Thread: Obosh B'gosh

    Re: Obosh B'gosh

    This is something I've been working on. I've been trying to break Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow in legacy since the card came up. I've been testing it with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn nearly since it's release. (You can find my page on another page.) and recently, people have been toying with the same design. So this is what I've been working on.

    Companion:
    1 Obosh, the Preypiercer

    Creatures:
    4 Changeling Outcast
    2 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
    4 Mothdust Changeling
    3 Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow

    Artifacts:
    4 Retrofitter Foundry

    Instant:
    4 Brainstorm
    2 Force of Negation
    4 Force of Will
    2 Swords to Plowshares

    Sorcery:
    2 Show and Tell
    4 Ponder

    Planeswalker:
    2 Teferi, Time Raveler

    I need to replace:
    3 Baleful Strix
    2 Ingenious Infiltrator

    Due to them being even CMC.

    Then there's lands, mine are pretty budget, I can't really afford Underground Sea. I've been mostly playing basics with lots of fetches.

    One neat interaction between Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow, and Obosh, the Preypiercer is that not only does she deal 2 damage, instead of 1, her effect also is doubled. So if you top a FoW, you're hitting for 10. That also counts for all your other creatures getting hits as well. (I believe? I could be wrong. xD) Which makes most swings with Obosh, the Preypiercer out, dangerously lethal.

    Are you sure this is right? Yuriko causes life loss, not damage. Obosh only doubles damage. I think they don't work together. Your deck might be better without Obosh.

    But you do bring up a good idea of just playing blue value cards. So many of them are odd cc.

    I think he means Yuriko deals damage, then its ability causes life loss, then it deals damage AGAIN due to Obosh, so then its ability causes additional life loss. I think it works the same with double strike? Obosh effectively quadruples the power of doublestrike creatures.

    That's not how it works though, I don't think. Obosh doesn't cause anything to deal damage twice. So you wouldn't get double triggers from one damage event. Obosh is a replacement effect, so there is only one event just with twice as much damage.

    Edit: Ninja'd by H
    On a Ninja deck. Ouch. G2 SB?

    Example:
    Yuriko attacks unblocked when you have Obosh out.
    Yuriko deals 1x2=2 combat damage (doubled by Obosh replacement effect)
    Yuriko triggers once. Reveal Force of Will, draw it and opponent loses 5 life (not doubled by Obosh)

    With Obosh: opponent takes 7 total
    Without Obosh: opponent takes 6 total

    Obosh only adds 1 damage.

    Obosh made it to modern now at least - again not legacy, but the higher power level in Modern argues that Obosh beats does have some potential. The list was:

    https://magic.wizards.com/en/article...gue-2020-04-28 by MACROCOSMOS

    In modern the idea was very simple like in pioneer:

    Turn 1 - Land + Mana Dork
    Turn 2 - Land + 3 CMC threat
    Turn 3 - Land + 3 CMC threat + Mana Dork
    Turn 4 - 5 CMC Threat/Obosh

    In legacy the idea could be accelerated:

    Turn 1 - Land + Mana Dork
    Turn 2 - Sol Land + Accel + 5 CMC threat
    Turn 3 - Land/Accel + 5 CMC threat
    Turn 4 - [Accel] -> Obosh

    The smart thing to do is to think of all the best 5 CMC threats and just work on that (turn 2 Reality Smasher threatening Turn 3 Obosh sounds ugly) . . . but a stupid but potentially fun route would be to run:

    God Eternal Rhonas
    Grothama, All-Devouring
    Phyrexian Hydra
    Putrefax

    Which, depending the order you cast with Obosh could have you attacking for lethal by turn 3 each.

    It would be hilariously dumb, but fun.

    Re: Obosh B'gosh

    Do you need many 5 cmc threats? Obosh could be the 5 cmc threat. For the 3cmc slot, Legacy already has great options:
    Oko, Thief of Crowns
    Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath
    True-Name Nemesis
    Leovold, Emissary of Trest
    Plague Engineer
    Knight of the Reliquary
    Knight of Autumn
    Reclamation Sage
    Narset, Parter of Veils
    Ashiok, Dream Render

    You could also consider beatdown creatures like Steel-Leaf Champion and Bonecrusher Giant, but why not just play the better 3 cmc threats?

    Well, I initially considered Oko & TNN for Obosh, but slightly shifted due to the beatdown nature of the successful lists in other formats - in which the idea is not evasion creatures or creatures with protection, but big threats that Obosh makes bigger.

