Without testing, my first thought is that Mana Vortex will be worse than Back to Basics in most situations. There will be times when you have vial out and get to win off the temp stolen by Vortex,...
I certainly agree that divert can do better, I'm just saying that I would definitely be siding it in for that match up it it's in my board.
@Duke: How many lands was in your burn playing partners deck? I would be surprised if most lists consistently made more than three land drops in the first five turns - and if they do, that's great...
