Quick Summary of MTG Deals Legacy Open Experience 7/6/2013

It's been awhile since I last played but made a concerted effort to play today at the first ever MTG Deals Open legacy event. It was only my 2nd legacy tournament ever but pretty good experience overall. Here's a quick summary.

    Round 1 - Deathblade (2-1); Overall (1-0)
G1: Being rusty, I sequence birchlore and nettle sentinel incorrectly and ultimately lose to jitte.
G2: Fast kill since I don't see any notes.
G3: Topdeck viridian shaman kills jitte and turns the tide.

    Round 2 - Deathblade (1-2); Overall (1-1)
G1: Early jitte results in scoop.
    G2: Glimpse combo.
G3: Lose in a grind-fest in extra turns due to ooze getting there too late.

    Round 3 - Dark Maverick (2-0); Overall (2-1)
G1: Glimpse combo beats gaddock teeg + thalia.
    G2: NO into progenitus.

    Round 4 - Goblins (2-1); Overall (3-1)
    G1: NO into craterhoof.
G2: Surprise piledriver into legion loyalist beats progenitus while facing lethal. Props to him for pulling it out despite the pressure.
G3: Survive and rebuild from pyrokinesis to hardcast craterhoof.

    Round 5 - Punishing Jund (2-0); Overall (4-1)
    G1: NO into craterhoof.
    G2: NO into progenitus.

    Round 6 - Belcher (1-2); Overall (4-2)
G1: Glimpse combo outraces empty the warrens despite being on the draw.
G2: I mulligan away a decent hand trying to find hate and thus lose to empty the warrens.
G3: Triple cabal therapy in opener so I figure I'll take a chance by naming belcher. Unfortunately, he has empty the warrens.

    Round 7 - Deathblade (1-1-1); Overall (4-2-1); 21st
I'm paired with my friend and we're ranked 15/16 heading into the final round. We decide to draw since we're both out of top8 contention but want to guarantee that we both walk away with the top32 prize of $40.

So how many people total hit the Legacy portion? I'm guessing around 100 or so?

I believe my 2nd round opponent on shardless BUG cheated, and my 3rd round opponent cheated. I didn't realize both until today when I was talking with some friends.

Shardless BUG: wouldn't allow me to cut his deck. Never mulled. Ever.

Merfolk: foil lands, foil vials, no foil fishies.

I believe there were 49 tables, and 99 players.
Emptying the Warrens: So YOU don't have to!

@twndomn: Sorry, I posted the summary and linked it in the elves thread without realizing other people outside the thread would read it. I just updated the OP with my deck list. Thanks for catching that.

@feline: I don't know the exact number but I heard from multiple people it was around 100.

@monovfox: Dang, that really sucks. I think you should definitely report the shardless bug player to the store in case he tries those shenanigans in the future.

Next time if someone doesn't let you cut their deck, call a judge, & have the judge shuffle it too. Someone not letting me cut their deck would not pass on my radar, that's extremely irregular for someone to outright refuse a cut like that.

    +1

We have a player around here that we belive is cheating. ALWAYS cut your opponent's deck.

I believe it's actually a violation of the tournament rules. The last person to manipulate your deck before the game starts should be your opponent.
I think the biggest thing is the deep seeded emotional understanding that the right play is the right play regardless of outcomes. The ability to make a decision 5 straight times, lose 5 times because of it, and still make it the 6th time if it's the right play. - Jon Finkel
