I defeated Di 2-0.

I have to admit, that really was the unfair matchup of the Quarters. How many turns total was the match?

And Parcher is happy to see I might get to skip international shipping this time!!!

Van Phanel

I got this from the old Thread:

Seed 1
Seed 8

Seed 5
Seed 4

Seed 3
Seed 6

Seed 7
Seed 2

Is this still accurate? If so, I'll have to play Wastedlife in the Semis, correct?

Atwa
07-30-2007, 03:16 PM
Yes, you have to beat Wastedlife in order to lose to me in the finals :)

Btw Parcher: That envelop still has a good chance to fly over the big blue sea. It might just be a country nearer to the US, too bad shipping rates don't matter for those 100 miles.

Van Phanel
07-30-2007, 03:23 PM
I won't mind an all-European final at all. However, I fear we'll have to rediscuss the part about me loosing. Also there is still something left for us both to do until we get there.

And I have to admit, that my matchup against Wastedlife is worse than Adan's was, and Adan still lost.

Anyways, cya in the finals.

Atwa
07-30-2007, 03:26 PM
I do hope to have that all european match (and not with an Hungarian, sorry Illissius:))

Just do your best, I'll do the same.

Anyway, to everybody: Good Luck!

Adan
07-30-2007, 04:17 PM
Well, I didn't saw removal, I didn't saw any Counters except 1 FoW and I didn't saw any Counterbalances.

And no Explosives against those pesky Goblins. Mah...I'm pissed of Magic, especially because i missed that Mana Drain only because I was colorscrewed at the Vintage Tourney on Friday -.-

But may I ask how the prizes are going to be divided? Or is it "the Winner takes it all"?

Atwa
07-30-2007, 04:38 PM
Winner takes all. Parcher already stated that at the beginning of the tournament.

Game 1 was slow because he Brainstormed into crap or something, but still killed me by like turn 5. I actually would've killed him by then, but he had 2 Orim's Chants in a row to stall me. Game 2 he killed me on turn 2 or 3, I can't remember.

Good luck to those still in.

He probably would indeed.

I hope Tacoscape and Illissius play their match soon. Tao and me were finished the earliest of the top 8 matches, and I am really waiting to see who I have to play.

I beat Wastedlife 2-1.

I mull to 5 into nothing for G1.
He mulls to 4 into nothing for G2.
In G3 there is something of a game, but he still draws pretty much nothing, in the end showing me a hand with triple Infernal Tutor and no way to get to hellbent or enough black mana.

Well Atwa, I accomplished my part. I'm waiting for you.

Oh man, nice job.

I wasn't even nervous about the semi-finals, I was more affraid facing Wastedlife if I did mange to reach the finals. Now there will actually be something like a final match, instead of him goldfishing whoever he faces.

Now let's hope Tacosnape and Illissius finish their match, so I can actually play again. I've been hoping all night that one of them posts the results. I did see them both online a couple of hours ago, but it seems they didn't start their match then.

I've got 7 of the 8 decks figured out. No lists, since I didn't have enough time to keep up with the format at the moment. But that info is enough to understand what you mean.

Edit: Almost said too much....

For me its only 6 decks figured out, as I don't have too much of an idea about your deck yet. And I guess its Ilissius' deck that we are both still missing.

Is there some hidden meaning in the fact that this is the Flavortext of Standstill?

I only have one copy of that card, and I've never played Standstill myself, so I really had no idea. This has got nothing to do with a Standstill deck winning this tournament however, more that I own Standstill decks :)

Guess what I'm going to do now.

Really? Cool. What episode are you at? I've covered 163 episodes in 3 weeks now. I almost watch it each minute me and my wife don't have to work. That show is really adicting. I'm going on a holyday in 2 weeks and I plan to have finished the first series (220 episodes) by then.

I'll be taking a beamer from work with me to the cotage I rented, so we can watch the second series and the 3 movies on a wall big screen.

Oh man, way to get a thread off topic.

I have all 8 decks figured out.

