View Full Version : Can only keep one deck.

This is one of those stupid threads where I ask for advise, but will probably go with the decision I have in my mind right now.
Times are tough, whatya gonna do, right? Anyway, I need to sell off the majority of my collection. I have lots of cards. Started playing in Mirage and really got into it during Urza Block. To give you an idea of what I have, I would say I personally cracked 3 or more boosters of Saga, Legacy, Destiny, Invasion before I quit shorty after. I have more Moms, Priests, Treetop Villages, Lackies, Rancors, than you can imagine. I'd say about 1000 white bordered and then maybe another 500 of (mostly) good stuff from Alliances, Mirage, Visions, Weatherlight, ect.
Besides having every deck still intact from those days (Sligh, mono-green Stompy, Squirrels, Phasing, Sui (hatred), White Weenie, Prosbloom, Recuring Survival, Counter Post, Sneak Attack, Pox) as of now I have three competitve Legacy decks built: Sui, Faerie Stompy, and D&T.
So, my question is this, being that you all know the format infinitly better than I, what do you think has the most lasting power? What deck will hold up the best over time in your opinion?
Keep in mind that (although a step backwards), I'm probably a few cards shy of being able to put together some other decks as well. From the decks I listed in paragraph 3, there are full playsets of Survival, Lackeys, Wastelands, Hyppies, Tradewind Riders, Lotus Petals, Mox Diamonds, Cursed Scrolls, and so on. I have Rectors, Strokes, Replenish,...Like I said, I have some shit.
For instance, I'm only shy a playset of Piledrivers to get mono-red Goblins going. The biggest stumbling block would be my lack of Duals and Fetches. I only only own 3 Volcs, I USea, 1 Trop, 2 Delta, and 1 Strand. So, even though I have Goyfs, Counterbalances, Mongeese, Bobs, Bolts, StPs, ect, Thresh and anything that requires maximum Fetches is out.
Of the three Legacy viable decks I have built, I enjoy playing Faerie Stompy the most. Of course Moxs, Cities, Tombs, FoW's, Drakes, and Arabian Nights Serendibs will get me some nice cash I'd imagine. I could do the responsible thing and sell that off and just keep D&T, which besides Vials and Ports, is pretty worthless resale wise. I enjoy playing it, it's just not my favorite. Like I said, it would leave me with a deck to play though.
Okay, I'll stop rambling and maybe take some feedback if anyone hasn't back-clicked yet.

Faerie Stompy is the best out of those three choices. I could back this up, but it just is.

That was my choice also. I love the deck, but just the Drakes, Efreets, and Forces alone could get me like $300. I guess if I sell off every other relevant card I own, I'd still do pretty well and have a deck I like. I would just feel crappy knowing a car payment or more is sitting in my closet. Tournaments are few and far between around these parts.

I'd keep Faerie Stompy.. you can still sell the Arabian Nights Serendibs and buy some Revised ones to play with instead, to earn some $$

While I usually would not bother with something like originals, the Revised Serendibs are just so ugly (they feel like bad proxies) that I think I would actually keep the Arabian ones.
Anyway, I love D+T, so I would still keep it first.

HAHA, yeah I kinda feel like that too. Rather NO Faerie Stompy than play with Ifh-Bith stand-ins!
Seriously though, that's probably a good idea. I can keep FS and not feel as guilty about it. Drakes have come down a bit and It would kill me to sell Forces anyway. Definitely a solution to consider.

D&T is really a quite cheap deck anyway. You could consider keeping them both. They're both fun to play with and quite competitive.

True, selling off D&T might be more trouble than it's worth. The 4 Chants in the SB would be easy to unload though.
So besides the 3 decks I mentioned, is there really anything better that I could put together with the cards I have mentioned? I mean I could sell the Drakes and Efreets and get some cheap white-bordered duals. What would I need for Ugr Thresh mana wise? I have all the spells, 4 Duals, and 3 Fetches... And like I said Goblins is 95% in my possesion. I got the Wastes and Lackies from Sligh, the Seige-Gangs from a Type 2 Gobins build, the Ports and Vials from D&T, Matrons, Ringleaders, ect.
Will Thresh and Goblins ever not be competitive compared to the others? I know it's backwards thinking to go and buy more cards, but when I say "keeping one deck", that's it. I'm selling every friggin card that's sellable beyond that single deck, even if I feel I'm attached to it.
In otherword let's say I keep FS and make $1000 or I sell everything including FS and D&T and get $1300. I can justify using that $300 "extra" to buy duals and Fetches to make a version of Thresh. Does that make sense?
Goblins, unless you really enjoy playing it, should probably be sold off. The deck is actually fairly expensive in total. Then again, it's probably more competitive than Faerie Stompy or D&T.
I'd say you should keep a deck that can adapt to a lot of different metagames. Not sure what that is, but Thresh is a pretty good choice if you like playing it.

