[Report] TES takes 4th at $1,000 Play the Game event

Alright, fare warning, if you're going to bitch and complain about my match-ups do it elsewhere. I didn't have any truly difficult match-ups, I accept this, and wasn't going to write a report. However, I was asked to do so.

My day started with my falling asleep at 3 in the morning, waking up to my cat puking on my bed at 7 AM. Nice. I was extremely bored all morning waiting to go to the event. After what seemed to be a week, I left, and was one of the first few people there. I talked with some old friends, including Parcher, who said I'll top 8. As always, the tournament started late. I began to notice that people can't pronounce my deck name while I was talking to them, it's how you say each individual letter, not test minus the t.

Changes to former lists are in bold.

Round One: John Testone with "Painterstill"

Game One: I Brainstorm turn one, Thoughtseize him turns two and three. Turn four I go off starting with, 2x Brainstorm, Chant, 2x Rite of Flame, 2x Lion's Eye Diamond, Burning Wish, Diminishing Returns. I DReturns into 3x Dark Ritual, Lotus Petal, Thoughtsieze, Infernal Contract, Burning Wish. I cast Infernal Contract into 2x SSG, Tendrils and a land. I burning Wish floating 8, revealing two Tendrils of Agony.

Sideboarding: -1 Infernal Contract, -2 Simian Spirit Guide, -1 Chrome Mox, -2 Ponder. +3 Pyroblast, +3 Vexing Shusher.

Game Two: I keep a 3x Lotus Petal, 3x Dark Ritual, Thoughtsieze hand. I draw a land, play it pass, then next turn draw Burning Wish, I play my hand. Into Diminishing Returns, cast my entire hand of mana and Ill-Gotten Gains, I am forced to Returns again, I do. I play my entire hand, while drawing Tendrils in my hand. I end up playing Tendrils with a storm count of 26.

    2-0
    1-0

Round Two: Zach Murphy (Edgewalker) with Ichorid.

Game One: We get deck checked. We shuffle up, again. I cast Diminishing Returns after he dredges half of his deck and doesn't hit therapy. I am forced to pass. He does his thing again, double therapy this time. Naming LED the first time, taking my Infernal Tutor the second time. I Ill-Gotten Gains my Returns back. Then go off using it.

    Sideboarding: -3 Orim's Chant, -3 Thoughtsieze, +3 Shattering Spree, +3 Pyroblast.

Game Two: We both mulligan, Zach to 5, myself to 6. He starts with "Go", I go land, Brainstorm, Petal, SSG, Rite of Flame, Dark Ritual, Empty the Warrens. He Scoops.

    4-0
    2-0

Round Three: Nick Wowelko (NickRit2000) with Rgb Goblins.

Game One: I start out with, Petal, Dark Ritual, Lion's Eye Diamond, Infernal Tutor, Empty the Warrens. He starts out with Goblin Lackey. I swing, leaving 2 back, then winning.

    Sideboarding: -3 Orim's Chant, +3 Shattering Spree.

Game Two: Nick Therapy's me naming Dark Ritual. I reveal my hand...
Chrome Mox, Shattering Spree, Dark Ritual, Infernal Tutor, Burning Wish, Lion's Eye Diamond, Orchard. I soon after win the game.

    6-0
    3-0

Round Four: Kevin (Beastman) with Survival.
Before the round begins I win a door prize of a Hypnotic Specter print. Cool right?

Game One: He Cabal Therapies me 4 times by the end of his 2nd turn.

Sideboarding: -2 Chant, +2 Shattering Spree.

Game Two: I play land, Ponder. He Therapies me, naming Burning Wish. It's on top of my deck. I play land, Chrome Mox, Burning Wish for Returns. Pass, upkeep Chant. Returns, he never sees another turn.

Game Three: He Therapies me. Naming Brainstorm hits two, he sees I also have 2 Rite of Flame. I play land, Petal, pass, he flashes back Therapy, naming Rite of Flame. I have nothing left other than Land and Contract. I draw LED. I play land, Contract into...Infernal Tutor, SSG, SSG, Land. Play LED, Pass. He bashes me for 5 with a 'goyf. I draw a 2nd Lion's Eye Diamond and go ballistic.

    8-1
    4-0

Round Five: Anwar (Anwar101) with Ichorid.

Game One: I mulligan, keeping a 2x Chrome Mox, hand. I lose.

Sideboarding: Same as previous Ichorid match-up.