All I know is that I'm a longshot to beat Illissius, should be slightly favored against Atwa, and have about the equivalent chance of pandas colonizing Mars of beating Van Phanel. Uphill climb for me.

Atwa

Should be slightly favored against Atwa.

Nice at having all decks figured out. I only miss Illissius's deck, of which I have no idea.

Btw, how did you find out about my deck? I have it nowhere posted, so did one of my old opponents tell you, or did I spoil the list somewhere it wasn't supposed to be?

Not that I can really care, since I also know which strategy you are playing, I'm just curious how you found out.

Besides, according to Tao I should have a 80% disadvantage against him, of which I really didn't feel anything, since the only game I lost was because of a well timed Wasteland, and getting mana screwed after that.

Matchup predictions can be usefull sometimes, but knowing how to beat a deck is way more important in my oppinion. Add to that fact the MWS shuffler and everyone's equal.

All I know is that I [...] have about the equivalent chance of pandas colonizing Mars of beating Van Phanel.

Don't you underestimate those pandas there?

However I have to admit that I played the matchup for only one game ever (against a random MWS-opponent (that happened to be Adan, which we discovered in talking about the decks after the game)) and I mulliganed to 5 sitting on 1 land for 4 or 5 turns
I happened to still win this game, because at some point I started drawing Factories like hell and he had to break his own Standstill. Oh yeah, and the Life from the Loam which would have wrecked me because of my mulligans was in his bottom 10 cards and I killed him via decking. But I'm glad that those Quagnoths aren't yet there in your sideboard, they might actually be annoying.

Quit lying to the world, your piloting 1.5 ICBE Cron Stax. You use enchantments in Stax like crazy, for example, wtf is up with those Maindecked Leylines, Moats, In the Eyes of Chaos, and Solitary Confinement.

WTF IS YOUR WIN CONDITION? I GUESS IT'S DOVESCAPE!!!!!

Could you quit bullshitting around and instead PLAY YOUR FINAL ROUNDS?

That would be more useful.

But @bullshitting: next time if the Event's big enough to play 7 rounds, I will play Sharazad, naming the Deck "007" if you know what I mean, HAHA. (but actually it's not funny anymore, because it's a true story here in Germany, Iserlohn was the location, a guy played Sharazad.dec and went 0-0-7. The deck name was "007").

I am bullshitting while waiting until I can actually play my semi-finals. I am already waiting since Sunday afternoon until I know who my next opponent will be.

It has been 4 days now since the pairing were known. It never took that much time duing the swiss to play a match, since people people would know they'd get a loss or a draw. Now there is no time limit, and apparently there isn't that much of a need to finish a match.

Now I can understand some people have work, school or whatever, but so do the rest of us, and we all played the matches in reasonable time.

EDIT: no offense intended to Tacosnape and Illissius. I'm just tired of waiting. This tournament has been running for a couple off weeks now, and it could have easely been finished now

It is now 10pm on Wednesday.

Apologies. I have no idea how Tacosnape and I manage to keep missing each other when we're only 6-7 time zones apart. I'm here nearly the entire day except when I'm asleep, which I apparently was when he was trying to find me earlier. Naturally, now it is I who can't find him.

I'm not sure why I'm the one who gets to forfeit, but whatever. I suppose the "he who posts in thread..." rule still applies (we've been communicating in PM). Again, I'm sorry for the delay. Hopefully Taco gets back within approximately the next 18 hours...

WTF? It took you guys 2h15m only to complete the first game? That's long!

Looks like we'll have the all european finals after all.

Illissius, I'll be available when I come back from work, which will be around 19.00-19.30 western european time (I have no idea if there is a difference between hungary and the netherlands).

Hope to see you online then, I'll send you a PM when I get online.

There isn't, surprisingly enough. That's probably right around when I'd be going to sleep, though... (I usually last around 18 hours, and woke up something like 3AMish). I'll try and get a nap before then. Hopefully this will be less a test of endurance than the previous round was.

Also, try AIMing me instead of PM -- I'm not on the site 24/7. It may say I'm away, but that doesn't necessarily mean I am.

