I guess it was supposed to be bragging but you are pretty much right. Buying just for speculations sake is super hostile for the game and others. Of course the person gains some money on the process....

Vast majority of the cards needed to play this game cost almost nothing. I get it, you don't buy power or duals when you start because they are expensive but the thing is: newbies never did that....

If you are new to this game, you likely do not start from the eternal formats. You'd be more interested in the price of the booster packs, bulk boxes and 8+ mana monsters than tournament playable...
