It is a good card. Give it a try. We can make all 5 colors, so it is at its most versatile in our deck.

    Re: [Deck] Bant

Went 3-2 this weekend (actually this are my stats for every single tournament i played with this deck), placing 6 of 18.....beating ANT, UBG-Faerie Control and Belcher, got beaten up seriously (0:2) by grixis control and Czech Pile. My list is pretty stock with only two wastelands and no basics.

My takeaways from the last 3 Tournaments:
    • Although i love casting Jace, he felt like either a win-more, a pyroblasted failure or couldn't be protected (=was uncastable)
    • Had to mulligan a lot, i want to change that
    • Couldn't really take the big-tempo role very often. Most of the time i won by sticking an unanswered bomb (equipment and/or TNN, Jace), that could also be cast 1-2 turns later.
    • Kolaghan's command is a disaster. This card and those Snapcasters crushed me way too often. i am not sure how to fix this.
    • Blood Moon is an issue.
    • Our Sideboard against combo feels great
    • Daze is both the best and worst card

My plan is to cut Jace, one daze, and a land (to 19 total) for 4 Ponder in the main. I hope that this improves my mulligans and my mid game card selection (bombs). Also, i think, that the ponders improve my ability to find the sideboard hate in g2/g3.
I will try Lingering Souls (as limbo suggested) in the sideboard. I hope that this improves the grindy matchups a little.
I am not ready to switch to 1 Basic-Forest yet, needing more experience with this deck. Right now (4 delta,1 misty, 4 strands) fetching the right lands is easy and i can concentrate on other aspects of the game.

    I have got two questions:
    • Is Rest in Peace something worth considering against these Snapcaster Decks(czech pile, grixis control, miracles)? Some also pack Cabal Therapy,Tasigur and Gurmag Angler. Not sure if I should replace one surgical extraction for a RIP in the sideboard.
    • Is the 4 Ponder, 19 lands-Maindeck plan insane? I love card selection and am ok with it being not the optimal build.
    • Anyone else having trouble with Kolaghan's command and care to share some tech/strategy?

1 RIP is too slow for the graveyard deck that is most popular(b/r reanimator). I think surgical is fine in this spot. I have found having access to 1 thoughtseize in the main and 1 in the side has been helpful in these match ups. None are easy and you have to be on a tempo plan. Also the needle in the board is great because jace is such a hard card to overcome.

2 ponder would be nice, I lose quite a bit of my games from brainstorm locking myself with no way to shuffle when I'm mana screwed, let us know how it goes.

3 i have learned these decks are tough, you must play as the tempo player(the only advise I can really give) again thoughtseize needle meddling mage and sometime canonist help you be aggressive enough to win.

When playing this deck, the individual cards I fear, in order are:
    Cabal therapy
    Hymn to tourach
    Blood Moon
    Kolaghan's command
    gitaxian probe
    Wasteland

I was having the same issue with grindy decks before switching to lingering souls. Against the grindy decks lean on Sword of fire and ice, Leovold and lingering souls. In those matchups I typically cut most or all of my main deck counter magic, bringing in my efficient sideboard counters and grinding cards. Also of note, lingering souls greatly improves your delver matchup across the board. They can't afford to go wide, so once that lands you can switch focus to avoiding being burned out and trying to kill them.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try the 2 Lingering Souls and stick with the 2 surgical extractions in the board. Maybe I will try 1 Forest in the next local tournament.

The black splash has been significant enough and ingrained enough, that I think I am going to start calling the deck Witch-Maw Blade. I look forward to lots confused looks.

    Re: [Deck] Bant

Dropped my two wastelands for an island and 10th fetch for the last two weeks. It hurts a bit against depths decks but against basically everything else it works well. I have been really happy seeing that island. In the right metagame it is something worth trying out.

    Re: [Deck] Bant

Well the only deck I have been having problems with is 4 color piles. The only way I found to be successful is tempo. They just have too much late game. How does everyone else feel about the match up? Any specific sideboarding strategies from the draw and the play?

limbo, was that you in the top 4 of the Quest for Power event yesterday? I noticed the basic forest and lingering souls, your 'trademarks'

Souls looked VERY impressive. If it was you, grats on the result!

