View Full Version : [Card Discussion] The Bare Necessities

Every magic player at some point in their career has spent time searching through common boxes. Why do we spend hours doing this? Partially because we are bored, partially because we like it, and partially because we need to. Personally I hate paying some obscene amount for a common the day of the tournament when I could have found them earlier for a fraction of the price. That is why I carry one set of practically every card I could need. But what cards exactly do I need? Well I decided to make a list of the essential commons you might need for any particular deck in legacy.

Here are the Criteria I used to determine what should and shouldn’t make the list:

It has to be a common from the original set it was printed in.
There cannot be a strictly better version in print; common, uncommon, or rare.
This excludes all cards where duplicate effects can be a benefit (Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning for instance)
Edit: It has to be playable in Legacy (this is where i need help discussing what is actually playable)I wanted to post this for a couple of reasons:

Because it will improve mental magic skill.
Because it might remind everyone of cards they forgot about when building decks.
Because it will generate discussion about each card's quality and relevance
Because it will help those individuals just getting started in legacy. Here they are, starting with Blue:

* -- Denotes that card exists as an Uncommon or Rare in other sets

I think a lot of these cards are unnecessary, but a list like this could be interesting if compared to a list from a different format.

That's a fantastic idea for a thread. Such a list would be a great help to newer players, a lot of people who are still working on their collection, and even just to compare legacy to other formats. It can even be useful for assessing the kind of impact cards from newer sets will have. But to get a complete list together, I think you're going to need input from lots of people.

A couple of the cards you listed are close to unplayable in the format IMO. I can't think of any deck that would ever want to play Wood Elves or Sunlance. If you want a card to supplement StP in white, I would go with Temporal Isolation. Some other cards that likely belong on your list are Might of Old Krosa and Mire Boa.

The list is off to a great start though.

I did the same thing, collect a playset of all the commons and uncommons and cheaper rares I thought were playable in the format.

Suddenly, you can quickly build any deck that you want to.

So when I go back home in a few weeks, I will go through my collection and try to add to your list.

Can't wait to see your uncommons list. Most uncommons are also very affordable and very worthwhile getting a playset of.

I agree with you for the most part. What I did was search for commons of one color at a time and go down the list alphabetically. I tried to stick as closely to the criteria as possible.

Your right though when you say that some of the cards are unneccessary. Oh and even though I checked the list I still forgot one or two >_< sigh.....

Reverent Silence is one...

Oh...and I'll have it updated with lands/Artifacts/multicolor soon.

SCG used to offer a collection of "Most Useful Extended Commons" or something as a single sale. Don't know if it's still available, though.

This thread is also a great idea for people like me who don't play very much and would like to thin down their commons/uncommons, but not dump cards that might have some use. I have scoured many forums looking at lists, but most focus on Standard or Vintage/Extended - I would love a "Legacy-centric" list. Thank you for the effort and please continue

I skimmed the list a bit, and saw a few problems I thought I'd mention:

1) Sinkhole on a list of commons? I don't care if it is a common, it goes for > $20: it shouldn't be on the list.

2) Ditto, although less so, for Flying Men. And he's Rare now (not that that means much... Funeral Charm is rare now!) Jungle Lion is also pretty difficult to find, although I suppose he can stay on the list.

3) Glittering Lynx, Reprisal, Night Soil, Overload, Orcish Lumberjack, Mindstab Thrull... I've honestly never see a single one of any of these in a decklist. Just saying.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head to add is Emerald Charm. If Simplify makes the list, this totally does as well. Then add lands and artifacts. The cycling lands make the list. Chromatic Sphere (bumped down to common) should make the list, as should Chromatic Star (bumped up to uncommon).

Its a work in progress. As I said I wanted to make sure to list as many as possible the first time around, that way I can get a general concensus of what the players think are essential. There were many cards that I wanted to add....like Midnight Charm but they are not quite good enough. I personally think there are some cards like Wood Elves and Spore Frog that could easily go off. The thing is, those cards have very unique effects that can't be found anywhere else in magic. The same goes for cards like Nightsoil as bad as it may seem it would straight up destroy some decks such as Ichorid and Breakfast. Cards like that should still be included. And btw don't you think Reprisal would be very good in this format right now? I completely forgot that card was a common. It kills Tarmogoyf and all kinds of nasties out there. Its a good option for individuals just getting into the format.

Yeah, I agree that a list on price would be more beneficial. I basically only have decks and not much of a collection because I tend to just buy decks and sell all the stuff not in them, to save cash. But I have always wanted to get started and buy all the legacy playable stuff that is under $5. But the list is a great starting place for me.

