Thread: Sheltering Ancient upkeep

    Sheltering Ancient upkeep

    Sheltering ancient reads:

Cumulative upkeep-Put a +1/+1 counter on a creature an opponent controls. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

If my opponent controls no creatures, do I have to sacrifice the creature, as there are no creatures to target for the upkeep? Thanks.

This is Coldsnap. The FAQ is unneeded.

Yes your Ancient would die. Since there is no legal target for the cumulative upkeep, it cannot be paid, and therefore the Ancient goes to the bin.

Also, just to note: The ability does not target. So feel free to put those counters on your opponent's Mongoose.
