    Paper pauper high tide

    I'm guessing this is the proper place for this discussion.

    Our lgs has a casual night and they are tired of me playing certain decks so I'm going to play degeneratecommonsonly.dec

    I got the idea when I realized high tide was a common(completely forgot), did some research and came across this list.

    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/high-...-place-copy-2/

    This is my initial build for straight combo consistency, and is very likely to go off turn 2 with the right hand.

    But for longer games where I don't always have the best draws I really need some counterspells of sorts.

    I can't think of what to change because I often will use flicker generate mana and use the mancer to bring another draw spell or scroll back to dig for more combo pieces and eventually fall into another flicker(snap helps do this as well).

    I tried 16 lands like wong's build but kept getting no land hands, went up to 17, same deal and settled on 18.

    Capsize and gigadrouse seem to only be win more or with capsize I can bounce everything of theirs in case I fizzle but that's extremely unlikely.

    As for a sideboard I would like to have some options for a very open field.
    I normally face aggro.dec and occasionally a good deck or an opponent that knows how to use their deck.

    Possibility of facing graveyard based decks like dredge or oops is very low but if they show up I would like something but I don't think pauper has the right commons in a tutor capacity.

    Initial thoughts

    1 capsize
    1 gigadrouse
    4 beb/hb or flash flood would be fun
    X dispel
    X spell piece
    X echoing truth

    Not sure how crucial CoF is because I don't pauper, but I assume it is pretty important...

    If everyone else is playing Pauper (not just you), I'd check in advance how they feel about High Tide. My LGS does Paper Pauper, and have added High Tide, Hymn, and Sink Hole to their banned list. Those cards are pretty oppressive in Pauper.

    Like I said it's casual night, so I'm imposing a paper commons only rule for myself

    A more robust version (taking into account pauper banlist) (kills T4 on average)

    // 60 Maindeck
    // 22 Instant
    4 High Tide
    4 Psychic Puppetry
    1 Dampen Thought
    4 Peer Through Depths
    4 Reach Through Mists
    4 Brainstorm
    1 Oona's Grace

    // 18 Land
    18 Island

    // 20 Sorcery
    1 Petals of Insight
    4 Ideas Unbound
    4 Merchant Scroll
    4 Ponder
    4 Preordain
    3 Pieces of the Puzzle

    // 15 Sideboard
    // 10 Instant
    SB: 4 Snap
    SB: 3 Gigadrowse
    SB: 3 Dampen Thought

    // 5 Sorcery
    SB: 3 Deep Analysis
    SB: 1 Pieces of the Puzzle
    SB: 1 Petals of Insight

    No banned list

    Re: Paper pauper high tide

    So Ive better doing some testing and I can drop ideas unbound, only time I want to see it is during combo.

    I could go to 1 oona's grace and maybe drop a preordain.

    17 land still feels to light at times, opening hands are some times very sketchy.

    But there are times I get more lands than needed for some reason.

    But i have no clue as to what counter spells would be best to use.

    Force spike seems to be the best all around choice for a 1cmc spell that hits anything.

    Maybe 3 counterspell 1 force spike or spell pierce, but non creature spells are usually not a problem.

    I played a format we called "commonkill" with some friends many years ago, i dont know if pauper existed back then but we at least did not know of it.
    I have no idea what pauper looks like today and what the ban list is, but here is our old high tide list.

    Mana: 18
    18 Island

    Combo stuff: 14
    4 Cloud of faeries
    4 Frantic search
    4 High tide
    2 Snap

    Draw/Search: 24
    4 Ponder
    4 Impulse
    4 Merchant scroll
    4 Idea's unbound
    4 Deep analysis
    2 Flux
    1 Deja vu
    1 Tolarian winds

    Kill: 3
    2 Chromatic star
    1 Grapeshot

    Other: 1
    1 Gigadrowse

    Would probably cut the gigadrowse, wasn't very useful as i recall.
    There was no good common blue card for finishing the opponent back then, hence the red splash for a storm spell.
    Deck is brutally consistent and fast, wins turn 3 or 4 typically.

    This deck killed the format as we could not beat it consistently except with a land bounce "pirates" deck which could not beat anything else. Our format looked something like this as i recall:
    Mono white rebels
    Red aggro
    U/R Goblin storm
    Blue Affinity (With compulsive research)
    Mono black control
