You obviously don't thoughtseize when they have 1 card left in hand and mana up, that would be stupid. If they blast you in response and you take a chain lightning, you take 6 instead of 7.

Your rationale is correct. If you don't have a card that's better than saving you 1 life for 2 mana (vs bolt for example) in your board, keep them in. Especially good on the play like you explained...
