With the spoilage of Platinum emporion

Platinum Emperion 8
Artifact Creature - Golem
Your life total can't change.
8/8

my mind has been consumed with making a deck that abuses the Platinum creatures, in the fact that the deck is more concerned with not losing than locking the opponent out. Yes i know not the all around best strategy, but a fun one, both for you and your opponent (assuming you have a soul). Anyway I was brainstorming the best ways to get the big boy up there and his more feminine cousin Plat Angel out and came up with Goblin welder. Now welder isn't wide spread in legacy because its so vulnerable. I can't change that fact so i have to ensure that i can get out my giants without it; so i turn to metalworker.

Shit my deck relies on the survival of two shroud less creatures, in order to get out other shroud less win-cons...unfortunate but i wrote this much god damn it so i can keep going.

Anyway here's the deck i came up sans side board (i actually have to get the cards and play test them before i can hope to understand all the weak points i need to plan for, i.e just play another deck) , and ill explain my card choices as i make them

Platinum Stacks

Basically colorless deck, best land acceleration there is:
4 Ancient tomb
4 City of traitors

Red Mana Sources for Goblin Welder, 4 artifact lands for metal worker and basics against wasteland;
4 Great Furnace
4 Mountain

lands that beat;
4 Mishra's Factory
2 Muta Vault

The platinum warriors, the stars of the deck;
4 Platinum Angel
3 Platinum Emporion

The way to get my platinum beasts out. Also the welder can keep interchanging them so they can avoid removal (i.e in response to STP sac Emporion get Angel)
4 Goblin Welder
4 Metal Worker

Some usual stack distruption (again more fun with the welder);

3 Lodestone Golem
3 Trinisphere
3 Chalice of the void
3 Tangle Wire

More mana acceleration plus the mox's provide more red for the welder. I also think this deck runs enough artifacts to warrant the opals;
4 Grim Monolith
2 Mox opal
2 Mox diamond

Weird shit;
3 Lightning greaves - This way i can give my welder shroud long enough for him to get a platinum into play and then give that plat shroud making it harder for me to lose the game.

P.S.

If room can be found for ensnaring bridge, i think it would make a fine addition to the deck.
------------

So basically that is the deck, the strategy is simple; play must remove/counters over and over again. As bad as the plats are, they have to be answered unlike other fatties which can be avoided, these have to be accounted for, same goes for welder and for some decks chalice/lodestone/tangle wire/ etc.

I can't really post anymore, this deck is just a fevered dream atm, and until i actually build it and play with it it will remain. But till then in theory please tell me what you think. I'm pretty sure with left field decks like these its perfectly acceptable to tell me how much it sucks and STFU .

Anyway thanks any comments are appreciated.

Ironclaw Myr
Plague Stinger
Ichor Rats
Needle Specter
Fetchlands
Forest
Swamp

Since the deck is about 1/4 pump spells, and 1/4 creatures, it should have the material necessary for a t3 poison finish most of the time. It can plausibly punch through with damage as well, although that's a little slower. The discard is primarily there to protect against removal.

I should look at Berserk,Rouse,Mind Swords,Snuff Out, Unmask, Bounty of the Hunt, and any other infect cards that come out...

Now and with the release of scars of mirrodin and so I´m trying to create it again because i think this deck is a good one.

The new list is not totally completed but there are somke cards I´m going to include here. The explanations are the following:

Swarmyard: THe core of the deck. This land makes you can benefit form all your dudes having nice effects from them.

Yavimaya hollow: The fifth swarmyard to abuse from your guys.

Xantid Swarm: The protection of the deck. An evasive critter that prevent opponent from playing bad things.

BroodHatch Nantuko: An awesome token generator. Beat with tarmo, nantuko block, regenerates with yard and you have 5 free tokens

Deadly Recluse: An awesome blocker, has reah, kills anything (because deadtouch) and survives to do it again.

Throat Slitter : A creature removal with legs that can beat, regerates with swarmyard and has the surprise effect.

Skullsnatcher : The antigrave effect. Beats, regenerates and empty the opponent´s grave

Beastmaster Ascension: The finisher. it can be activated in a single turn making your critters into monsters

Garruk WildSpeaker: use swarmyard two times and an overrun in one card.

Ichor Rats: the new infect mechainic is awesome. regenerates with swarmyard and puts poison.

Crypt Rats: A cleaner of the table that combo with BroodHatch Nantuko. These rats can make direct damage, clean the table and put lot of dudes into play.

Plague Stinger: the same as above but evasibe. incredible.