For the record, here's my list: 4-0-2 in swiss, quarterfinal loss.

4 Underground Sea
4 Tundra
3 Tropical Island
4 Flooded Strand
3 Polluted Delta
4 Mishra's Factory
2 Nantuko Monestary

4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Diabolic Edict
4 Pernicious Deed
1 Crime // Punishment

4 Force of Will
4 Counterspell
3 Stifle

4 Brainstorm
4 Standstill
3 Fact or Fiction
1 Life from the Loam

SB:
4 Meddling Mage
4 Engineered Plague
4 Blue Elemental Blast
3 Extirpate

My deck will very likely alter after this tournament to include 1 maindeck Quagnoth (-1 Diabolic Edict) and 2 SB Krosan Grip (-2 Plague). I wanted the Grips in almost every match and I didn't need the Plagues to beat Goblins (More accurately, I was sleepy and forgot to board them in.)

I would have liked Krosan Grip in all matches but Goblins, and I was so sleepy when I played Slay that I had all of my focus on not making a misplay and somehow forgot to board the Plagues in.

Nice results. I really wonder what Illissius is playing, since you guys could drag out a game for so long.

Well, I'll find out soon enough I think. I'm waiting for him to come online, after which we will start our match.

EDIT: Too bad the guy is already almost on hour late.

I take this one 2-0. Less a bad matchup than I suspected after everyone else's tales of terror ;). Good games.

edit -- And sorry for being late... again. I'm awful at waking up on cue. Always end up doing so several hours later with the alarm in my hand -- which I apparently turn off as an automatic reflex, not requiring even consciousness, and later have no recollection of having done so.

Good games indeed. Too bad he had precise the deck to hate mine.

I'll release my tournament report after the finals and make a thread on my deck tomorrow I think, depends on how tired I am from work.

Anyway: Both Van Phanel and Illissius: Good luck. May the best played (and deck) win.

And Adan, I finally totally understand what you meant with a Sick Top 8 :).

Maybe it is a testament that I should not play blue based control, but I played a very similar list to Taco's with some minor board changes for the most part, and scrubbed out in this tournament.

I lost round 1 to Train Wreck, since both games I had my hand drained and no way of stopping Haunting Echoes (despite nearly forcing game 3 with 1 card left in my library, that's how close the game was), and then proceeded to lose round 2 against UBW Landstill with Decrees in some pretty tight games (I'm sure it was my control skill here and that he outplayed me), and won round 3 against Belcher before conceding to Eldariel and dropping.

I love his list, and was only trying to tinker with some minor preference changes (LftL for instance and an extra C/P in the board, etc.) but in any case, I still got my butt kicked lol.

After seeing the list I have to agree with this.

I know that problem, but it usually happens only when I have to go to university early in the morning. Not ever when I'm about to play the greatest game in existance. I seem to know subconciously if it's important to wake up or not.

Not kidding.

So, sorry Atwa we don't get to play at last (I wouldn't mind playing you, now I've seen the list).

And to Illissius: We are also on the same time-zone, so getting together shoudln't be that hard for us, but I'm usually off playing real-life magic all Friday and Saturday. So, are you night-active? Because both today and tommorow I will only be available after midnight. Otherwise we'll have to postpone our games to sunday. Sorry about that.

We are the ones that have to say thank you Parcher. You did a great job with the whole thing.

Yeah, 2 Survivals, 1 TES, 1 BWG Black-Randomness-Ownz, 2 Landstill...And well, because i think it's not a secret anymore: 2 more Landstills in the Finals xD

4 Landstill variants Top8ed, all are different variants!!!! HOW INSANE!!!

But I got the coolest variant...and Tacosnype the Rolls-Royce-Variant with 12 Duals, lol.
Even though I always though 4color Landstill sucks, it seems that it doesn't and I'm tickled by it. i think I will try at at the next tournament, but with more combohate.

Ah, well, my Macthes were:

2-0 vs. RG Stax (Rg Suntower I guess)
2-0 vs. GeddonStax
2-0 vs. NQGw
0-2 vs. TES
2-0 vs. UW Trinket-Tool-Thingy
2-1 vs. BG Stax (that was the most beautiful match I had during the tourney, thanks Tivadar!)

