Star City Open 2012 - Legacy, not Modern

    http://www.starcitygames.com/pages/open_series/

A few months back many people were questioning whether Modern would displace Legacy in the SCG Open. It would seem that Legacy is still favored, at least by SCG.

Should we expect a bump in the price of legacy staples?

What other major tournaments would impact the price of legacy staples?

This isn't news. They've said it would be Legacy for months.

I know this is late in the discussion, and slightly off-topic, but I just wanted to say:

    1) We're very happy with Legacy Attendance,
    2) Think Legacy is a fantastic constructed format with a generally healthy metagame
    3) Will continue to support Legacy as the main event on Day 2 of our Opens and
    4) We have continued to see Legacy attendance grow over the course of the past year!

Our support of Modern over 2012 at the Open Series will be in the form of Modern Challenge events, much like we have the Legacy Challenge event on Saturday night. The Modern Challenge events will be in addition to the already-existing events, so no Legacy events will be replaced (IE, we will still have the Legacy Challenge on Saturday, and we will continue to have our Legacy Opens on Sunday!)

Always nice to have more confirmation, though.

Rest of the schedule for 2012 announced: http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/o...s_To_Play.html

Entry fee raised to $40, but prizes go out to top 64 now for a total of $10k. Plus free month of premium, deck box, writing pad, and pen sort of makes up for the increased fee even without the additional prizes... okay, not really.

    Awesome news! Good job, SCG!

I support this move. It also makes it rather difficult to not make money. Pretty X-3 still gets back their entry fee. WIN!

Stoked about how much prize money they are giving out this year.

How do you determine which Opens are Legacy and which aren't?

All of the Weekend Opens will have a Legacy event. I assume these will continue to be on Sundays.

Each stop is two events - Saturday: Standard, and Sunday: Legacy.

Nice. I guess I'll try to make the two LA events.

This is an impressive move by SCG. Increasing their prize support by more than 50% for each open and only raising their entry fee by 33% is unbelievable value.

It makes it even more curious, though, because Legacy opens usually don't make money (off pure tournament entries) as it is.

They aren't doing it to make money on entries. The entire goal of each weekend is to buy cards at the booth.

The removal of the draft opens is a shame. I have always wanted to play in them, but my legacy prowess never allowed me the opportunity :(
So much for having faith in the powers-that-be to eventually provide Saturday Afternoon Draft Opens :(

I don't see why they wouldn't support legacy. In the end, they are a secondary seller, buying/selling old used cards is what they do.

if there is no format, they don't make money on the older stuff.

I think it might be interesting if they actually did have a Modern Open in addition to the Standard and Legacy Opens, though I'm not sure how they'd be able to fit it in.

Three acceptable solutions for me as a Legacy-only player:
    1) Three-day weekends
    2) Replace Standard with Modern (never going to happen)
    3) Modern side events

They do have modern 8mans... that never fire.

I just wish that they had a high level non-standard event on saturday as well, so I had somethiing to do when I drop early when standard does what it does, or have the option to avoid standard alltogether.