I think the list now could be something like:

2 Bayou
4 Swarmyard
1 pendelhaven
1 yavimaya´s Hollow
4 Verdant catacombs
5 Swamp
2 Forest" onclick="AutoCard('Forest'); return false;" title="Forest">Forest
2 Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoths

4 Xantid Swarm
4 Aether vial
4 BroodHatch Nantuko
4 Deadly Recluse
4 Beastmaster Ascension
4 Ichor Rats
4 Plague Stinger
4 Crypt Rats
2 Garruk WildSpeaker
3 Skullsnatcher
3 throat Slitter
2 Crop Rotation

There are another interesting dudes like Chameleon Colossus that I think can fit in the deck but now this is the list I´m testing.

With this cards I think you can do an interesting deck. What do you think??

1.Introduction

After Worldwake was realesed I instantly fell in love with a blue enchantment that seemed should have nice sinergy with Sensei’ s divining top, so I tell to myself why not trying to embed into a CB-Top Shell, this enchamentment was Quest for Ula’ s Temple (for reference: http://www.magiccards.info/query?q=f...v=card&s=cname), after testing some lists without any success (basicaly for being too slow and too inconsistant, with an awful mana curve), I decide it to leave it alone and keep playing my storm lists. Months later the GP Columbus happened and I found a decklist that attract me in some or other way, this list was the one Stephen Menendian played (for reference: http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/l...in_Legacy.html , but remember is a Premium article), so I can definitely say that this list is heavily influenced and motivated by his.

2. Motivation

As I said before the motivation to make this list was seeing Menendian’ s GP list, but then why not just copy it and avoid the effort? Well there are also some point that I strongly dislike from that list. First of all is the huge amount of dead cards that it is playing, specially those 4x Emrakul, Torn of Aeons, they are not only dead cards if you draw them without the Show and Tell but also they are n ultra weird 15 CC which hardly sinergyzes with the Counterbalance, also the Burning wish were very attracting but they seem too slow for the answers they want to fetch (board sweepers and the kind...). With all thisin mind , I satreted to work and this is the result

3.Decklist

“Living Top v1.1"

Maindeck 60

4x Tarmogoyf
3x Trinket Mage

4x Counterbalance

4x Sensei’ s Divining Top
1x Engineered Explosives

2x Jace, the Mind Sculptor

4x Force of Will
3x Daze
4x Brainstorm
3x Firespout

3x Show and Tell
4x Living Wish

3x Volcanic Island
3x Tropical Island
2x Tundra
3x Island
1x Forest
4x Misty Rainforest
1x Flooded Strand
1x Polluted Delta
1x Scaldign Tarn
1x Wooded Foothills
1x Academy Ruins

Sideboard 15

2x Krosan Grip
2x Red Elemental Blast
1x Pyroblast
2x Tormod’ s Crypt
1x Pithing Needle
1x Faerie Macabre
1x Emrakul Torn of Aeons
1x Peacemaker
1x Llawan, Cephalid Empress
1x Ethersworn Canonist
1x Karakas
1x Maze of Ith

4. Gameplan

“Living Top” is but a control deck, so your main goal is to stablish a favorable board position to win the game, nevertheless you should have in mind that with a good curve there is the possibility to combo your opponent out by the beginning of the fourth turn (2nd turn living wish  Emrakul, 3rd turn Show & Tell  Emrakul, 4th turn  swing for the win), but this is an ideal situation that hardly happens. This means that you will normally try to set the CB-Top softlock, play some Tarmogoyf for early defense, swap table with Firespout and seal the deal with Jace, the mind sculptor, after that, if the game isn’ tsteal won go for Emrakul and finish your opponent.

5. Card Choices

There are some auto-includes, that really doesn’ t need further explanation:

-Counterbalance, Sensei`s divining top, Force of Will, Brainstorm, tarmogoyf.

For the rest of the deck we have:

-Trinket mage: this guy helps in many ways, first being a 3 CC is important for CC builds, since it helps dealing with those post board Krosan grips, he is also a 2/2 body that grants card advantage (helping you to set the softlock or fetching for engineered explosives or pithing needle).

-Daze: I thought of counterspell, spell sanre and spell pierce too, but daze finally made the cut for being free and havinf the important role of keeping you alive in the early stage of the game and protecting the softlock, it can also be crucial for a third turn Show and Tell plan.

-Jace, the Mind Sculptor: well he is card advantage, spot removal and win condition all in one, if you can land him on a wining position the game will be almost done, it has really good sinergy with CB-Top.

-Firespout: one of the big reasons of the red splah. Firespout is huge at his role of protecting Jace and defeating huge tribal hordes, losing Trinket mage to it is not really relevant since when you need Firespout is in the matches where the Mage dies due to chump blocking.