NEELEY: I bring in lingering souls against the Pile decks. I like it more than walkers because they can't effectively counter it, so you will get some value. Then it becomes a resource management game, playing around KCommand as much as possible. I bring out some forces and dazes, avoiding 2-for-1s and tempo loss when possible. I don't bring in surgicals (despite them having deathrite and snapcaster). I normally bring in souls, decay, fluster and invasive, and sometimes ZP (TNN/Pyro). Playing around their open mana is the part you have to keep an eye on. TNN, souls, or naturally drawn equipment are very good. Deathrites are good at eating early removal, or are nice topdecks at the end of the game. If you treat them like a test spell/discard spell then you will be better setup moving forward; building your plan around them living is not typically successful.

Yeah, that was me. Thanks. I was back on 2 wastelands (instead of fetch 10 and island) since I expected a lot of lands.
R1) Kurt Spiess on Lands (W 2-0). For anyone who doesn't know him, Kurt is an excellent lands player, so I was not happy to start my day paired against him but wasteland came up at a good time in G1 and in Game 2 I was able to surgical DD when he sacked it to crop rotation.
R2) TES (W 2-0) ** this is a correction, I initially posted Grixis Delver, but my memory failed me; that is why I take notes.**
R3) UR Delver (L 0-2) My draws were slow, no dork, and he played well, setting me up for double PoP in both games. Maindeck blood moon drew out my force in game 1, then came the PoPs.
    R4) Sneak and Show (W 2-1)
    R5) Sneak and Show (W 2-0)
R6) Storm (ID) Able to cleanly ID into 8th, so I did.
    Top 8) on camera
Top 4) split, get food, drive home

Top8 my match starts at 1:29 into the video. A couple of notes:
    1) I was not happy with my line in game 1, basically got wrong footed, played around pierce, stifle, and therapy, ultimately not doing enough with what was actually going on. His wastelands put too much pressure on me to play the way I did.
    2) Someone in the chat said I laid out 8 cards for game 2. You can clearly see that is not correct (1:47:20), and on a probe later the commentators do the count to confirm.
    3) G2 I miss a free attack the first time I have skull and 2 SFM. Should have gotten in for 2.
    4) Commentators were confused at one point when my opponent wasted a misty. He knew that I put a decay on top of my library and was putting me to a decision on it.
    5) I held back the last lingering souls flashback until I had a way past the grim and could keep up skull bounce.
    6) My opponents 5 card hand in G3 was outstanding, but not quite enough given that I had more powerful cards and more resources.
    7) Well run tournament (other than a couple of slow round flips), nice shop.

Edit: If you can make it to this series of events I recommend it. The room is a mixed level of skill, but there are always 10+ very good players (Spiess, David Long, Jarvis Yu, Bob Huang, Anuraag Das, Ben Freidman, etc). I have been to 3 so far, going top16, and Top 4 twice. Really happy with the deck.
    Edit 2: Fixed link.

Congrats on the top 4 finish limbo. By any chance, do you have a list? Poked around the MTGFirst site for a while, couldn't find top 8 lists anywhere.

Same one from post 2461 and 2505. Went back to the old tried and true list. I have been playing with my mana base a bit and swapping in and out some sideboard cards in board, but for this tournament I didn't have a compelling reason for any of the changes, plus i wanted wasteland for the lands matchups.

    Same list I've been playing.

Split the finals of the eternal weekend 5k, there were only 50 or so players.

Deck was great should of just played it in the main event. Hopefully next big event I'll make a better choice😀

Congrats on splitting in the finals. I would also have to agree with you, I think this deck is one of the strongest decks in the format right now and you definitely should have played it in the main event instead.

Are you still on David Doberne's 75? How do you approach the Czech Pile MU pre-board and post-board? How do you SB against Czech Pile? I find that MU in particular very hard because Kommand is a hell of a card. My main approach is to Voltron with TNN and hope they don't find Toxic Deluge or Lili/Edict with TNN as my only creature, but doesn't always work out.

Yes I'm still on his 75. Match up isn't easy but our plan is to play a tempo game. nemesis can do it but I think counters and thoughtseize are the best way to achieve the game plan.

    Re: [Deck] Bant

So I guess for post-SB, we do -4 FoW, -1 Noble Hierarch, +2 Flusterstorm, +1 Thoughtseize, +2 Ethersworn Canonist?Ethersworn Canonist can be awkward vs. Kommand but does slow Czech Pile down and shuts off SCM.

I wouldn't side out Forces if you're looking to play a tempo game, probably some STP/Decays can go first.

Yes unfortunately you want to leave in majority of forces in this match. Your goal is to stop a Jace or deluge, so you don't let them get too far ahead.
