it would be jessie who started that, I think. he's my best friend pretty much, and i honestly think he is one of the most consistent Madness lists out there. he makes top 8 every fuckin time. fuckin bryan.

also just like to note that he split first place in the 10th sealed playing a deck that ran Phage the Untouchable, Stun and Fear. L.O.L!

and i think we were already done with this discussion, but to make top 8 you had to be 4-1-1 and even that wasn't good enough, because that was my record and i got 9th. oh well

Fuckin Bryan here... (the source wouldn't let me be Fuckin Bryan so they changed it to FN Bryan if your curious) anyway, yes im the UG madness guy with glasses, yes jess coined my name, and yes Kevin was to afraid to yell Fuckin Bryan in a room full of crowded people so he went with Bryan with a Y.

BTW congrats on the win Eric

Well, not sure how relevant it is to people in your area, but that is the day after the Legacy Champs @ GenCon, so there could be a conflict there. Of course, if no one from there is going to GenCon, it's not a problem in any way.

Just thought I'd point that out.