Game Two: I keep a weak hand, it consists of 2x Chrome Mox and Tendrils. I somehow manage to Empty the Warrens for 10. I attack, he does stuff. I play Simian Spirit Guides, turns out we're also the feature match. Anwar combos out then, I realize he's at 3 from creating blockers and such. That's why he can't win. He's at 3! I'm a moron. He's forced to lose.

Game Three: I'm not even doing to write anything. Anwar messed up, I won because of it. I don't like winning rounds like this.
    10-2
    5-0

Round Six: Geoff Smelski (Konsultant) with Landstill.

    10-2-1
    5-0-1

Round Seven: David Gearhart (Deep6er) with It's the Fear.

    10-2-2
    5-0-2

Top 8: Don (AngryTroll) with Survival.
I get deck checked again, I swear it's because my deck is PIMP.

Game One: I look at my hand of SSG, Infernal Tutor, Land, LED, Burning Wish, Land, and Lotus Petal. I remove SSG and Infernal revealing LED, then win turn two with Ill-Gotten Gains.

Game Two: Pretty much the same thing as game one. I just Brainstorm into the second LED instead.

    12-2-2
    6-0-2

Top 4: David Caplan (Goobafish aka Goobs of Fish) with Canadian Threshold.

Game One: He opens with 2 Force, 2 blue card, 2 wasteland.

Sideboarding: -1 Infernal Contract, -2 Simian Spirit Guide, -1 Chrome Mox, -2 Ponder. +3 Pyroblast, +3 Vexing Shusher.

Game Two: He locks me into a lose/lose situation with dazes, after I thoughtsieze twice and chant him.

    12-4-2
    6-1-2

All in all, it was a great event, and I had a blast. It was great to see all of you and to walk away with 125$ and the Hypnotic Specter print.

Were you happy with your choice of thoughtseize?
Were you playing the Orchard instead of the City of Bolts because of Thoughtseizes in the deck?

Did you miss some number of Xantids in the SB?
    Congrats on the finish!

    Also,
Game Two: Nick Therapy's me naming Dark Ritual. I reveal my hand...
Chrome Mox, Shattering Spree, Dark Ritual, Infernal Tutor, Burning Wish, Infernal Tutor, Orchard. I soon after win the game.
How the hell did you win this? Drew LED? Brainstorm into goodness?

The quote is a mistake, I only had one Infernal, I had a Lion's Eye Diamond in hand. It was a turn one win through Chalice of the Void. Thoughtsieze has been amazing. Especially against blue and permanent based problems ...counterbalance...

You guessed it, Orchard is because of Tarnished Citadel, take 5 blows. Xantid is good, but I'd much rather be able to deal with Counterbalance. People have been playing less and less chants. Or you can discard them with Thoughtsieze.

It's not a simple hand. Your hand is now Chrome Mox, Shattering Spree, Infernal Tutor, Burning Wish, Lion's Eye Diamond, Orchard.

This hand can't combo right now.
Did you draw LED/D.Rit and comboed on the spot with IGG?
Or did you draw a SSS, Mox, Rite of flame and D.Return with 0 mana floating?
Or did you play the LED to avoid the flashback of therapy waiting to draw some other mana?

    Sry about those tedious questions!

I drew a land. Played LED, passed. On my turn drew Brainstorm into SSG, Dark Ritual, X. Won from there.

Nice finish. How's the random Contract? I feel really tempted to cut it for another Ponder because Ponder finds LED and Tutors more effectively than Contract. Also, why use Contract to reload against control when you can just punch your opponent's hand with Thoughtseize and bluffing Chants and find something useful off your Ponder?

Card advantage. It fixes mulligans and wins games on it's own. Did you read how it won me the round against survival? It's amazing against discard. It also allows you to win without using Ill-Gotten Gains or Diminishing returns as a storm generator.

I understand. Since you put it that way, do you see yourself running a 2nd copy again in the near future?

Congrats on the finish Bryant. Although I went 3-4 with your list it was Solid for me as well. I honestly just had awful luck:
Things like Diminishing Returning off 4 B-Wish, Tendrils, and Empty happened... Oh well.

I was referring to the fact that I should be workhorse #2. This was the first large event I haven't top8d in in a while.

Bryant, how and when do you sideboard in the Shushers and Pyroblast? Obviously, you're not going to sideboard in all six and leave in 4 Chant and 3 Thoughtseize; it will just dilute your combo way too much. What/when do you side out for those cards?

Congrats on your win, btw. Amazing.
