So I posted something similar over in the 5c thread, but I don't think it should clog up their discussion. I came up with mono W Moat Stompy for the CANGD contest, and while it showed promise, it was never as good as Dragon Stompy (and probably Faerie Stompy). What it needed were more good beaters, and more ways to dig for Moat. Blue provides both of these.

I had tried blue before to no avail, but that was running Chrome Mox (which sucks unless you have a ton of gold cards), and bunch of fetches, a few duals, and 3 basics. The manabase never worked, and folded to LD pretty hard. So now I'm trying it with a Mox Diamond approach

Here was the list I started testing:

4 City of T
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Gemstone
4 City of B
4 Fetch
4 Tundra

4 Sea Drake
4 Angel
4 Serendib
4 Mulldrifter
4 Force of Will

4 Chalice
4 O Ring
4 Mox Diamond
4 Moat

sb:
4 E Plague
4 Leyline of the Void
3 Choke
4 Pithing Needle

I realized I liked it, but it had some big problems. First, Force was bad. Really bad. Second, I was mana flooded (28 sources) a ton. So I took out Force, and 4 lands (2 fetch, 2 duals) for 4 Shriekmaw (still testing) and...

...I couldn't figure out that last spot. Should it be a critter? Should it be dig? Trinket Mage? (I only run Chalice)
Gathan Raiders? Goyf? (Moat no likey)?
RPD? Tombstalker? (double non W/U is bad times, and I refuse to run Tarnished Citadel)

Then, like a bolt from the sky, a (possibly) awesome idea hit me. Academy FREAKING Rector. More Moats and Oblivion Rings main (oh, and Moat when I'm stuck on a single W = niiiiice) and more Chokes, Leylines (straight in mother effing play) and Plagues post board. Sounds worth testing to me.

So here's what I'm testing currently:

// Lands
4 [AN] City of Brass
4 [EX] City of Traitors
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
4 [WL] Gemstone Mine
2 [B] Tundra
2 [ON] Flooded Strand

// Creatures
4 [P2] Sea Drake
4 [LRW] Mulldrifter
4 [ON] Exalted Angel
4 [AN] Serendib Efreet
4 [LRW] Shriekmaw
4 [UD] Academy Rector

// Spells
4 [MR] Chalice of the Void
4 [SH] Mox Diamond
4 [LRW] Oblivion Ring
4 [LG] Moat

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [10E] Pithing Needle
SB: 3 [TE] Choke
SB: 4 [GP] Leyline of the Void
SB: 4 [UL] Engineered Plague

I'm sure it's not optimized (especially the mana base) and I occasionally mull into oblivion, but the raw power is off the charts. I'll keep testing and let you know how it goes. Till then,I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Have you tried splashing blue? I mean, you really want to abuse Moat with flyers and blue has probably the best fliers. I tried to throw togther a list and came up with this.

4 Tundra
4 Flooded Strand
3 Plains
1 Island
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
4 Chrome Mox

4 Sea Drake
4 Serendib Efreet
4 Exalted Angel
4 Aven Midcensor
4 Mulldrifter

4 Moat
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Oblivion Ring
3 Umezawa's Jitte
2 Sword of Light and Shadow

SB
4 Stoneclaoker
4 Trinisphere
4 Winter Orb
3 Meta game slots (Crypt, StP, Glowrider, etc)

Just a thought. I really like the deck and was trying to find another good white flier, but I just kept thinking of blue. I will try to test this out if you haven't tried blue yet.

Ireally liked it but was ignored. I really love the black splash for Maw.

(As noted above) I played around with the idea like you posted, but the manabase just didn't work like that. I always knew blue would be kick ass w/ Moat, I just couldn't figure out how to do it. I still haven't, but I think I'm zeroing in. I do always appreciate the ideas and feedback. I never actually ignore, but sometimes don't get to respond.

Yeah, I always hated the mana base because I would always get stuck with one basic or the other. If I added more duals, then I hosed myself to moon.

I would definitely stick with the route you are going. The only suggestion I would make would add some Sword of Light and Shadow. Recurring your Evoke creatures could be amazing. The life gain would also help because Cities, Tombs, and (if you add them) Tarnished Citadels.

Why not just run 4 Tundras instead of 2 Tundras and 2 Fetches? Tundra is the only land you could pull up with a fetch anyway, and it would help keep opposing goyfs smaler and opponent Stifles weaker.

Just a minor nitpick.

I believe that rector*4 is probably too many (and I'm not convinced at all by them actually), and that 20 lands is too few to support mox diamond (24 probably too many though). I would also reduce the slots that are too narrow or too mana restrictive. I would probably go with -2rector, -1angel, -1 shriekmaw, +2 lands, +2 stonecloaker.

If you want a better land for the Tundra/Fetchland Slot I'd go with Forbidden Orchard (http://magiccards.info/chk/en/276.html) - the tokens you're giving your opponent aren't bad at all for you because all your dudes fly and because of Moat. You could maybe do a 3/1 (?) split with Tarnished Citadel (http://magiccards.info/od/en/329.html) as you aren't that colour intensive though.

I'll also echo the sentiment that Rector isn't that great in here - most of the time he'll just be a 4 mana unblockable guy that doesn't have any further synergy but with your Shriekmaws (which will always have other targets too) which isn't that great.

The idea is, I think, that Rector is moats 5-8. No one can attack him without dudes that have flying or Rector will die, getting him the real deal. So even if he doesn't hit the yard, he still functions as a mini-Moat.
However, it's true that he applies no pressure by himself.

Good point. I'm trying to keep the deck equipment-free, to help vs. control, but you may be right. I'll keep it in mind.

Valid and changed.

4 Rector might be too many (hell 0 might be the right number) and you might be right about 20 lands. Right now I'm testing though. I would NEVER drop an Angel though, as what they do is too important to this deck (they are sort of a mini Moat on their own as the lifegain can negate a standard Goyf). Stonecloakers are a defenite no-no. I tested them in mono Moat Stompy, and I never could keep my mana open for them.

Interesting thought. I'd be worried about it being worse than City of Brass though. Clearly it's better with Moat out, but I win like 80% of the games I land a Moat anyway. I will run Tarnished Citadel over my dead body.

I've found that 12 any color sources + 4 UW sources has been pretty solid to cast about everything (mulligans are still too frequent).

That's pretty much it. Moat 5-8, or O Ring if Moat is dead. Plague and Leyline are fun options postboard as well. I'm still not sure about her though as I haven't had a chance to test mcuh.

I think I might try the following mana base:
4 Tomb
4 City of T
4 Mox Diamond
4 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
3 Tundra
2 Underground Sea
1 Island
1 Plains

and see if it can reliably support :u::b::w::w:

By my count unless I'm wrong that puts you up to 61 cards.

I've tried with 22 yesterday and it was clearly not enough, maybe also because I played 5-colour with too many ephemere lands (4*city of traitors, 4*gemstone mine and 2*tendo ice bridge). Moreover, MWS is really a bitch with stax decks, I've already noticed it.

By the way, I think that W is more important than U in the deck. I also think that if you don't play 5-color lands, then Shriekmaw should be abandonned. Finally, trinisphere should be MD if you don't play FoW (FoW was the only reason for not playing trinisphere in FS).
