The Awesome Altered Card Art Thread

I followed a banner on SCG to some pretty cool altered art cards.

Be sure to check out the Star Wars ones.

EDIT FOR SIMPLICITY - The ruling on altered art is OFFICIALLY:

It's up to the head judge, on a per-event basis. Be sure to OK the cards with the head judge prior to any event you intend to use the cards in, and it may be a good idea to bring a backup, too.

Haha, I've been following this guy on ebay for HELLA long. I love altered cards, so I search "mtg altered" every day on ebay and his stuff started coming up a month or so ago. The second I saw the ponder I messaged him and asked him how much a set would cost, but he said that he didn't really want to take orders because he just enjoyed doing them for fun, not as a business. I was sad, but it would probably cost hella money. His best are definitely the birds, the ponder, and the incinerate. he is a hella beast though, I showed some of my friends at a local card shop and they were blown away by the cryoclasm (or w/e the clasm, not pyroclasm though).

    Re: Altered Art...

I have a question. In all honesty, how much would you actually pay for alterations like these?

The reason that I ask is that I've actually got a huge urge to start doing it myself. I've been doing painting on and off for years now, and actually want to start working on it, but I would need capital that I don't have to invest in the supplies, since it would take a large selection of colors to match cards colors consistently.

Also, about how long would you be willing to wait on a single card, playset, etc?

I'm honestly considering this as an actual hobby/business on the side, so I'd like to get some honest answers from you guys.

I wouldn't at all. I can't stand "pimp" stuff (other than pimps themselves) or the collectible value of cards.

This Mystical Tutor, however, is just fucking insane.

I love how it's an alternate version of the guy from the Dark Ritual circa Alpha.

Other than that sir, I can't say your opinion counts, since I know you don't care about pimp stuff. You can go back to beating face with your playtesting, and tweaking, and number crunching, I'll continue to scrub out in style.

I think that Incinerate is probably the best of all of those modifications, and indeed one of the best I've ever seen. That's some good shit right there.

Incorrect. The only thing written in the rules about this is that the art has to be recognizable. I'd say that art is recognizable, and the card is therefor playable.

    @APriestofGix:

From the DCI Magic Floor Rules

    28. Taking Notes
Players are allowed to take brief written notes regarding the current match and may refer to those notes while this match is in progress. Players are expected to take their notes in a timely fashion. Players who take too much time will be subject to the appropriate provisions of the DCI Penalty Guidelines.
During the draft portion of a tournament, players and spectators may not take any notes. Players may not refer to outside notes during the match. This includes notes from previous matches of that day.
Cards used in a tournament may not have writing on their faces other than signatures or artistic modifications. Modifications may not obscure the artwork so as to make the card unrecognizable. If modifications to a card are deemed by the Head Judge to constitute outside notes or unsporting conduct, the player using such cards will be subject to the appropriate provisions of the DCI Penalty Guidelines.

Derf, Lego beat me to it.

    Re: Altered Art...

In addition to the art having to be legible, you HAVE to have the text box in as well, including spell type. The artwork portion you actually bolded was the new modification to the rules, the wording has always been a requirement. The portion you cited was specifically because of work that was done to make the artwork into something not like the original, much like a lot of the alt stuff like Vromman does.
