Thread: [PRIMER] Oozing

    Re: [PRIMER] Oozing

2-2 at our local Tuesday Night Magic with a classic Raystar BUG list, only with two Decay main over the Mox and a CT.

Miracles 0-2. It's Miracles. He knows what I'm playing, so there's no element of surprise to leverage in G1.
Reanimator 1-2. Felt like three close games this time. I went with the brave and bold Seal'n'Exhume sideboard plan, started a game with Seal in hand on the play, but he went T1 land-petal-entomb-reanimate. I guess that's what it feels like to play against us.
Nic Fit 2-0. That deck seems way weak to combo, though they do beat you up very quickly if you stumble.
Storm 2-1. It's a race and I got good hands.

Nothing new or interesting here, I guess, all these results feel on par with expectations for the matchups.

    Re: [PRIMER] Oozing

I don't feel like Oozing has a worse match-up than Reanimator. Try to disrupt them with discard and pray for the Ground Seal to hold up? Meanwhile, they have counterspells, a limited discard suite and a fast clock.

    Re: [PRIMER] Oozing

We had some discussion about the Reanimator matchup a while back and didn`t really come to an agreement. I think they`re favoured, but it`s not completely impossible. If you mean that it`s our absolute worst matchup, I disagree, if for nothing else then just for factoring in Miracles as a worse matchup.

The two decks have very similar game plans. If they reanimate Iona or Griselbrand, they pretty much win every bit as much as we do with our combo. On top of that they have counters and arguably a bit more redundancy, while we are faster, though that doesn`t help much if we Ritual into FoW. We also can`t Buried Alive our combo and let it sit in our yard for a turn because they have Reanimate. If there is anything working in our favor, it`s probably the Ground Seal plan, particularly since they are very likely to take out Exhumes, though that forces us to not add any Surgicals we might have from the board, and swapping Reanimates for Exhumes make us slower and can lead to a surprise Entomb from them into our Exhume. It`s tricky.

    Re: [PRIMER] Oozing

I've been playing Mono U OmniClash for a while, but I'm missing Dark Rituals.

Pin_vlc, great results, and some nice spice in the sideboard! How did you go at MKM?

I've been revisiting my deck structure, and I think I want to cut Ponder for more discard and a greater number of combo pieces:

    2 Swamp
    1 Island
    3 Underground Sea
    2 Bayou
    4 Polluted Delta
    3 Verdant Catacombs
    4 Lotus Petal
    4 Dark Ritual
    1 Chrome Mox

    3 Necrotic Ooze
    1 Phyrexian Devourer
    1 Triskelion
    1 Griselbrand

    4 Entomb
    3 Buried Alive

    4 Shallow Grave
    2 Reanimate
    1 Exhume

    4 Gitaxian Probe
    4 Cabal Therapy
    3 Thoughtseize

    4 Brainstorm

    Sideboard (15)

    4 Abrupt Decay
    2 Reverent Silence
    4 Ground Seal
    2 Exhume
    3 Massacre

I'll give it a bash over the next month and report back.

Having just seen Aether Revolt spoilers, wondering if Walking Ballista is worth running over Triskelion?

    http://www.magicspoiler.com/mtg-spoi...king-ballista/

Downside is you can't reanimate it, upside is you can discard for free from hand.

Not worth it. Not being able to reanimate this card is a pretty big downside since being able to surprise your opponents with the 3 damage is really good against creature decks. This card is only marginally better than Triskelion in every circumstance other than being a silver bullet target, but we play more Entombs and Buried Alives than Triskelions. Also, not only is it relatively easy to discard creature cards, we don't even need to since can still win without Trike by making large Oozes, so you're not gaining a ton at all by gaining the ability to discard this card at will.

Maybe a nice update . I dont play P. imp , and the autodiscard would be cool !

Very few times i reanimated Triskelion...

Some1 continue playing the deck ? Collective brutality its a must !

Haven't played this in a while, but thinking Walking Ballista is a straight swap for Triskelion.

So, Top got the axe. Miracles was our worst matchup. Are we back? I know I'm keen to get Oozing again!

Grixis is difficult, I agree. You can't play the Ooze because of Lightning Bolt, but they also have Deathrite Shaman.

They might switch to Fatal Push instead of Decay now, though, which would be better for us, because they're cold to a G2 Ground Seal. If you can resolve a Seal it's usually over for them.

So what would a good basic md/sb list look like post-top? I assume Ground Seal is even more important now because of the expected increase in DRS.

Also, how bad does Harsh Mentor hose this deck?

    Thoughts?

I haven't had the time to test yet. My take is that Green may stay in to support anti-hate like Leyline (that I believe will be a lot more common post top ban). At the same time there may be an argument for a U/B version that sports bounce in side.

Given that you are new to the deck, I would start with the tested B/U/G versions in the primer, they are a lot of fun to play ;)

    Re: [PRIMER] Oozing

After reading thru the primer and part of the previous thread, I'm going to build this what-appears-to-be-a-basic BUg list with 61 cards (is that normal??).

    2 Swamp
    1 Island
    2 Underground Sea
    2 Bayou
    4 Polluted Delta
    4 Verdant Catacombs

    4 Dark Ritual
    4 Lotus Petal
    1 Chrome Mox

    3 Necrotic Ooze
    1 Triskelion
    1 Phyrexian Devourer
    1 Putrid Imp
    1 Griselbrand

    4 Shallow Grave
    2 Reanimate
    1 Exhume
    4 Entomb
    3 Buried Alive

    4 Gitaxian Probe
    4 Cabal Therapy

    4 Brainstorm
    4 Ponder

I saw some discussion re:GitProbe/Therapy vs. Thoughtseize/Therapy. What was the consensus? I never could find a resolution. Or is it still an ongoing debate? Also wondering if Collective Brutality and/or Unmask which see play in BR Reanimator have any place in the deck.

Not sure what to use as a SB with the meta in flux... ideas?

EDIT: I built this on MTGO and ran a few games. I'm so obviously a noob at the deck!! LOL

It would look pretty much the same as pre-ban. Abrupt Decay, Ground Seal, and Reverent Silence are all still great answers to Deathrite Shaman, Surgical Extraction, Scavenging Ooze, Leyline of the Void, and Rest in Peace.

Harsh Mentor deals us at least six damage: two for the first Devourer ability activation, and four more for two Triskelion/Walking Ballista activations to kill the Harsh Mentor. That's provided you hit a 2CMC card on your first Devourer. If you don't it's going to be two more damage for each Devourer activation to get those two +1+1 counters.

I would stick with the primer list with Gitaxian Probe+Cabal Therapy, and the sideboard would be:

    4 Ground Seal
    2 Exhumed
    4 Abrupt Decay
    2/3 Reverent Silence
    2/3 Thoughtseize

depending on how much Leyline/RiP/Enchantress (lol RevSil is so good there) is in your meta.

Depending on how many midrange decks drop Decays for Fatal Push due to the decline of Counterbalance, I think we could even consider some Sylvan Library sideboard action. In a deck where you're usually just one card away from crushing your opponent, seeing that three cards in your draw step would be worth exploring if you can keep it on the table.
