    Deadeye Deathrite (Delver?)

    When I saw Deadeye Tracker spoiled, I immediately wondered if it was a strong enough one drop to have legs in Legacy, so I've finally gotten around to putting together a few ideas for testing it out, even though I have no legacy scene whatsoever anymore to test it in. On one hand, a one drop with an ability that either provides selection or draws a card is appealing. On the other hand, a one mana 1/1 is unexciting, two mana for an activated ability can be a lot to ask, and it gives your opponent information. The first few ideas I've had for it are pretty straightforward:

    Boring slot-in to UBg midrange/stuff:
    Deck: UBg Deadeye Deathrite

    //Lands
    2 Bayou
    2 Island
    3 Misty Rainforest
    4 Polluted Delta
    2 Swamp
    4 Underground Sea
    3 Verdant Catacombs

    //Artifacts
    1 Umezawa's Jitte

    //Instants
    2 Abrupt Decay
    4 Brainstorm
    1 Counterspell
    4 Daze
    4 Fatal Push
    4 Force of Will
    1 Spell Pierce

    //Sorceries
    4 Ponder

    //Planeswalkers
    2 Liliana of the Veil

    //Creatures
    2 Baleful Strix
    4 Deadeye Tracker
    4 Deathrite Shaman
    2 Snapcaster Mage
    1 True-Name Nemesis

    //Sideboard
    1 Abrupt Decay
    2 Back to Basics
    1 Dread of Night
    2 Flusterstorm
    1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
    1 Liliana, the Last Hope
    1 Surgical Extraction
    2 Thing in the Ice
    1 Thoughtseize
    2 Tormod's Crypt
    1 Toxic Deluge

    It's a pretty quick and dirty list, but the basic idea is just to get a few creatures down, use liliana to fuel graveyards and the one-drops to take advantage of them, and let TNN and Jitte do some finishing work where the one-drops don't. It's probable the deck would have trouble closing games, especially against all of the Young Pyromancers and Leovold/Goyf decks running around, but in theory a big enough deadeye tracker and timely counters and removal counters could get the deck there. The sideboard is nothing too spicy outside of B2B and TiTi to try and shore up the matchups with the established 3c and 4c midrange goodstuff decks.

    More aggressive (and somewhat nonconventional) Delver version:
    Deck: UBg Deadeye Deathrite Delver

    //Lands
    1 Bayou
    3 Misty Rainforest
    4 Polluted Delta
    4 Underground Sea
    4 Verdant Catacombs
    4 Wasteland

    //Instants
    2 Abrupt Decay
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Daze
    4 Fatal Push
    4 Force of Will
    4 Predict
    1 Spell Pierce
    4 Stifle

    //Creatures
    4 Deadeye Tracker
    4 Deathrite Shaman
    4 Delver of Secrets
    1 True-Name Nemesis

    //Sideboard
    1 Abrupt Decay
    1 Dread of Night
    2 Flusterstorm
    2 Inquisition of Kozilek
    1 Liliana, the Last Hope
    1 Surgical Extraction
    1 Sylvan Library
    2 Thing in the Ice
    1 Thoughtseize
    2 Tormod's Crypt
    1 Toxic Deluge

    This version is based heavily on the idea that the deck plays a one drop on turn one and then holds up mana to protect it and activate abilities for as long as it can, similar to old RUG delver. Predict over ponder is probably bad, but it's a neat idea as far as holding up mana t2 is concerned. It's possible that Bayou should be Tropical Island for daze, and I'm sure there are other small adjustments that could be made. It's possible that the deck's threats just aren't strong enough across the board to close the game out fast enough on their own. The sideboard only has minor changes to account for a more aggressive gameplan and the lack of basics.

    Other places I thought about using it but haven't put together any lists yet: A more controlling deck with or without a Reanimator package, using Deadeye Tracker and JVP to stock the graveyard and then bringing back a fatty with strong counterspell backup. A discard and removal heavy smallpox-ish list where Deadeye makes situations where LotV has put both players hellbent more advantageous. A Nic Fit list that basically just finds room for it and tries it out.

    Has anyone else messed around with Deadeye Tracker and found out how it looks in practice? Are these lists and ideas way off base or is there merit to some of these ideas?

    Re: Deadeye Deathrite (Delver?)

    What exactly are you trying to explore into with this card. If the goal is to put lands in hand -> Loam. If the goal is to follow some pathway of lands to hand -> shuffle them away for real cards -> Sylvan Library.

    I think at some point you just play better cards and UBg Death's Shadow...until such a time as you have a reason to control the top card of your library (Vengeful Pharoah, Predict, GY synergies, etc). Maybe if this guy is getting haste from a card like Anger, but until then you're playing right into every SCM/StP or SCM/Fatal Push deck in legacy. If anyone runs a cube, this Deadeye Tracker is a way more cool card to have in there than DRS I guess.

    In your Predict build, how is this 1/1 going to outperform say Mirri's Guile, or Search for Azcanta/Sylvan Library, or even Sultai Ascendancy?

    Deadeye Tracker's ability needed to cost 0 mana to be Legacy viable, unfortunately.

    Re: Deadeye Deathrite (Delver?)

    I mostly wanted to see if repeatable explore was useful enough on it’s own. 4 copies in either list is probably too many, but I want to see if it would be enough if opponents save removal for deathrite or if it was good as a lightning rod that sometimes gets more value or eventually can become a threat. The cost is probably too high to play it without a specific synergy, but I feel it’s worth trying this to get a baseline for how realistic activating Deadeye is and whether it’s worth in situations where you don’t have everything set up. Odds are there are too many hurdles for the card, but it might be fun to try.