-Show and tell: I’ m not really happy with this card, for being a dead card for the most part of the game, but being blue and 3CC make it worth for the meantime.

-Living wish: Menendian’ s list packed burning wish instead of this, but I feel living wish being superior in this build, not only for making a more decent mana curve but also because it grants a good toolbox of creatures, and some lands, that can be easily protected with Counterbalance and give you the advantage.

-Engineered Explosives: I had hard time deciding wheter to keep it maindeck or changing it for the Pithing needle, but Engineered Explosives can most of times do what the needle does and it ‘ s also more versatile in pre-board terms, it is also the reason why I’ m playing the Academy Ruins. Remember that is your only maindeck proactive answer to AEther Vial.

6. The sideboard:

First of all let’s analyze the Living Wish Targets:

-Emrakul Torn of Aeons: a win condition, this is just what he is, he is the greatest in terms of sealing deals.

-Faerie Macabre: very good weapon against reanimator and survival builds, it can also be useful against rock or landstill, and sometimes against storm (this is corner case just because you won’t have time to tutor for her, since canonist will be better target, and they normally won’ t use the IGG plan against you)

-Peacemaker: along with Counterbalance + Top this guy can give you enough turns to finish the game with jace, he is specially good agains Merfolks, and quite weak against goblins, though he will buy some turns until they can find an Incinerator.

-Llawan, Cephalid Empress: the merfolk nightmare, once she hits the table the game is over (specially if the Vials are under control. She has other uses against Bant or faeries, but is not as good as is in the merfolk match up.

-Ethersworn Canonist: the storm deck terror, in addition with CB+Top this match should be quite easy to handle. Though never understimate Storm decks power you have very few relevant cards in main deck for the first turns, and REB/Pyroblast is not that great agains them (specially bad against T.E.S.)

-Karakas: it may be an extra land drop if needed, though this is not its main purppose. It helps with Iona and Emrakul, also if needed can keep Vendilion Clique Under control.

-Maze of Ith: great against aggro control deck that play monsters.

And the "regular" board:

-Krosan Grip: all around tool, helps in mirror matches, against counterbalance, landstill, …

-Red Elemental Blast / Pyroblast: extra countermagic if needed in the control match-up. They are also Spot removal against merfolks.

-Tormod’ s Crypt: it can be fetched with Trinket mage and recurred with academy ruins (this is why I chose it instead of Relic of Progenitus, it also doesn’ t screw your Goyfs that much).

-Pithing Needle: great against Aether Vial, Survival of the Fittest, Pernicious Deed, Wasteland, and opponent’s Planeswalkers.

7.Testing so far

By now I’ ve been only able to test it through Magic Workstation and the results were excellent, though I know it’s soon enough to take any conclusions, this is what happened:

Note: Deck Type: Games Won; Games Lost.

-Zoo: 2; 1.
-U Tempo (faeries, canadian,…): 5; 2.
-Storm builds (T.E.S., ANT): 2; 0.
-Goblins: 5; 2.
-Burn: 2; 0.
-Surivval Madness: 3; 1.
-Survival Rock: 2; 1.
-Counterbalance: 3; 0.
-Eva green: 1; 1.
-New Horizons: 2; 1.
Which makes a wining average of: 74.4186 %, so far.
I’ll keep this updated while after more testings, and if you like it and try it, I’ ll be glad to hear the reports.

ok, since the day it came out, i've been in love with Time reversal. This card basically does what Timetwister does in Vintage: draws you 7 fresh cards and might cause gigantic card loss for opponent.

So, i thought that the only deck wich could abuse this card would be some sort of Cab-Jace variant, but with a bit more mana ramp to cast it very early in the game (turn 2-3 time reversal with empty hand is not so common but happened some times) that's why i put 4x grim monoliths and voltaic keys. This ramp can cause you to accidentally do 10 mana on turn 3-4, and so i decided to put an alt win con in the form of kozilek.
Then, as CabJace shell suggests, i added some heavy control pieces like 4x Firespout (though Cab plays 3 i feel more confortable with full playset) and 4x engineered explosives. The format is really aggrocontrol-ish, so have sure answers against turn one vial, turn one lackey is a nice thing.

new list, thanks for the inputs.

There are a couple things I wish I could have done, such as fit a vengevine win in in place of the iona win, and I would have liked to up the creature count with stone forged mystics+jittes.

This can put a progenitus down on turn 4 quite regularly, and will usually do it's survival shenanigans around the same time should it chose to go that route.
The back up plan is tarmogoyf, and the swords help. goyf also pitches to survival and sacs to natural order.
The counterbalance match is decent with the natural orders in the main deck. And the deck laughs at grave yard hate which is something most survival lists have problems with.