    Other formats don't have FoW, Brainstorm, Ponder, or TNN. They also have Oko and GSZ banned. I think if those cards were legal they would play them. They do Obosh beatdown because they don't have any better options.

    1UU for 6-power Progenitus seems good.
    Oko is good. 6/3 Astrolabes are good.
    Legacy rewards you for playing blue cards.

    Death's Shadow is also an option for Ux beatdown.

    I mean, again, this was sort of one of my initial suggestion but it was luke-warmly received. I agree, you know that I agree RE xerox snowko shells for these decks through our work theory crafting for breach and other decks.

    A potential starting death's shadow snow-ko obosh list:

    4 Brainstorm
    4 Ponder
    4 Force of Will
    4 Dark Ritual
    4 Thought Seize
    2 Veil of Summer
    2 Dismember
    1 Force of Negation

    2 OKO
    3 Astrolab

    2 TNN
    4 Street Wraith
    4 Death's Shadow

    4 Polluted Delta
    4 Watery Grave
    4 Wasteland
    2 Prismatic Vista
    1 Misty Rainforest
    1 Breeding Pool
    1 Overgrown Tomb
    1 Snow-Covered Forest
    1 Snow-Covered Swamp
    1 Snow-Covered Island

    -Companion
    1 Obosh, the Preypiercer

    Obosh is used just to allow Dark Ritual to threaten quick wins.

    maybe you could squeeze 1 plague engeenier and 1 phyrexian arena do use more dark ritual turn 1.
    Also 1 or 2 Gurmag could still do the job.

    Re: Obosh B'gosh

    If you go the Shadow route you don't even need Green for Oko.

    I was thinking of Oko in a UG shell with turn 1 Noble Hierarch as ramp. If Dark ritual is your ramp, then you probably want a black planeswalker like Liliana, the Last Hope, Liliana of the Veil or Ashiok, Dream Render. You could just play UB Shadow.

    //Spells: 27
    4 Force of Will
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Ponder
    4 Thoughtseize
    4 Dark Ritual
    2 Stubborn Denial
    2 Fatal Push
    2 Dismember
    1 Force of Negation

    //Creatures: 14
    4 Delver of Secrets
    4 Death's Shadow
    3 Street Wraith
    3 Gurmag Angler

    //Lands: 19
    4 Wasteland
    4 Polluted Delta
    2 Misty Rainforest
    1 Verdant Catacombs
    3 Watery Grave
    1 Underground Sea
    2 Snow-Covered Island
    2 Snow-Covered Swamp

    //Sideboard: 15
    1 Obosh, the Preypiercer
    2 Plague Engineer
    1 Dread of Night
    1 Spell Pierce
    1 Flusterstorm
    1 Force of Negation
    1 Grafdigger's Cage
    2 Surgical Extraction
    1 Ashiok, Dream Render
    1 Liliana, the Last Hope
    1 Phyrexian Arena
    1 Reanimate
    1 Murderous Cut

    Dark Ritual makes it a bit easier to hit 5 mana. Even if you never hit 5, it's not like you lost a card in hand for Obosh.
    Ritual can also help cast Angler, like old decks used to do with Tombstalker (3 mana + 1 card).

    The only splash that might be worth it is Red for Lightning Bolt (more answers to Lurrus & doubled damage) and Pyroblast in the SB.

    You'll be playing Temur or Sultai anyway to be able to cast Obosh if you're choosing to run UG for Oko though, the double black/red makes it hard to just splash for black or red without also running black or red cards MD.

    Right but those decks still want different directions if you build around a Hierarch/Uro plan instead of Dark Ritual.

    e.g.

    //Spells: 24
    4 Force of Will
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Ponder
    4 Thoughtseize
    3 Fatal Push
    2 Veil of Summer
    2 Green Sun's Zenith
    1 Dismember

    //Creatures: 10
    4 Noble Hierarch
    3 True-Name Nemesis
    2 Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath
    1 Leovold

    //Artifacts: 3
    3 Arcum's Astrolabe

    //Planeswalkers: 3
    3 Oko, Thief of Crowns

    //Lands: 20
    0 Wasteland

    The Dark Ritual plan looks better in just UB Shadow.

    Maybe with Defense Grids? You really don't want Grenade countered. That's the main reason it doesn't see play.

    Good point, need something odd cmc though so thoughtseize might be best to not get blown out.