But I nearly feaked out playing against all those Stax-thingys, especially because i played the build without Nevin's Disk and against Stax, Counterbalance sucks like Paris Hilton (but I think even Paris Hilton can't suck that much).

@Van Phanel: Du bist mein Held! xD Darf ich den Fire Imp dann haben? xD

Guess this says something about Stax. Tons of Landstill variants and 4 make T8, all with different builds. Tons of Stax variants and 0 make T8.

Although, BG Stax? I'd love to see a list for that.

As much as I'd like to take credit where credit isn't due, I was in fact the one running Trinkey Angel Stompy ("UW Trinket-Tool-Thingy") and not the one running BG Stax. I'd hardly call our match beautiful, the word slaughter actually comes to mind more for me here :-P.

I fear that playing the game now won't work, as I have just come home and Illissius doesn't seem to be online anymore (it's 2 am here).

I hope that we'll find a time today where we can play it.

A finals on sunday afternoon will at least be in the tradition of the big sports tournaments all over the world like the Grand Slam Tennis tournaments or the soccer worlds championships and so on.

I managed to do the waking up trick again, but still caught Van Phanel while he was online. And so:

Congratulations to Van Phanel, winner of Source Tournament VIII!

Pretty interesting games. I'll have to write a report. Here's what I can remember, which is probably most of it:

Game one: He lays Factory and Standstill. I draw a Factory of my own. I might've drawn a Maze which he Wasted; not sure. Anyways, he draws a second Factory, and I have to trade mine with the first. Stuff happens. I decide I'll have to break the Standstill, so I play a Brainstorm during his end step. I draw an arrow pointing at his Standstill, and just as I do, he sacrifices it. MWS crashes on both ends. We frown. Due to the double crash, we couldn't take note of the game state to recreate it, so we had no real choice but to play anew.

Game one: I play a Chalice for one and a Shackles to bait out counters (aiming for Intuition), but they resolve. I think we both have Factories. He Standstills, which I raise an eyebrow at, and allow. I get two Mazes, and proceed to beat him down with my Factory, thanks to the threat of Shackles. Meanwhile, he starts using Eternal Dragon. He eventually decides to break his own Standstill. He gets Crucible and Wastes my only Tropical, and hardcasts Eternal Dragon. I have to Intuition for fetchlands to have green mana, and play Deed the next turn, and then pop his Crucible the one after. He Decrees for a ton at end of turn, and that's game. I'm pretty sure I must have misplayed somewhere, because losing after your opponent breaks his own Standstill is bad times.

Game two: I side in Duress and Goyfs. He begins by Wasting a Sea, and then Extirpating them, stranding a Duress in my hand, and causing me to frown. I proceed to play double Goyfs and beat his head in, causing him to frown.

Game three: I'm a giant, giant fucking idiot. He plays a turn one fetchland. So do I. I opt not to Duress him yet, as that can wait until later, after all. He sacs his fetchland, and like the brilliant moron I am, I crack mine in response to avoid Stifle. He proceeds to again Wasteland my Sea and then Extirpate them, like I deserve, stranding the Duress I chose not to nab his Extirpate with. God. Fucking. Damnit. I then play a Chalice for one. I'm not sure I could have achieved such a tremendous result with any other sequence of plays. I have a Loam and a Factory, so for lack of better options, I try going for the beatdown plan and Intuition for the other three Factories. I draw a bunch of countermagic, but have to throw some of it to my Forces to stop both of his Explosives for 0 (and some countermagic of his own). He follows up with Crucible, exactly as I expected, but there wasn't much I could do. (If I had been less aggressive with my Factories I might have been able to keep mana open to hardcast a Counterspell rather than having to pitch it to Force; not sure). I do have Loam, and hence, hope. At some point he Decrees at end of turn for two tokens. We go for a few turns where I attack with two Factories and play a third, he Wastes one, and I pump the other to get in for 3, while he swings back for two with his Soldiers. Unfortunately, I have a Coliseum which I occasionally have to tap when Loaming. We get to the point where he is at 4, I'm at 3, it's my turn, and I have to Loam if I want more Factories. If I do, Coliseum brings me to 2 life and I can't swing in without him swinging back for the win. I end up sacrificing the Coliseum instead, hoping for Goyfs (which I hadn't seen any of from half my library) but drawing not very much at all. I Loam it back and sacrifice it again, drawing three Goyfs in as many cards this time (but without mana to play one). Unfortunately for me, Van Phanel sees the right play, which was to topdeck Mishra's Factory and then play it for the third blocker/attacker (I only have mana for two Goyfs). I fail to respond by topdecking my Wasteland, and that's that. (It turns out he was holding two Brainstorms, a Stifle, and an Extirpate, and not any tricks like I was expecting. Chalice for one is still good.)

