I too find myself wondering how MUD would fare if it ever had that much meta penetration; but I also agree Shops looks objectively better. I don't think it matters why the deck saw so much play. Now that it has put up results people will continue to push and/or flock to it.
And I join you in the celebration of a strong Legacy deck that is more portable from Modern than we have ever seen before. Welcome to the good life, Modern folk!
