Not all options are created the same! The marginal cost on misplaying a slow spell is much greater than that on misplaying a fast spell, all other things being held equal. Against an untapped fetchland it's very difficult to know whether or not to drop a Library or a Tarmogoyf, for instance, but if you could make the choice at the end of their next turn, or maybe Spell Snare or Hymn instead, it would become a lot easier.

The more I listened to this podcast, the more I'm thinking Brainstorm is not the problem, but a number of other factors that lead to Brainstorm being so dominant. Unfortunately, banning it won't solve those problems.

"The game is not worth the candle."
A turn 1 Brainstorm is probably the worst use of the card I can imagine. You don't want to draw half the cards that you put back because it greatly reduces the power of Brainstorm. When my opponent plays a turn 1 Brainstorm, I chuckle, knowing that I will probably out play my opponent at several points of the game.
In general, I'd say the later the Brainstorm, the more game-winning its effect. This is because, when 2 players don't have gas anymore, the person that can put back 2 lands or otherwise inappropriate cards to draw 3 fresh cards, is the one that recovers soonest from being out of gas.
