Thread: Shattering Spree, Etched Champion, and Metalcraft

Shattering Spree, Etched Champion, and Metalcraft

    Shattering Spree
    Etched Champion

Say the owner of the Champion controls 4 artifacts.

Is there any way to put Shattering Spree and its copies on the stack so that you can destroy enough artifacts to turn off metalcraft and then also destroy the Champion?

I say no, because you cannot initially target the Champion with the spree or any of the copies.

You are correct, the copies (and even the original spell) each go on the stack and need a legal target at that time (while Champion still has Metalcraft).

The copies copy the original targeting of the spell, and will continue to target the original target even if the original target became illegal in between the spell with replicate being played and the replicate trigger resolving. You may be thinking of targeted triggered abilties, which do require that they have a legal target when they go on the stack (or they're immediately removed from the stack, ala Sea Drake and one land.)

However, you can't change a target to an illegal target, so in this case there's no way to ever target the Etched Champion.
“It's possible. But it involves... {checks archives} Nature's Revolt, Opalescence, two Unstable Shapeshifters (one of which started as a Doppelganger), a Tide, an animated land, a creature with Fading, a Silver Wyvern, some way to get a creature into play in response to stuff, some way to get a land into play in response to stuff (a different land from the animated land), and one heck of a Rube Goldberg timing diagram.”

Whoops, yeah, same result but I had the wrong wording for Replicate in my mind.
