Hey, some of you know me. It's been a bit since I've posted a link to an article of mine over here, but I have what I hope you'll find to be an interesting read. I'm talking about the tale of my last week where I decided to try to qualify for Worlds (since I was close anyway.)
Why am I talking about it here? Well, I did it through nearly entirely Legacy events, something that likely will never be possible again.
It's lengthy, like most of my articles, so if you have some free time, give it a read:

Thanks for taking a look.
Team Bad Guys
I have come up with an excellent way to be happy! Every time someone says a sentence I simply add on a few words after it:
Oh my goodness, it's been so great. People with stupid opinions now immediately acknowledge how dumb they are! Internet fights still have all the swears and name calling but now they're instantly undermined by my new suffix.Originally Posted by You
As fun as the general premise of your mad dash to qualify is/was, once I got to repeated sections outlining this kind of thinking or "strategy"... I lost interest. What's the fun in trying, if you're just hoping to get as many freebies as possible. The first match against my friend was uneventful, as he understood why we were there and gave me the win so that I could carry on, although his deck was very good. Moving on to my second-round opponent, we sat down and he seemed like a nice enough guy, so I explained to him what the goal was for me and what I needed to have happen in order to reach it. He gave me the response that I was dreading hearing at any point—let alone the first time I played a match—“Well, sorry you’re playing against me, then.” He intended to derail the train.
When I play MTG, its to play my best game and have fun every time. Sorry, but I'd be that guy "derailing the train" too. Not out of spite, but because I don't show up to events and pay money to throw games.
This wasn't so much qualifying as it was seeing how many people you could get to scoop to you in 7 days. Granted you did win most of the matches anyways, but Day 5, Round 3 could have possibly killed your goal had he not agreed. Same for the matches that weren't even played.
Congrats on accomplishing your goal, but if it were me it wouldn't mean much based on the way you got it. I would rather play out every game and miss the cutoff than to qualify and leave myself to wonder if I would have made it if I played everything out.
Personally, I think you owe it to all the people that scooped you in to the invite to go unless you financially can't. And why not raise the bar and set a new goal to Top 8 Worlds? Hopefully you reconsider going. The quest wasn’t about going to Worlds at all. Hell, I don’t even know if I’ll be attending the event for sure. Trying to qualify for Worlds was to reach another personal goal for me—something that was attainable and interesting—not to prove myself to anyone else.
Attaining your goals isn't always something you can control. All the articles and videos available won't help if your deck just doesn't want to cooperate for you on a given night. You even posted an example of how 1 loss can set you back by a substantial amount which is the same reason I haven't attained my personal goal yet.If you’re not happy with where you are in Magic, I challenge you to do the same thing: Set attainable goals, do the reading, watch the videos—they’re all available. If Magic is something you want to be good at, you’re going to have to make the effort; no one is naturally skilled at the most complicated game on the planet.
I applaud you though for getting your total rating that high primarily through Legacy though, that alone is quite impressive.
Amazing article! I wish you can attend Worlds. ^^
If you fail to explain the reason behind your choice, technically, it's the wrong choice.
Zerk Thread -- Really, fun deck! ^^
Congrats! It would be a shame not to attend Worlds, especially because it's in the states...
Halfway the thread I began wondering if this could be seen as cheating//bribery...
Whenever I see a kid in a wheelchair it makes me a little sad. Because I always think, "Gee, they could have used those same wheels to make a bike for a regular kid. What a waste."
As one of the people that drove him to 3 of the 5 events, I can say he didn't offer anything for a concession, and was always more then willing to play it out.
Even after I wasted 15 dollars and a night on Call of Duty to draft a great deck and get paired against him round1 on Tuesday. Bitterbitterbitter.
Edit - Also I kinda skimmed the article as I lived it, but I'm pretty sure anyone that conceded to him he ended up beating anyway. Except me, because I refused to do that and went to get food. I get beat by Chris enough in 'play testing'