Here's what I played, roughly based on Bardo's Landstill:

4 Brainstorm
4 Standstill
3 Intuition
1 Life from the Loam

4 Force of Will
4 Counterspell
3 Spell Snare
3 Chalice of the Void

4 Pernicious Deed
2 Engineered Explosives
2 Vedalken Shackles
2 Maze of Ith

4 Mishra's Factory
1 Wasteland
1 Academy Ruins
1 Cephalid Coliseum
4 Polluted Delta
4 Flooded Strand
4 Tropical Island
4 Underground Sea
1 Island

SB: 4 Tarmogoyf
SB: 4 Duress
SB: 4 Leyline of the Void
SB: 1 Tormod's Crypt
SB: 1 Chalice of the Void
SB: 1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

Looking back, I'd swap the Wasteland for a Dust Bowl, which is better when you have Loam rather than Crucible, and the third Intuition for something useful (I always Brainstormed it back early on). Some way to win besides Factory beats or decking with Academy would also be helpful (Gigapede? Grave-Shell Scarab?), but I hate drawing those before the late game. Spell Snares didn't suck but weren't amazing either, partly because I never really drew them early, but they might be better off as countermagic of a different sort. The Leylines in the sideboard were completely useless: I expected plenty of Ichorid and such, but faced none. Asides from these, the deck was crushingly awesome. Chalice and Maze in particular were MVPs all tournament. I didn't have a single bad matchup until the finals, and even there I thought I was slightly favored going in. (Crucible can be countered or destroyed; Life from the Loam can't be. This, of course, assumes that the pilot isn't a giant donkey.)

And to answer the question you're about to ask, yes, I'm pretty sure this does get annihilated by Goblins. The essence of my metagaming was that no one played that online when it was the best deck; why would they start now? (See also: 0 Plagues in the board). It payed off.

Much thanks to Parcher for running this tournament. It was awesome.

As we played the games from 3 am to 5.30 am and then proceeded in talking about the games for another 30 minutes or so, I needed some sleep first before I could write something here.

I don't have much to add here to the short report Illissius wrote about our games except that I didn't think there were misplays involved (except my playing standstill with shackles in play). I just got more lucky. In game 2 I actually had the choice of wasting + Extirpating Tropical or Underground Sea and I chose to go for the U-Seas, because I was fearing Extirpates from his side. When I then saw the two Tarmogoyfs in hand, the thought occured that going for Tropical might have been better. And for game 3, that was some hell of a game. Usually you don't expect a damage race to be won by 2 soldier-tokens against multiple factories, but that Coliseum really helped me dealing those 3 or 4 damage that were exactly enough for me to win it (and the Crucible + Waste didn't hurt either)

To sum it up: great games, Illissius, they were worth being the Finals.

This is the deck I played:

4 Tundra
2 Underground Sea
1 Scrubland
4 Flooded Strand
1 Polluted Delta
2 Island
2 Plains
4 Mishra's Factory
3 Wasteland

1 Eternal Dragon

2 Crucible of Worlds

2 Decree of Justice

4 Brainstorm
4 Standstill
2 Fact or Fiction

4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Engineered Explosives
3 Wrath of God

3 Stifle
4 Counterspell
4 Force of Will

1 Pulse of the Fields

SB:
4 Engineered Plague
4 Meddling Mage
3 Extirpate
2 Dismantling Blow
2 Circle of Protection: Red

A very short report of my tournament is about to follow in the next few days.