Mulch, Peek, Myr Enforcer, Dragon's Breath, Tranquil Domain, Werebear, and Seal of Primordium should make the list for sure. Many of the others being suggested are either strictly worse then cards already mentioned, are extremely debatable, or are not playable.

To answer some questions as to why I originally listed some very questionable cards. (wirewood herald, Wood Elves, Sunlance, etc)

They all have very unique effects that cannot be found elsewhere in magic. Sunlance falls under the third catagory of being useful in addiction to cards like STP. Although that is highly debatable.

Sandstorm, Pyrite Spellbomb, the Kobolds, Shield Sphere, and the Urzatron lands are possibilites. Plz discuss.

It tells me that White's good cards are not common. If I had made this list, Goblin War Strike, Brightstone Ritual, Fierce Empath, Flying Men, Tolarian Winds, Mindstab Thrull, etc would not have been on it. Honestly now, Reverent Silence? Invigorate? These are niche cards in a single deck that is hardly taking over the format. How does that make them essential?

When it comes to power, yes these cards are on the low end of the totum pole. However, they still meet the criteria. Each one has a unique effect that cannot be found anywhere else in MTG. I wanted to make a list that was not subjective. If I tried to make a list based on # of cards played (in tournament) or power level, many playable cards would not be included on the list. That would make it alot less usefull.

Having a broad set of commons is great because it allows for cards to become more relevant over time. This is done though testing mostly, but how would you know to test a card if you could not remember it existed? The list is much more useful for the newer players, and the veteran's (for testing purposes) the way it is. No one in legacy really needs to be told that brainstorm is good. A list that included only the legacy (tournament) staples would have been a waste.

In that case, please include Equinox, Abu Jafar, Remove Enchantments, Merchant Ship, Cyclopean Mummy, Camel, Soldier of Fortune, Delif's Cone, Riptide, etc. Those cards are all quite unique and quite useless. It's all subjective.

They have to also qualify as playable in Legacy. I'm fairly sure that was a given. It was my hope that I could assemble a list of cards that would present all the playable options and all of the usefull mechanics at the same time. Simplify might be worse than Emerald Charm, however it cannot be fetched with Burning Wish which is relevant in Legacy. If there are specific cards where similar cases cannot be made then I agree they should be removed. Can you make more specific selections? Which cards exactly do you think should come off the list and why? This would be very useful since my goal is to eventually create the most refined list possible for reference to the legacy community.

Sandstorm, Pyrite Spellbomb, the Kobolds, Shield Sphere, and the Urzatron lands are possibilites. Plz discuss.

I commend you for your initiative.

But the point of the thread should be to make a list of cheap cards to get that newer players should invest in as those are the cards that they have a home in competitive decks. That's the list that actually serves a purpose, that actually helps new players out.

It makes no sense to include cards like Sinkhole that are by no means cheap to get while leaving out cards like Smallpox just because it's not a common inspite of being a .25 cent card to get.

It makes no sense to leave out cards like Spark Elemental and Rift Bolt because they are strictly inferior to Lightning Bolt. You want to play as many such effects as possible. One card being inferior to another is not enough justification to leave it out. If the card sees play in a reasonable percentage of legacy decks (burn makes up a reasonble percentage of the legacy field), it absolutely belongs on the list.

And it makes no sense to make newer players buy crap cards like Sunlance and Wood Elves that no decent deck would ever play. These cards are not playable. They are either over costed or far too limited to see any play. Find me any list that ever top 8ed at a reasonable sized tourney that played these cards if you want to prove me wrong. By the way, none of these cards have unique effects either. Lightning Bolt is a far better card than Sunlance with an identical effect on creatures, Weather Wayfarer is a far better card than Wood Elves with a near identical effect. If you want to stay within green, Land Grant, Sakura Tribe Elder. The difference is, my examples are actually decent enough to actually belong on this list.

Exactly how is Wood Elves either more playable, or more unique than Sakura Tribe Elder by the way? I'm not saying STE belongs on the list. The title of the thread is "The Bare Neccesities" and owning STE is not a neccesity to play Legacy by any stretch of the imagination. But it certainly belongs on the list far before Wood Elves ever will.

Wood Elves et. al are not unique cards. You want unique cards... try cards like Goblin Game, Pain's Reward etc. Now those are unique effects. My point is, wasting money to collect overcosted cards because they have a unique effect is something that veteran players do, not what players new to the game need to be doing.

The whole idea of making newer players buy crap cards because they are supposedly unique is a bad one. There are tons and tons of crappy cards with unique effects. You could make a list five times as long as your current list just with such cards. You want to tell new players to spend money to buy them all them too?

