MTG Essentials - Upgraded version of the MTG Basic Rulebook

    Hi

I've been working on a book containing everything there is to know about MTG since about 2012.

It was fun to make and lately i've made a complete new design for the rulebook.
The latest version of the document is available over here.

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/79zyh0fka...EkQRGJW1a?dl=0

The document is available in Word and PDF format and average about 127 pages.
It is as big as 300 megs because of the pictures.

It was made as an image of the Basic Rulebook offered by MTG. As a comparaison, the M14 Rulebook has 36 pages.

Are you sure there's no way to make it significantly lighter (are images appropriately resized before importing them into Word) ?

    Hi

    Thank you for the feedback.

Well i beleive today, size isnt a problem anymore so i'd rather keep as much quality as possible.

I was working with 300 dpi pictures into word but word was becoming unstable and the conversion to pdf was crashing so i had to downgrade to 200dpi at some point in time. I've also used the cropping system in word 2010

The conversion to pdf was set to no compression at all but for some reason it is bigger than the word document.....
I did accentaly used the compression to pdf and went to 30 megs.....could eventually offer a low res version in pdf format....

But like i said, nowadays, 300 megs is nothing...

Document has been updated and I've been able to find the proper settings to tone down the document size to 45 megs keeping it as is.

    Re: MTG Essentials

I'll definitely be looking at this later tonight. I plan on teaching some of my fifth graders how to play in the coming weeks, so this will be a good resource to reference. Thanks!

Re: MTG Essentials - Upgraded version of the MTG Basic Rulebook

    Hi
Great, thanks Jander, I tried to reply to my old post first but after a few refresh of my browser I didn't saw it showing up as the "newest thread", so I've figured it must have stayed way down that list where people would have never seen it even though I've made a new reply.... this is why I ended up making a new thread.

That's a nice though Kirkus, hope the kids enjoy the card game... Teacher you say? if you see typos or vocabulary stuff that's irritating you, let me know... but you really don't need to.... I've reread myself a couple of time so far through the years....I think it's fine... but I'm no typist...
Now I don't know about those kids financial situation, but I think one of the key point to address is that they don't need to invest a lot of money into MTG to enjoy the game....they can play pauper, drafting booster's together, give themselves limits among players so that you don't end up with few having all the better cards or worse having them spend their lunch money on this ;)

Overall, I think you'll find a lot of useful information in there as this is the knowledge that I would want to know about the game...

For information purpose, what I've created originated from making an exact copy of the WOTC basic rulebook (aka how to play) which I've evolve from by adding more to it....found everything that was useful on the web and added to it my own way.... and wrote some .... like a notebook....
WOTC did also evolve, they've made a couple of version such "https://www.wizards.com/magic/rules/EN_MTGM11_Rulebook_LR_Web.pdf" or that one "http://media.wizards.com/images/magic/resources/rules/EN_MTGM14_PrintedRulebook_LR.pdf" which is the strict minimum....

Wow, that must have been a lot of work. It looks good, great work.

My small contribuition is that you should use more iconic cards when talking about the archetypes in page 35 and 36.

How is Mana Leak a midrange card?
Your ramp cards don't actually have Rampant Growth or any ramp cards at all?
What the hell is Gravecrawler doing in the combo section?

Those card don't represent at all their respective archetypes. Just use really famous cards, that people will see and think "Oh I saw that card being played once in FNM/Pro Tour/SCG/Kitchen table!".

    Hehe :o maybe I've edited...

Sure Alderon666, what do you have in mind for the Archetypes cards?

I tried to stick around Innistrad at the time when choosing cards and Mana leak felt the closest to Counterspell as in term of early blue control

Yes, this took years.... constantly making some small changes from time to time...