The deck is pretty consistent, although slightly lacking in the tempo department.

Some things I would like to sort out are;
What survival target to run.(emrakul/Iona/blazing archon)
Should swords be main deck.
Make the tempo strategy stronger.
Up the creature count if possible.
And any ideas you might have.

Elves produce green mana (news flash), and that makes them very effective at chain-surviving Vengevines or dropping NOProg early and consistently. The lord-aggro + hardcast Vengevine backup plan isn't terrible either.

The land-count is high only because my testing pushed me to do so. I never thought an elf deck should play so many lands, but it has put up better results for me. ESG merits testing.

When it comes to Legacy, innovation is a lot cheaper than netdecking.
So here's the list I'll be playing as my first tourney-deck. I was hoping that I could play it today in Amsterdam, but couldn't get a hold of all the cards needed. So unfortunately it'll remain an unproven list for now, though it's got a hawt MWS record.
Anyone who wants to tinker and fiddle with it, be my guest. Probably won't see play soon otherwise.

WelderZoa is a very fast aggro deck. It is highly vulnerable to 1-mana creature removal and Force of Will, yet out-aggro's every opponent that comes up short in that department. The deck is designed for quite a varied number of sick-ish plays. The realm of possibilities and opportunity-cost calculations this deck can get itself into are staggering. A turn 3 aggro-clock on the play is pretty common, a turn 2/3 Sundering Titan is easily arranged, or how about a turn 1 Trinket Mage with 1 colorless left? Goblin Welder and Esperzoa are the kingpins of the deck acting as selective Dark Confidants, for cheap or with a bigger Ass. If either one is unanswered, the deck spirales out of control so quickly, that piloting the deck becomes a logistical nightmare, with way to many plays to make. I'm loving it, though don't say I didn't warn ya. You need cahuna's, proper math skills and a good dose of creativity to run this list.
I'll finish the primer tomorrow-ish...gotta go

FoW should be in there, but not happening money-wise.
Thrist for Knowledge proved to be decidingly underwhelming during testing. Maaaybe board material + pro RG Sphinx.
Trinisphere in the board. Don't know yet, too much anti-synergy. I guess a few asswipes by belcher/storm might change my opinion.
Fire/Ice seems cool.

There's room in the board for a 3-off, so suggestions, particarly budget ones are very welcome.

So I was watching the coverage of PT Amsterdam, and they said [CARDS] Scapeshift [/CARDS} was the most played deck of the weekend. Of course, these decks aren't really that similar to the ones from last extended season, which Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa piloted to a top 8 at GP Houston. I went and reread his tournament report and two things struck me.
1) Scapeshift is a very powerful combo that really only needs one card
2) The deck seems capable of beating creature based decks fairly easily

When I first played Scapeshift I was struck by the fact that it can virtually ignore what the opponent does and just kill out of nowhere. The immediate decrying counter-argument is that there are numerous decks in legacy that can do this, all of which require fewer than seven lands in play to win the game. But again, there are some more things which occurred to me while rereading PV's report.
1) Scapeshift is legitimately a one card combo. As opposed to Natural Order, which requires a creature in play, or Show and Tell, which requires a second card in hand, Scapeshift only needs to be cast to be effective (I understand that the seven lands are an important factor, but decks normally play out lands so this is less of a specific restriction)
2) Scapeshift kills and is not commonly answered. I've seen plenty of Emrakul's get Edicted, and the same goes for Progenitus. While Valakut can be stifled, I have seen fewer stifles of late, and that only stops one of the triggers.
3) The sideboard hate against a Valakut kill is narrow or not played. Cards like Runed Halo and Leyline of Sanctity, while answers, are uncommon cards and still easily answerable.
4) Seven lands is doable. I didn't see this as a reasonable factor, until I read the Death Cloud thread and realized that given the vast cardpool of legacy, getting seven lands into play is no big deal.
5) Firespout is really good right now. Look at the CounterTop lists from Columbus, it's a good reason to play red.
and finally:
6) If Jace, the Mind Sculptor breaks mirror matches, then playing acceleration to a get turn three Jace seems pretty good.

so here is my first draft of a scapeshift deck for legacy, pretty much taking the Top 8 deck from GP Houston and subbing out cards.

4 Sakura Tribe-Elder
2 Wood Elves
4 Force of Will
4 Brainstrom
3 Spell Pierce
3 Firespout
3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
4 Search for Tomorrow
4 Ponder
4 Scapeshift
1 Counterspell
4 Taiga
4 Volcanic Island
2 Tropical Island
3 Forest
3 Island
1 Mountain
2 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
4 Misty Rainforest
1 Scalding Tarn

The manabase especially could be worked out a lot better, but I think this deck really has potential to compete and could be really good. Or it's entirely terrible, as is often the case with abstract conjecture. So the question is, can this work?

