    What happened to foils?

The foils in Modern Horizons hardly have any foil gloss. Some of the cards I ordered looked as though they didn't have a foil finish until I looked very carefully. Has anyone else noticed this?

yeah, i just got a foil force of vigor and comparing it to other set foils it does seem harder to notice it is foiled.
the thin outer color border and larger black bottom border all play a part in that.

Where about are you guys? Because over here I haven't had that issue. My copy of Hall arived today and it impressed my wife. That's rare.
It is better to ask and look stupid then keep your mouth shut and remain so.

I'm in Netherlands, so I assume we're getting Cartamundi cards from the Belgium factory. I also have a Hall of Heliod's Generosity and a Force of Vigor, so I'll post some of my foils here. Can you post your modern horizons foils here too? I'm getting a few more incoming which I'll post once they arrive.

Everything you see is foil, in case you didn't see it :/

I noticed it too, the snow covered basics are the only ones that I have seen that look impressive, otherwise from what I have seen cards don't look foiled outside of the parts where there are extreme highlights in the art/ border. Even with just a penny sleeve on it is hard to tell with some that they are foiled.

    Re: What happened to foils?

I haven't handled many foils from the set but I have noticed it a little bit.
For example I have foil and nonfoil cave of temptations in a pauper deck (waiting for the last foil one) and I have to look very closely at the cards and angle them in the light to even tell which is which (at least when they are sleeved).
The foil weather the storm I have is much more obvious, perhaps because the artwork of that card is generally lighter and the 'lightning streaks' pick up the foil treatment in a more noticeable way

    Re: What happened to foils?

    The changes I have noticed:

    * The cardstock is thinner / not as sturdy
    * The foil coating layer is thinner and less noticeable compared to older foils
    * Curling is reduced, but so is the foil sheen
    * They have not designed a separate layer with transparent spots which is normally used to highlight certain parts of the card with a foil sheen. You can see this on the Shenanigans I posted above

Had I known this, I would not have spent my money on the foil multipliers because there is hardly a way to distinguish them from their cheap non-foil counterparts. I cannot believe they would mess with this on a complimentary set designed for eternal, where you know the power level will be crazy high and the demand for premium cards is at its highest.

How could we have gone from the beautiful shooting star foils of Urza's Destiny and Legacy, Mercadian Masques and 7th Edition, to years of curling foils, From the Vault Vertical Foils, and now Modern Horizons non-foil foils? It is evident to me that WOTC is lead by operations leadership and not by design leadership, which has also happened to Apple and has caused Jony Ive to leave the firm due to the focus on software over hardware, the way WOTC focuses almost exclusively on digital with MTG Arena, the new movie, etc.

I'll post my final foil purchases for Modern Horizons here and some preorders of Core2020 as well, so that we can see if the same issues persist in Core2020. If so, I will stop collecting new foils and limit myself only to shooting star foils. I added the picture below to show how far we have departed in terms of quality.

Foils have been so naff for so long I'm kinda surprised people still bother with them. Only nice foil I saw in recent years was a History of Benalia I cracked at pre-release and I flipped that ASAP before it curls up and becomes worthless.

Cost cutting in search of ever-greater profits. The same culprit behind curling cardstock and reduced event coverage.

Here are some of the other important cards. I don't have Urza, Plague Engineer or Force of Negation but you can probably find them online somewhere. The following ones are not as bad as the others but still you hardly see any foiling if you are going to sleeve them up.
