No more hot lands...

They're... Euroland Red set... which at the moment is the hardest to find... SSG is the only place I can find it listed for the moment... at $40 for the set. My usual haunts are out of it in singles form.

I pay the entire red euroland set at 10€.

I have almost-full-premium versions of Faerie Stompy and Solidarity. In Faerie Stompy, all Islands I play are Invasion #336 Islands (the John Avon's one). They're just awesome.

In Solidarity, I play a mix of the same foil Invasion #336, foil 7th Edition #334 and Portal Second Age A (the one with a baloon) and C (the one with a flying engine) Islands, all of them with "motivational" messages written by friends. These are my favorite lands of all.

For other decks, I use to play homogeneous sets of basic lands from several series. Among my prefered ones are sets of black bordered Portuguese and Japanese 4th Edition that I have lots of. I also like a lot a set of 21 Alpha Plains I own, I use to play them when I put my Death&Taxes togheter.

I'm pretty much anti-pimp (no foils, foreign languages, signatures, etc.) I also hate white bordered cards and the big mana symbols on the post-Masques block basic islands:

Generally though:

Islands: APAC (Clear and Red); Beta (red/pink sky); Unhinged -- The Euro islands are awesome, but the mana symbols turn me off--they just look goofy

Forest: Beta (this one)

Plains: APAC (Great Wall; Flowers)

Swamp: Mirage (this one)

Mountain: What the hell's a mountain? ;)

In Fish, I do like some of the Portal II lands and use those there:

I like guru and summer basics the most, but I play with the former more often as I like to preserve my summer cards. I really like APAC lands as well (the sunflower plain is really nice).

I would like to play a casual game or two using only parallax-tide basics one day, but I don't have enough of them.

I would also like to play stax/stompy with 4 x Foil +2 CoTs too.

Penny for pound, I still think most of the Ravnica lands are some of the sexiest basics out there. As this Arcana talks about, they did a lot of first hand research as a team to get the feel for Ravnica's basic lands, which I think really came through in creating an evocative and cohesive feel.

I'm not saying I wouldn't rather have a set of Guru Islands. I'm just saying I'd sell them off and use the Ravnica ones instead and feel pretty happy about the difference.

Mirage, Ice Age and Kamigawa block had generally pretty good lands as well, but I think Ravnica was the block where they knocked it out of the park, barring like, one of the Plains and one of the Forests. 18 out of 20 were pretty much awesome. The fact that they're the only straight-up-common basic lands that SCG sells out of seems to back up the theory too.

Ravnica was the only "basic land pack" (4 each of the 5 types) that I ever bought. Looking back, some are still my favorite best basics, but most have become meh.

The ones that still work for me.



For me, APAC has the greatest winners:losers ratio. In terms of consistency of beauty and perfection, Guru wins. Next to that, Urza's block, Portal (1k and 2k) and Mirage are my favorites.

Go with the Guru lands. They look so nice!