Finally I want to thank different people:

a) All the people I played, good games guys.
b) Tao who drew against me. I wouldn't have liked that match at all, but that way we didn't have to throw somebody from the same country out of contention for Top8
c) Parcher for running the whole thing. (I still owe you a match, Parcher)
d) Last but not least: Credits for my decklist go to Marius Hausmann. He is experienced with many different versions of U-W-Landstill, playing the deck he will Top8 nearly always and he created this version mainly to fight Life from the Loam postboard and to be able to win against 8+ Goblins on turn 1. I only changed 2 cards from his list (Delta #2 -> Plains #2 and Dragon #2 -> Stifle #3) and even those only due to personal preference.

Finally I want to quote two big things:

"Stifling a Fetchland is like if Time Walk and Stone Rain had sex ... and Lava Dart watched."

"Take your time" (Flavortext of Standstill and I live by this in reallife too. Being to hasty is never good)

Not to make you want to jump out a window or anything Illissius, but EE for 0 doesn't kill Manlands.

Van Phanel
08-05-2007, 04:18 PM
Sure. The reason for countering the Explosives was the fact that there was a Chalice 1 in play. Which turned out as the correct play, because that Chalice prevented me from playing Spells for the rest of the game. I had Brainstorm, 2 Stifle and Extirpate still in hand in the end.

Congratulations to Van Phanel, winner of Source Tournament VIII!!!!!!

Thanks to all who participated. While I had more sign-ups than usual, I had about the same dropouts as usual so I have to consider it a success.

@Van Phanel: I am on the American East Coast, so I'm guessing that's GMT -4. PM me with your name and address so I can get your cards out, and times when you can play so I can at least get one match in. From the last two times with Tao, it takes around two weeks to get them to Germany. What's up with the Germans winning all these anyway?

Just to be fair, here is the list I'm playing:

4 Bayou
4 Tropical Island
2 Forest
5 Island
3 Polluted Delta
3 Wooded Foothills

4 Aluren

3 Cabal Therapy
3 Intuition
4 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
2 Chain of Vapor

4 Wall of Roots
3 Wall of Blossoms
3 Cavern Harpy
4 Raven Familiar
1 Spike Feeder
2 Eternal Witness
2 Man-O'-War

1 Cabal Therapy
3 Duress
3 Disrupt
1 Spike Feeder
3 Pernicious Deed
1 Viridian Zealot
3 Hydroblast

Not a good SB against yours, but at least it's fair. Obviously I expected Combo and Stax.:frown:

Ok this is a somewhat long overdue bump, but my job is a little hectic at the moment (and pretty long hours).

Anyways, if Van Phanel is interested in my modded Dark Ritual it's his. He can defer to 2nd place if he doesn't want it, can defer to 3rd, can defer to 4th etc.

Let me know who wants it so I can mail it out.

EDIT:

I just ask that if you claim it, that you're actually interested in it.

EDIT 2:

Whoever does end up claiming it, please e-mail so I can't forget to get the card to you.

Van Phanel

Well, I would be interested in it but after all I already got my fair share of prices (the letter arrived on Saturday) and I have to admit that I don't like winner-takes-it-all tournaments very much as especially inside the Top8 usually very much luck is involved.

So, Illissius if you want it, take it.

Heh. I was actually sort of relieved that I didn't win, because I have next to no use for real life cards (unless someone wants to give me like an entire deck), and ebaying them would feel crappy. So if Van Phanel passes on them, I'll also pass them on to the next taker. Do I get to choose my successor, or does 3rd place get it (wastedlife I believe)?

That would be Wastedlife indeed, since he got to claim a game in the Top 8, where I simply got slaughtered.

If Wastedlide doesn't want it (which I doubt, since the guy gets erections from playing dark ritual), I'd be interested as the 4th place.
