Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

Okay, so I pseudo-drafted a few times and quickly realized the vanilla multi-colored Legends need to go!

I also discovered Fallen Empires was released in November of 1994 and therefore would qualify for inclusion if this is a 93/94 Cube. Initially I cut off at The Dark because every set after The Dark includes a 2nd line of copywrite info. I realize that is about as arbitrary as Modern's 'new frame' cut off, but I had to make a cut somewhere to begin the project.

I looked through the Fallen Empires set. There's definitely a few cards that would be fun to play with. FE makes Merfolk a playable tribe, but I really do not want to afford a BB LoA...

I'm almost through what will be my last 'Sell List' to SCG! It's all the rares, uncommons, and foils I won't use but couldn't part with until now... I'm hopeful it will give me another $300-$400 to throw at this project.

I'm also pretty sure I owe everyone more photos...

You should consider Collectors Edition for this cube. My experience in pseudo-drafting it is that you always need to go into 2 colors but you never have any mana fixing. The only way to BB your duals on the cheap is with CE which is perfectly fine for a cube like this.
Fun idea though and interesting to draft. I think it would be better with 2x of each dual though.
EDIT: Or to go Ice Age for painlands.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

I've been mulling it over and will stick with Beta - The Dark for now. I'll re-evaluate after this thing has actually been used a few times.

    mini1337s: Thanks for the input!
Collectors Edition would definitely work to get some black bordered duals in there, but it is hard for me to justify paying real money for proxies, even if they were WotC sponsered proxies. And for what little it counts for, my goal is to make a cube with 100% real cards so I have the option to get the cube drafts sanctioned.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

I've been busy going through the card choices I previously made and psuedo-drafted a few times thanks to Philipp2293.

I've got way too many multicolor crap/filler cards. I believe I will drop from 33 multicolor to around 21.
I would like to replace most of these multicolor cards with artifacts. I think having the option for someone to mostly draft artifacts and splash a support color is a good idea.

Anyways, OP is updated but here is the changelog:

I will further update Multicolored, Artifacts, and Lands when I've gone through those. Lands will largely be unchanged, although I will probably lose Island of Wak-Wak. Hopefully most of the awful multicolored cards become artifacts instead.

    --------
Edit: I made my Multicolor cuts and upped the Artifact count. OP has been updated.
I also added 1 additional card to each color. They are:

    Blood of the Martyr
    Telekinesis
    Simulacrum
    Goblin Wizard
    Singing Tree

I also realized Backfire doesn't really do anything, and swapped it for Force Spike.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

A SP Juzam Djinn and $250 worth of other cards are on their way to me! I am rapidly approaching the point where this cube is playable.

Of course all this progress comes at a price...
Rest in Peace my nearly foil Burn deck and my nearly foil Shattergang Brothers EDH.

Just put in another order. When it arrives I will only need to find a Sage of Lat-Nam and an Oubliette. Then the fun can begin.

I still have a ton of Revised cards I will need to Beta over time, but I'm good with that.

My LGS had the last two cards I needed to make the cube playable! I am finally at 100%.
I still have 48 Revised cards I will need to Beta over time. And about half of my basic lands need to be upgraded to Beta.

Re: Cube: Beta - The Dark

I had the most fun playing Magic in a while Thursday night. I was finally able to fire off a cube draft.

Before the draft I had made the following changes:

    + Balance
    + Cleansing
    + Island Sanctuary
    + Exorcist
    + Juxtapose
    + Stasis
    + Yotian Soldier

    - Piety
    - Crusade
    - Savannah Lion
    - Spirit Link
    - Merfolk of the Pearl Trident
    - Power Sink
    - Mightstone

I could tell the group had a good time drafting.
I did not get any photos while the games were being played, but I collected the cards back 'as decks' and got the shots below afterward. Four of the decks (the top 4) had 40 cards. The others didn't... I'm sure there's a lesson there.

    First place!

Second place. This was my deck.

    Third/Fourth

White was under-drafted, so some adjustments are needed. Red and Green were popular despite their absence in the above photos. A lot of the multicolor Legends can be cut to make room for more artifacts.

I will be making the following changes:

    White
    - Lance
    - Samite Healer
    - Petra Sphinx
    - Army of Allah
    - Alabaster Potion

    + Tundra Wolves
    + Thunder Spirit
    + Swords to Plowshares
    + Disenchant
    + TBD

    Red
    - Goblin Shrine
    - Mons's Goblin Raiders

    + Lightning Bolt
    + Goblin Hero

    Green
    - Willow Satyr

    + TBD

    Multicolor
    - Dark Heart of the Wood
    - Scarwood Goblins
    - Ramses Overdark
    - Sunastian Falconer
    - Tor Wauki
    - Ragnar
    - Johan

    + Rubinia Soulsinger

    Artifact
    - 2 Standing Stones
    - Cursed Rack

    + Meekstone
    + Millstone
    + Winter Orb
    + Marble Priest
    + Stone Calendar
    + Book of Rass
    + Ornithopter
    + Scarecrow

I have one other card I need to replace but I'm not sure if it will be an artifact or a land...

Glad to see you had fun. Good job on pioneering this format, is it possible to keep the OP up to date if it's not too much asked?

Certainly! The OP has been updated.

The last 3 cards I was contemplating will be:

    + Serra Angel
    + Tranquility
    + Desert

Unfortunately so much of White in the 93/94 card pool is dedicated to color protection...
Hopefully I found a good balance.

    Thank you!

The physical cards are now updated and shuffled into packs.
Hopefully I get to fire this off again soon.

Philadelphia area. Southeastern PA is probably a better term.
Generally if I am headed in to Philly (for Legacy), I leave the cube at home. Too many eggs in one basket.

It is more likely to get some use at my LGS in West Chester, which is actually about the same distance from Catasauqua as Philly.
I'm hoping to get another cube draft to fire off soon! That should mean more pictures.

I got to fire off the 93/94 cube again!
Got some in-game shots. Two other Sourcers participated; kingsey and btm10 (it is extremely likely more also have an account here, but I'm not aware of their member name).

Also an update for the change log:

    -1 Safe Haven
    +1 Strip Mine

It was a blast to play. Thanks again! Erg Raiders was way too good, except against Icy Manipulator.
