The Saturday "Legacy Challenge" doesn't count as a high level non-Standard event on Saturday?

I haven't been to an SCG yet this year but it was always my experience that the challenge was never big. Might as well just play win a box.

The Challenge events typically got more than 30 players at minimum. That's about as big as our local events, but with less entry/prizes. It's a good gauge to the metagame for the Sunday event as well.

I agree. The player pool is also above average, and people are more prone to experimentation. But with little at stake, people play it about as seriously as a FNM.
That said the best reasons to play in it are:
    1. It's legacy
    2. It's cheap.
    3. Nothing better to do.

What time do the Legacy Challenge games begin on Saturdays? No way in hell I drive 30-40 mins to a Standard Open only to find I'm late to the Legacy Challenge.

Typically around 4-6 PM on Saturday. Not earlier.
