That Yetti is pretty sick, I thought about it already. Any reason why Blood Moon is not allowed?

I considered it! It is probably the single card that most defines me as a player. I also have 8 copies (4 MM Foil and 4 The Dark). The Dark copies are just sitting in my binder...

I did not include it because the pool will only have about 18-20 nonbasic lands in it.

    Lands

    Karakas
    Urborg
    Hammerheim
    Pendelhaven
    4 Mishra's Factory
    3 Strip Mine
    4 City of Brass
    City of Shadows
    Safe Haven
    Maze of Ith

I will never be able to afford Beta dual lands. Plus I do not want to dedicate a disproportionate amount of cube space to nonbasic lands.
So if Blood Moon would be included, it would be a single copy. Right now, I do not see it making the cut...

It would be neat to include a copy of Island of Wak-Wak though. And maybe an Arabian Nights Mountain for giggles.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

I found 27 Artifacts I'm happy to include. For those following at home, that leaves 2 empty slots in the cube. I'm comfortable with that for now since I'm still just figuring out what I want the pool to include.

    0 CMC (2)
    2 Ornithopter

    1 CMC (3)
    Black Vise
    The Rack
    Ivory Tower

    2 CMC (2)
    2 Fellwar Stone

    3 CMC (5)
    2 Standing Stones
    Celestial Prism
    Disrupting Scepter
    Jalum Tome

    4 CMC (12)
    Icy Manipulator
    Jayemdae Tome
    Juggernaut
    Nevinyrral's Disk
    Rod of Ruin
    Clay Statue
    Cursed Rack
    Mightstone
    Primal Clay
    Tawnos's Wand
    Flying Carpet
    Triassic Egg

    5 CMC (1)
    The Hive

    6 CMC (2)
    Shapeshifter
    Triskelion

    Only and left to go!!

Good luck with your project, I'm pretty sure you'll be proud once you're done. Make sure you post some pics here

Needs more Su-Chi! So good, 4/4 for 4, but super dangerous if you play with mana burn (play modern rules with mana burn, sooooo much better).

Are you determined to only go black bordered? If you are, only Alpha/Beta or will you do Collector's Edition? If you go CE, just buy an opened box and BB the shit out of it. If it's sleeved, no one will care, and it will give you the old school feeling. Personally, UNL 4 lyfe, but to each their own ;)

Thank you! I certainly will. I actually took some photos of the cards I had available, but now that I actually am figuring out which cards I want a lot of them aren't making the cut. Once I finish blue and white, I'll post the cards I currently have.

I'm getting my sell list together for SCG and hope to fill out the bulk of what I still need with the credit I'll get!

I am! But realistically I will have some white bordered cards for a while... I've mentally accepted that Revised edition will suffice for some of the more expensive cards (WoG, Larry Niven's Disk, BoP...). Fortunately the price of those cards in Revised is very reasonable.

Once I have decided on 360 cards, and have obtained a copy of each of those cards, the true testing will begin. Player feedback will help sculpt the cube from there.

    Any suggested changes?
After looking through white, I think another Enchantress could be fun.
Green definitely has a very controllish feel if you look at the pool all together.
But there's a bit of weenie aggro, ramp & fattie, and control elements...

Building blue as a defensive color would help. Serpents are pretty good blockers in these sets since there's not a lot that can tangle with them and survive.

Do you want your Cube to have archetypes? One thing I like in Cubes is the presence of build-arounds and two-color archetypes since it gives you more to do than simply taking the best card in whatever color(s) you're in. If that's the case, then a durdly WU Enchantress deck or a controlling, UB card-advantage machine would both benefit from beefy blue guys with some variant of Islandhome. A controlling UG deck would also be viable, using large creatures to make attacking unprofitable while blue fliers and Craw Wurms crush the opposition.

    Yes!
Archetypes make the drafting process more fun too. Thank you for reminding me of this!

    With that in mind...
My next step will be to go through the cards I've selected and tweak the lists so there are some archetypes and build around cards.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

When I was originally selecting the gold portion of the cube, my only concern was an even spread across the colors. Now I have more of a focus...

Cards that are enticing enough to build around:
    Gwendlyn Di Corci
    Hazezon Tamar
    Jacques le Vert
    Johan
    Sol'kanar the Swamp King

Cards that reward you for going 2+ colors:
    Adun Oakenshield
    Axelrod Gunnarson
    Boris Devilboon
    Dakkon Blackblade
    Gosta Dirk
    Lady Caleria
    Livonya Silone
    Lord Magnus
    Nebuchadnezzar
    Ragnar
    Rasputin Dreamweaver
    Stangg
    Tor Wauki
    Ur-Drago
    Xira Arien

So here are the multicolored cards that I would like to include:

    Rakdos (4)
    Axelrod Gunnarson
    Boris Devilboon
    Lady Orca
    Tor Wauki

    Azorious (3)
    Gosta Dirk
    Kasimir the Lone Wolf
    Rasputin Dreamweaver

    Selesnya (4)
    Jasmine Boreal
    Lady Caleria
    Lord Magnus
    Sir Shandlar of Eberyn

    Gruul (4)
    Jerrard of the Closed Fist
    Livonya Silone
    Stangg
    Sunastian Falconer

    Dimir (4)
    Nebuchadnezzar
    Ramirez DePietro
    Ramses Overdark
    Ur-Drago

    Jund (2)
    Adun Oakenshield
    Xira Arien

    Esper (2)
    Dakkon Blackblade
    Halfdane

    Grixis (2)
    Gwendlyn Di Corci
    Sol'kanar the Swamp King

    Naya (3)
    Jacques le Vert
    Johan
    Hazezon Tamar

    Bant (2)
    Ragnar
    Rubinia Soulsinger

Plus these from The Dark: (3)
    Dark Heart of the Wood
    Marsh Goblins
    Scarwood Goblins

Not an enormous difference, but the total number of multicolored has dropped to 33, so that is 5 more cards for the other areas!

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

    Revisiting

I want mono red to be viable as Sligh. Although there is a gaping hole in the early sets at CMC2 for red creatures...
Goblins is an archetype. I also want to encourage mixing red/green as well as red/black. For those daring enough, I want to make a land destruction archetype across those 3 colors. I also want a Zooish style deck possible across red, green, and white.
I want to encourage red/blue CounterBurn and red/green aggro. Red and black already go hand in hand in many ways.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

When in green, you simply cannot miss this "iconic" creature:

I mean, it's a 4/4 for five, and it sports one and only colored symbol. It's not worse than Craw Wurm, imao, and it's the only creature of its quality that has its very own nickname in our lgs being called Prase Prase (yep, Pig Pig) for its... well.. umm.. for its overall pigness. (And its equal p&t, of course.) If any Green Bea(s)ts archetypes can exist without Durkwood Boars, I never heard about it.

Mono black should be discard, kill spells, and large threats.
Zombie archetype is there, but a cheat sheet is needed to identify most of the zombie creatures...
Hopefully blue/black card advantage will be possible, although most of the card advantage will come from discard and Greed rather than draw spells.

I increased the mana ramp and fatties to make Ramp & Fattie more viable.
I added a 2nd (edit: 3rd!) Enchantress to make that more of an archetype.