Hey guys,

I've been reading The Source for a couple months now and I finally decided to post something. My roommate and I developed this version of Painter's Servant / Grindstone combo using Goblin Welder and Intuition. Of course all comments and criticisms are welcome.

Here is the list as of 9/1/10:

Main:

1x Crucible of Worlds
1x Engineered Explosives
2x Grindstone
4x Lion's Eye Diamond
3x Sensei's Divining Top

1x Inkwell Leviathan
4x Painter's Servant
4x Goblin Welder

1x Great Furnace
1x Seat of the Synod
1x Vault of Whispers
1x Island
1x Mountain
4x Ancient Tomb
4x City of Brass
4x Gemstone Mine

4x Intuition
3x Thirst for Knowledge
4x Dark Ritual
2x Duress
4x Ponder
2x Reanimate
4x Thoughtseize

Sideboard:(Not Complete)

1x Ethersworn Canonist
1x Sphinx of the Steel Wind
4x Helm of Obedience
4x Leyline of the Void

To explain some choices:

Inkwell Leviathan: In my local meta there is quite a bit of Merfolk/Landstill/CounterTop so the Islandwalk and Shroud on this guy make him the ideal reanimate or weld target main board.

Helm of Obedience/Leyline of the Void Combo in Sideboard: I haven't done extensive testing with this yet but if your opponent boards in graveyard hate to take care of the Welder combo game 2 and you board into HelmLine they may or may not have the right answer in hand. Still struggles with Krosan Grip as much as the main board does. This sideboarding strategy is definitely up for debate.

Sphinx of the Steel Wind: Zoo.

Ethersworn Canonist: ANT/combo in general. Weld her out when I want to play stuff, weld her back in to lock them out.

Some challenges seen in test playing so far:

Two of the cornerstones of the deck are Painter's Servant and Goblin Welder, both of which are incredibly susceptible to Swords to Plowshares. This card is very prevalent and difficult to play around but I still have an out in Inkwell Leviathan.

Wasteland: Ouch. The mana base isn't particularly fragile unless you keep a questionable hand (something that could go off turn 1 if unhindered by your opponent) and that falls through and you get wasted. On the topic of the mana base:

Lands: Ouch again. If the game goes on more than 5 turns I've typically dealt myself 10+ damage with the lands and Thoughtseize. This is really dangerous if you don't find an Intuition or another out to get the combo online. I'm also lacking in shuffle effects due to the lack of fetch lands (hence Ponder over Brainstorm). I like the aggressive ANT style mana base but this is definitely up to debate.

Counterbalance: This card is a huge challenge for a deck like this with so many 1 drops... Playing around it is difficult but far from impossible.

Test Playing Results: (More detailed test playing reports to come)

Merfolk - 50/50. Chumping their dudes with Painter and welding him back in saved me more than once. Thoughtseize and Duress are crucial here. Inkwell Leviathan was put in specifically for this match up.

CounterTop - 70/30 (not in this deck's favor). This one is hard but if you can time everything right and get tricky with Intuition and Welder you can get there.

Well that is all I have for now. Again, comments and criticisms welcome. I'd love to hear what you guys have to say, especially with some sideboarding strategies.

This is a little number that I came up borrowing from extended decks now rotating out. I feel like with the rotation of Extended, Legacy will gain some players. And indeed I have been seeing some more rock type of variations from the extended format.

This deck does well against combo and decent at control. I would say the biggest problem is Merfolk and other aggro creature decks so Enginered Plauge is recommended in the side. I was playing a landfall deck and I sided it naming insect to stop the Plated Geopede. I really like Serra Avenger with the equipment, vigilance + flying is perfect with Jitte. Early on use the discard. This deck has a good long term game, using Basilik Collar or Jitte can be key for this with the lifegain. With DC you can really spit the creatures out combined with Vial most everything is at 2. Of course this is also a weakness with EE getting dropped but between the discard creatures and your Knights I think the deck will do fine.
The plan vs. aggro is to bring War Monks in for Force of Will and just try to hold off the ground assault with goyfs, walls, and monks while your big monster wins through. This version of the list is 62 cards, so some stuff needs to go, but I think it's getting closer. Big props to Sam for the "preanimation" name and some solid deck suggestions. I have no idea what the final living wish/time of need split count should be, or if the deck should run both. This is still immensely a work in progress. Thanks to all for all suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming.
