Thread: UW Gideon Control

    UW Gideon Control

    3 Snapcaster Mage
    2 Vendilion Clique

    4 Brainstorm
    4 Ponder
    4 Swords to Plowshares
    4 Supreme Verdict
    4 Force of Will
    2 Counterspell
    1 Spell Snare
    1 Spell Pierce
    1 Council's Judgement

    2 Back To Basics

    3 Gideon of Trials
    2 Gideon, ally of Zendikar
    2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor

    4 Island
    2 Plains
    3 Tundra
    1 Karakas
    4 Flooded Strand
    4 Polluted Delta
    3 Arid Mesa

    SB:
    2 Surgical Extraction
    1 Hydroblast
    2 Pithing Needle
    2 Monastery Mentor
    2 Disenchant
    1 Ethersworn Canonist
    1 Containment Priest
    1 Wing Shards
    1 Cursed Totem
    2 Flusterstorm

Ive been toying with this list for a few weeks and twerking it. Recently saw this one made a fair result on MTGO http://tcdecks.net/deck.php?id=25050&iddeck=196608. I think the deck has some potential but needs more tuning.

The interaction between gideons (when transformed into creatures) with karakas is worth mentioning, since you can use it either to protect it (from STP or any edict effect) or for using it twice each turn (attack, bounce, cast again and use another ability).

Playing a more generic UW Control list with the a pair of Gideon in the SB instead. Other differences are TNN for Clique, FoF/B2B for other PWs and Pierce for Flusterstorm. My SB is basically the same. Back to Basics seems way too good to not play MD against non-Burn, non-Dredge decks.

Finally swapped the 2 blessed alliance for 2 back to basics (and adding 2 monastery mentors on the SB) and managed to do 4-1 on my LGS, beating Grixis control, 4c Leovold, Burn and Infect, losing only to elves.
Back to basics was a total blast and wouldnt move it from the maindeck. Elves is a tough matchup and i think ill dedicate more SB space for it, probably considering cursed totem as well as containment and canonist.
Overall, the deck has been doing pretty well, i thought the mana would be a problem (since you constantly need double white for gideon/verdicts and double blue for counterspell/jace/clique), but it ran pretty smoothly all day.

Glad you like the extra B2B. They're backbreaking in quite a few matches.

Engineered Explosives is something to consider against Elves, a little less narrow than Cursed Totem. You could even play a copy main; it's a nice catch-all.

Post Eternal Weekend, I would imagine one B2B in the MD. B2B is a card for fair MU anyway, I would assume I'm playing against a fair MU game one.

Is it possible to -1 Verdict +1 Terminus. While Verdict is absolute trump card against Delver decks. It's pretty horrible against Vial decks like DnT due to Port. DnT also has Taxing creatures.

Eh, I'm not worried about not being able to cast Verdict against D&T because you can ignore Wasteland, only have one Thalia out, and their clock is anemic. To be fair, though, I have not played the matchup with this deck.

Actually, the deck is doing pretty well its controling job, but i think its main problem is lacking the ability to close games quickly when needed. Sometimes something as silly as an opposing swords to plowshares (or the posibility of one) can get us to do draw-go for a lot of turns, and even if we manage to still control the board (which is often the case), closing takes a lot of time.

That being said, i had to think of some option to finish the game with haste and at the same times dies at our mainly board controling plan which is supreme verdict. The main one that came to mind is a 2x Luminarch Ascension, which, although it takes long to be active, is not something really hard to do since we are staring at a big quantity of draw-gos every game. Another one. probably more sensible, is Monastery Mentor, but it really makes you think twice every time you have to cast a supreme verdict.
    Thoughts?

Myth Realized seems like a better option than Luminarch Ascension. Still suffers the problem of dying to Swords to Plowshares or other spot removal, but plays well with Supreme Verdict and is very reasonably costed.
