Thread: [Primer] Elves!

    Re: [Primer] Elves!

    Hey green fellows :)

I will be running a NO elves on Sao Paulo GP this weekend, this is my first time actually running the physical deck on a tournament, I've been running elves a lot on xmage and such, but only recently got the whole deck built up.

The MD right now is no secret, my problem is the sideboard, since I will be running into an unknown meta SB is the thing that I would like to improve the most, from what I know the decks that are most played here are Grixis Delver, DnT, stoneblade and RB Reanimator, also expect dredge, burn, Eldrazi, ANT and UR Delver, kind of that sequence.

    This is what I SB:

    1 Natural Order
    3 Faerie Macabre
    1 Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
    4 Cabal Therapy
    2 Thoughtseize
    1 Reclamation Sage
    3 Abrupt Decay

Is this ok? or is there something that should be added/switched on the SB?

I am thinking a lot to add driven/dispair on the SB.

A lot of the discussion seems to have moved to the Discord channel, but making sure you also get this link:

I use Nissa MD also, but only 1 instead of 2.

I find her very very explosive on the combo turn, she does what I always felt Priest of Titania lacked, the ability to tap for mana the moment she comes in, since she works absurdly well with Gaea's. The thing that makes me take her out and put her again in the deck is the 5 cmc, in the grindy matchs she is great, if she can come online, but 5 cmc is a big hill up to achieve fighting through wraths and removals.

Anyway, she is very synergical with the deck, she works wonders with Gaea's and if you get to ultimate her (only 2 turns), she takes the game extremely fast with the number of fetchlands + GSZ for dryad we have on the deck.

Nissa is insanely good against all those 4c Grixis/Leovold Control decks, while also being still good enough vs most Delver decks.

Under what circumstances are you bringing in Ooze? I see you're cutting a Therapy to make room for it, so it clearly must be very important.

When I think about it, it seems too slow for graveyard hate, and too easy to remove with anything but Bolt.

Decks that use snapcaster. if it eats a bolt so be it. the card can over take games and becomes a must answer quickly. it adds to the threat density. decks that play snapcaster or gy staregies. i even play it agaisnt u/w blade decks but may be wrong.

Sorry y'all. I haven't had much time for Magic lately. Life comes at you quick!

    Re: [Primer] Elves!

It is slow, but it is a much more guaranteed hate than other 1 shots like Faerie Macabre, Surgical...
The thing is, some games I waste those hates as fast as possible and "Scooze" finishes the lock.
Also it dodges almost all board wipes on grindy matchups like 4c control when getting bigger than 2/2, and it can gain tons of life and also be extremely hard to take out against burn style decks (Mono-R, UR delver...)

So it is more than just to hate GY, it on a deck that generates the quantity of mana we do, is a RiP on legs that gains life and gets bigger, and with GSZ one on the deck means we have 5 possible Scavenging Ooze to draw.

    Re: [Primer] Elves!

Shaper's Sanctuary looks like a nice sideboard card.

Some decks rely on a lot of spot removal (with snapcaster) to kill every single dude against us.
    Also helps against a jitte!

It does not help against mass removal issues which might be a bigger problem, but it looks strong.

    Re: [Primer] Elves!

The problem is that it would use up SB slot(s). Which is the most valuable ressource we have.

Can't afford to dedicate SB slots to middle-of-the-road "nice" cards with little impact. Especially if they are weak to Leovold.

    Re: [Primer] Elves!

I don't currently play so I don't know the meta and what we need from the SB very well.
    ... so I cannot judge.

But a couple of posts ago you mentioned Nissa as good vs. delver.
I played with Nissa a lot (even before it being mainstream after the asian GP I played it over garruk *proud*) and I think I would prefer Sanctuary over Nissa vs. Delver decks because the games I lose are usually those where every creature is killed early while a delver beats down and the tempo advantage is too much to recover from. If I recover it does not really matter if I win with BFF, Nissa, ooze, glimpse or whatever...

I think i would also rather have Sanctuary over Jitte vs. Delver for the same reasoning...

So a SB plan vs. Delver where I board in 4 decay and 2 Sanctuary would give me 6 cards that help me early if things go well for my opponent.

I am not saying to play Sanctuary over Nissa (or anything else) in the SB.
Just thinking the impact vs. delver decks is high enough to think about a SB inclusion.
Not sure what you mean with "middle of the road" card. :)

    Re: [Primer] Elves!

Would you play it turn 1 over gsz/drs/nettle?
If no, then you don't profit from the most destructive removals. If yes, you slow yourself down quite a bit.
Outside of delver.deck, there is not so much deck you would want it in.
And you do not want to waste sb slots on good MUs for cards that cannot be used for bad ones and do not translate into definitive advantage.

If you want that effect, play leovold, he is really good. He also triggers on discard, toa & wasteland, and shuts down cantrips. Searchable with gsz, partial protection via wirewood. I had played two for a while and it worked really well.
