[Podcast] Everyday Eternal Podcast Episode 24: Conspiracy Theories

In episode 24 of Everyday Eternal, Matt (sdematt), Sam (dat's me), Sean (nedleeds), and Julian Knab (Julian23) discuss possible eternal-playable cards from the new set, Conspiracy. A few cards from M15 have been spoiled, so we discuss those as well.

I don't think you guys gave Waste Not enough credit. With Hymn to Tourach, it can be pretty amazing CA.

To be fair, the last part of that is still a valid statement.

I think I'd almost rather have this.

Hymn + Waste Not means they lose 2 cards, and unless they discard 2 land, which is pretty decent in itself but rare, you gain:
    a 2/2 creature + a card draw
    2 creatures
    2 cards draws
mana for another spell (including discard since we're talking about Pox here) + a 2/2 creature
or mana (to use on the) + card draw.

    For 1 Hymn.

    Pardon the lack of grammar.

You've spent a turn. You've spent 2 cards. You might get ... 2 tokens. You might get BB BB.

Why not just Hymn them twice? (with Mindcrank or some other 2 for 1). Why are you spending a card on Waste Not, just cast a Sculler. Then Hymn them. Look ... you have a 2/2. At least if you draw Sculler on turn 10 it's a creature and not a card that reads 1B - Enchantment "Put this on the battlefield and stare at it."

You've spent a turn playing a Pox deck though - that's different. The deck isn't fast, and it's super control. I actually think this card makes the deck win much faster, and lets it draw cards - both traditional problems for it. Anyway, who knows if it's good but I think in the 1 deck it has a lot of potential.

My point was that Hymn alone is good enough to play. You don't need to talk about Waste Not to justify Hymn to Tourach. Raven's Crime + Waste Not, now that's a meaningful discussion.

Waste Not into Liliana doesn't seem completely bad, either.

The main problems I see with Waste Not are

    - does nothing by itself, which means you have to compensate for -1 CA first
    - if your opponent has no cards in hands because he vomited everything on the board, it's dead as well

If you wanted some mileage out of it, you would need to run Anvil of Bogardan, preferably combined with Chains for maximum trolling.

    Yeah if I'm 2 card comboing with a 1B enchantment it's Chains ...

I'll probably play it for fun. You could play matster of feast so that you can assure your opponent of having something to discard every turn

Unless its an Abrupt Decay for your Master of Feast or Lilianna or Waste Not.

Yeah, Waste Not is pretty terrible. Once your opponent realizes that you're on the "make them discard their hand for value" plan they just dump their spells and now you're running tons of dead discard spells and a dead on-board Waste Not (plus, presumably, more in your deck). It's the same reason Megrim and Liliana's Caress have not and will never be good.

Running yourself out of cards isn't even all that big a deal in Legacy given that Brainstorm, Ponder, and Top are all legal and all allow you to live off the top of your library effectively.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. Megrim was briefly good with Memory Jar for the space of, like, one tournament.

If it was a 2/1 creature it would be good.

I don't think Waste Not will be particularly effective in Legacy, but from what I can tell it looks like it might be pretty powerful in Modern's 8Rack deck.

Waste not is just another card in a long line of pox cards that are great early game, and terrible when you're both hellbent, which should is usually around turn 4... I don't think pox needs more cards like this. 4 dark rituals, 10-12 discard spells and 4 waste not is a ton of dead draws.