Please revise your criteria to include all and only the playable cards that are cheap to get. It's easy enough to do. Just look through the decks that either win tournaments, or see a lot of play, and include any card from them that you can get a playset of for under $5. That's a much more handy list.

Then this list will serve a very valuable function to new players entering legacy, and even players just looking to expand their legacy library.

Once again, great idea for a thread though. I just think it's criteria has to be tweaked for the list to serve any purpose.

Quick Summary: Make sure the title of your thread jives with the list you are attempting. Wood Elves and Sunlance are not neccesities for everyone to own. I can't come up with a single deck that would ever want to run them.

Happy Gilmore
08-30-2007, 11:29 PM
Wood elves can put dual lands into play directly, untapped. Thats why it is on the list. It was a component of ATS, but obviously it is out dated. The idea is to make a list without crappy cards. So....give me some specifics. What should come off the list? If it truely has no use in current Legacy OR has no chance of getting better then it should come off the list.

Re: Sinkhole etc.
This is a wish list, show me someone who actually has all of these cards. It has taken me a long time to build up a tool box with only about 90% of the cards mentioned so far. My goal is to make it useful for both new and veteran players player. I didn't want to leave anything important out. When you search commons it shows up. I'm not saying new players would miss sinkhole in an initial search, but it is possible.

Cards being discussed to be taken out:
Wood Elves
Rewind
Mindstab Thrull
Skittering Horror
Skittering Skirge
Invigorate
hmm...any more specifics?

Cards TBD:
Sandstorm, Spark Elemental, Child of Korlis, Icatian Javileneer, Pyrite Spellbomb, the Kobolds, Shield Sphere, the Urzatron lands, and I guess Kami of Ancient Law would be ok. Although I don't see why you would want to play a spirit over a Unicorn.

Oh, and Crypt was originally an uncommon.

SpatulaOfTheAges
08-30-2007, 11:41 PM
He's right Dominic. The idea(so I've been led to believe) was to have a list of cards that players should consider when sifting through a common box. Sinkhole, unless you have some divine power looking out for you, isn't going to be found in a common box.

If it's just a list of cards that happen to have the rarity "common" it's a useless curiousity. I would think you're prefer it to be a useful reference.

Also, Counterspell was also, originally, an uncommon. That doesn't change the fact that I could buy a bucket full by mowing 1 lawn.

Happy Gilmore
08-31-2007, 12:49 PM
The common box thing was one purpose, and some of the higher valued cards will be found in common boxes (if your lucky). But that is not the main purpose. I understand the value of the cards is important. So where would you place sinkhole, and Chain Lightning? In the uncommon list? In the rare list? Thats too subjective, so I decided to keep them on the list. Maybe my Criteria is too broad?

Re: Counterspell

I forgot it was originally an uncommon >_<. That kind of throws a wrench in the system. A list of uncommons is comming soon so I'll try to integrate as best I can. And yes, Sea Drake will be on the list. Value should not change the facts. If some random common from Portal Three Kingdoms becomes part of some broken combo and hits the $20-$30 mark that doesn't elevate its status. Should I not include Imperial Recuriter on the list because it is upwards of $70? Reset is an uncommon too. All of these cards were cheeper to begin with, does that mean they were uncommons and now are not due to value?

I think everyone is getting caught up in the "new players buy cheep cards" concept. These "new players" may be veterans in other formats with lots of money. A common is a common, an uncommon is an uncommon (excluding sets like Alliances with different levels of uncommons).

I'm going to go back and put an * next to the commons that are uncommons in other sets. Counterspell will be removed for the time being. The uncommons will have the same system but the * will indicate it was originally an uncommon, changed to a common or rare in later sets.

Clark Kant

I just haven't seen a single reason offered up as to why having a list of all legacy playable commons (including stuff like Sinkhole), and excluding anything that was an uncommon (even the .05 cent uncommons) would be more useful than a list of all the legacy playable cards that are cheap to buy. If you really want, you could just put a C, U, or R, next to all the cards in the latter list so that people can just look at the commons.

The latter list would be a quick guide to let people fill up their collections with legacy playable cards on the cheap. The formet list leaves off tons of legacy playable uncommons and even rares, that are far cheaper to get than even commons like Rancor and Priest of Titania.

Yes, if the price of some card skyrockets for some reason, it would come off the list. I don't see what the big deal is, such spikes only occur once in a blue moon if that, and almost all such spikes in the past are a direct result of Portal being made legacy legal. What else is there left to make legacy legal? Unglued?

Hell, why not just make a list of all legacy playable cards. But put any cards that cost more than $1.50 each (according to Magic Traders) in one pile, and all cards that cost less, in another pile.
