Brainstorm

I'd like to note that I don't necessarily endorse Chapin's conclusions from that article. It just seemed like relevant material for discussion, and he's a pretty bright guy.
I'd love for Demonic Consultation to be unbanned in the same way that I'd love for Mind's Desire or Mystical Tutor to be unbanned. I just want to play it in a storm deck with little regard for whether it's actually good for diversifying the format at all.
If I were in charge of the decision, I'd ban Show and Tell and unban Land Tax.
If something really drastic happened and Brainstorm was banned, I'd probably just jam four Preordains in my deck and put my Brainstorms away in a binder beside my Mystical Tutors. I'd still love Legacy and I'd still play it on a weekly basis. I'd still travel to Legacy GPs.

Lab Maniac would love some Demonic Consultation ... for Bone Flute
Lab Maniac, Doomsday, Spoils of the Vault, and Demonic Consultation sounds fun.
Spoils of the Vault isn't so great if you want to exile your entire library...
Demonic Consultation for Mirror of Fate stuff could be more interesting, but it doesn't have to be a combo deck at all. Demonic Consultation->Force of Will/Pact of Negation is pretty stupid too.
Pop quiz: Which of these cards is stronger?
Demonic Consultation
Demonic Tutor
How would any of you rank the 3 banned black tutors (excluding Imperial Seal) in terms of power level?
Or rather, if you had to unban one of these tutors, which one would you feel safest to unban?
Vampiric Tutor
Demonic Tutor
Demonic Consultation
- Trick question.
The answer is none and if you think otherwise you're a moron.
EDIT: Wait wait! The answer is Tinker! Lets unban Tinker!
If they ban SNT, I'd like to see Vampiric come off to allow combo to remain a pillar of the metagame. Nothing but aggro decks gets old after a while.
Yup. Card disadvantage tutors are typically used in combo decks. The added versatility of Vampiric is compensated by the lifeloss (bad with Ad Nauseam) and the fact that it's not blue to pitch to FoW. Simply put, the gentlemans agreement excuse to ban MT was bullshit, and if they ban SNT, I'd like to see VT come off the list. I'm oldschool... I like combo being a pillar of the metagame.
I think Chapin is trolling about Consultation.
If you really want a tutor, Mystical Tutor is the safest to unban, and even it is probably overpowered in legacy without also banning something like LED or Show and Tell.
Consultation is a ridiculous card that should never see the light of day. For every person using it to innocently tutor up removal or threats in their aggrocontrol deck, there will be twenty people using it to end the world.
It's a shame they completely whiffed on the reason for why Mystical was banned. They will never live that down.
I agreed with the banning but obviously there was no unspoken rule about playing M. Tutor in tournaments it's just that it still wasn't a good idea when blue was so popular and the time in America.
What they should have said was
"Mystical tutor does everything in the decks it goes in at instant speed and at EOT.
It gets the combo piece when it's time to go off.
It gets your 1x utility spell when you need it
It gets rituals when you need accell to win next turn.
It gets disruption when you need to clear the way.
and it allows the deck to run multiple silver bullets in the SB as 1xs and have access to 5x of them postboard. This allows the deck to not only have extremely flexible sideboard space as they can run answers to everything and still have multiple slots remaining for general SB strats, it also allows them to have maximum effect post board while only siding out a minimum number of cards.
On their own none of these effects are gamebreaking. In combination we feel they are too strong."
That should have been the official response, not "we won a handful of games vs. terrible legacy players = ban."

It would have sufficed to say "It's better than vampiric tutor in the decks that run it".
Please stop talking about whether Force of Will is broken or not. It obviously is, and rather than "the glue that holds vintage together" it would be better to call it "the rug under which you hide the filth until there's so much that you can no longer conceal it".
Except that it's not.
That 2 life swing is totes worth it to be able to get LED in ANT or fatty if you have Careful Study + Reanimation in Reanimator. Not to mention you could stick a 1x Pithing Needle in Reanimator SB to nullify Crypt/Relic/Fae Macabre or cram a couple Tombstalkers in your ANT sideboard and go transformational while still having the combo post board. Still too strong though. If they reprinted M. Tutor as a Sorc it would be fine. Hell if Imperial Seal wasn't an $800 card it would be borderline unbannable (far safer than any other banned list tutor).
