A Legacy GP in a few weeks, nice.
I have to say, I just went to register, and $70 entry for a $10 Mutavault and a nothing CFB deck box, lifepad, and pen? It's been a while since I've played in a GP, but is that price the new normal? At my last one, I believe it was $50 entry, and we got the Brainstorm playmat, sleeves, and stuff that you can sell for $50 or so, plus the $20 Batterskull. Take me out to dinner before you fuck me, WotC and CFB.
Ill be there - should be a lot of fun!
I'm not sure if it is anymore, but SCG infinite side event badges were sick. Go play a 4 round event at Ten. Do well? Great get solid prizes. Go grab lunch. Come back and jump into another one, maybe a different deck if you feel like it, do bad? No big deal. Clean slate for the last one of the day and try again. Repeat tomorrow. Maybe change up the format. I don't know if CFB still does it though. One weekend I spent a hundred bucks for the badge, played magic for basically 3 days, got to try my bomberman deck out as well as some other stuff and walk away with a little over a hundred bucks worth of stuff. Had a great time, never was frustrated at losing, didn't have to worry about dropping seventy bucks to just 0-3 drop and be salty
Let me just say that to get into the money at GP you pretty much have to go 11-3-1 and better. 11-4s get into money at smaller GPs hovering around 1k players. These are pretty beastly records, especially without byes. If you are a cut throat shark then yes I'd recommend the GP, jsut becasue you Will probably like playing with other cutthroar players. Will you get into the "money"? Statistically looking not really and even if you do it will most likely be 250$. I don't know about you but my total GP costs start at 400$ as a bare minimum and usually end up in 500$. so yea, you are not getting rich attending the GP.
Spending 70$ just to drop at 0-3 and have nothing to show for other than that 10$ Mutavault is pretty insulting.
If you take the 80$ (or something similar) unlimited constructed side events means you get to play shit ton of magic, maybe test out new decks, try out new formats, no pressure, in general no cuttrhout sharks and if you are rather average you should "grind out" at elast a box, but that would mean a rather average to subpar overeall record. If you are somehow decent and paly lots of double prize events you should go home with a couple of boxes and a positive balance (I knew a guy who went home with like 9 boxes of dominaria).
So yea, GP main events pretty much lost their charms and with the CFB's fucking disgusting monopolistic 70$ entry fee all I can say is well played LSV, well played.
Playing in the main event is about the glory. It's about making day two. It's about walking away with a good enough record to prove that your deck choice was a good one. It's about proving to yourself that you're either lucky, skilled, or both.
The side events have always been better EV than the main event. If you're looking to make profit, then sure. But if you're looking to make profit, why aren't you playing Poker instead?
I rarely have the opportunity to go to a Legacy Grand Prix, they are rare in Europe and tend to collide with work interests (always something that just has to be done just that weekend). However I love the concept of competing with more than a thousand other players in a very competitive event, and meeting people from all over the continent, or world even, that share my passion and hobby. I can imagine that getting a place to house all these players and pay for judges and other personnel, including travel costs, is going to cost a lot of money for the tournament organizer. Are they really making great benefits on this? I have no clue. For potentially 2 days of entertainment at this level I think you can expect to have to pay some money. It's not like there's an entrance fee to pay for these things.
With that said, of course it would be good if they can offer competitive prices to make the effort seem worthwile. If you enjoy side-events that's great, but I would feel like I was missing out on an interesting experience if skipping the main event.
I'm fine with glory. I hate most of the grinder barnacle turds that are "cut throat" (code for douches, cheaters, and overall shit people often) that I would encounter at the top tables of a Grand Prix. Also an event simply exacerbates the whole Play Brainstorm or get fucked issue that legacy has
GP main events are terrible EV but I've made a net profit on side events on like the last 4 GPs I've been to
At this point it's only worth playing the main event if you really don't care about the entry fee or you value the PT invite very highly
I love going to GP's. Richmond will be my 4th GP. Columbus 2016 was a MASSIVE profit for me, both in trading and winning. Sure, I don't do as well as I'd like in mains, but those aren' the reason you go. Play in the main, for the experience of ACTUAL tournament Magic. Go for the sides. That's where all the bacon is, baby.
The cardinal rule of GP's: No matter what's on your plate, EAT YOUR VEGETABLES.
(Meaning play ALL of the sides you can, especially if they announce 2HG Legacy...that shit is AWESOME)
Remember that time you left for a few days and your girl stayed behind?
I kept her company.
Thanks for the heads up. I checked the options and I'm pretty tempted by the option in the picture, although I'll probably just go and do a few Legacy side events. It looks like side events are $20 a pop, or $35 for the ones with double the prize pool. I wonder if the double prize events are part of the 6 side events you get.
I really don't care about the prizes or extra goodies; I just like to play in a big cool tournament and have the hope of getting my deck published. $70 is just too much for that, and I can get a lesser effect from $15 tournaments. I'm in no way looking to make money and the swag doesn't matter to me, apart from it being kind of cool and feeling like I'm making some of my (over)payment back.
If glory is your thing then go for it. I prefer classics and such at this point. Smaller events, and not two day events. I used to play every legacy Sunday open I could attend until they changed to 2 day events. I really just hate committing two days to a single event honestly.
The last GP I played in was GP Louisville (Jan 2017 I think), where I went 11-4 with R/u Sligh. I was simply explaining why someone would want to play in the main event of a GP. Making Top 8 is unlikely, but it would be living the dream.
I agree about the toxic feeling at the top tables of large events. I made Top 8 at the US Eternal Weekend last year, and although winning matches with a rogue deck I built was awesome, the cutthroat nature of my opponent's was very uncomfortable.
I haven't played Legacy in a while, but I would certainly play a deck with Brainstorm at a large event. I love blue though.