You must keep the 4 Forces from FS.
Then you need Tarmogoygs which are expensive as hell.
Then 4 Tropical Islands, 7 U-Fetchies, 4-7 Tundra and/or Underground Sea and/or Volcanic Island.
You are short with 300$ if you want to build a Thresh-Build I think.

Best suggestion made so far.
Faerie Stompy is pretty cool, but inconsistent. You really might build Thresh. Goyfs, Duals and such also have a more constant value.
I actually did the same, I sold my TES and Ichorid and Deadguy Ale and IGGy Pop and only retained UGW Threshold. And after soem time, every time I felt like I have some money, I slowly bought myself a playset of Dark Confidants... a Playset of Thoughtseize... And then my cardpool growed.
I can nearly play every Threshold variant that exists so far now, that's why it never gets boring.

I do, I just never got to play it out. I always spent my money to build decks that didn't need Duals/Fetches. In the meantime I probably spent just as much money had I just bought them little by little over the past year.
Adan: I have Goyfs from my Type 2 deck. I'm not playing Standard anymore, ever. I forgot all about that stuff, Thoughtseizes, Goyfs, Garruks, Bitterblossoms...I was playing a Doran deck since Lorwyn first came out. So anything B/G that's relevant in Standard right now, I have.
I have 3 Tops, 4 Goyfs, 4 Geese, 4 CB, 4 FoW, and the 4 Dual/3 Fetches I own are relevant, if I go Ugr. Everything else is just commons pretty much.
Maybe that is the best bet. Basically what I'm looking for is the deck that will stay competitive over time. I know that no one here can predict the future, but I trust your opinions.
You can pretty much build RGBSA... that's a pretty solid deck, and infinitely customizable. But it's also a little bit too slow for some metas. Just throwing ideas out there :)

Did you make a full list of the playable cards in your collection? You could post it and we'd have some fun figuring out how to build the most decks out of it with the least cards.

Sell all the Standard stuff that isn't Goyf and Thoughtseize, that stuff will NOT hold its value.

I would like to see this too.
If I was in your situation (and I have been a few times in the past), I would keep all the stuff for any Survival variants you have pieces for (so you can change up decks without too much hassle or cost), keep the stuff for Threshold (Forces and Tarmogoyfs can be used in Survival variants, and the rest of the stuff is cheap anyway), and keep any duals and fetches you have. Survival is fun to play, easy to change up, and competitive. Convert the rest of your stuff to any duals and fetches you can get for cheap or would use in Survival decks, and then convert the rest money to get you out of your jam.

I can do that. I was gonna put a sale list together anyway so it would kill two birds.
MattH: Absolutely! All these Pain Lands can fuck off!
JACO: That's a good idea. The only thing I'm afraid about is keeping TOO much. I don't want sell any of it. I love my collection, but once I start rationalizing that I could use certain cards to build variants of the deck I'm keeping, before I know it I'll have a sale pile consisting of 2 Saffi Ericksdotters and an Uncle Istavan.

Well, I do have thousands of dollars worth of Star Wars figures that could be disolved first. It makes me sick to look at them. All that money wasted and all they do is sit in storage. At least I use my Magic cards. However, I'm attached. Something has to go. I need at leats 3 grand in the next month.
Anyway, just for the hell of it:
I may have listed some commons without thinking, but I tried to keep it to just rares and UCs. I think I can say with 99% certainty, if the common in question spans 4th-Invasion and 10th-Morningtide, I probably have it.
If there is no (*) next to the name, I have full playsets or more.
This is just off the top of my head, I may have left some out, but pretty sure that's the most relevant stuff. I know I don't have Deeds, Vincates, Shackles, ect. If it came out after Invasion and before Lorwyn, I wouldn't have it unless I bought it specifically for a deck I built in the last year.

Unfortunately on the flip side of that I have more fucking cards with the word "Rystic", a shit load of useless Legends and dragons, and more than enough crap rares to build a house or six. The other day I actually counted 7 Second Chance, 5 Lurking Skurge, and get this 11 Grim Monoliths. WTF!?

It seems you don't have that many dual lands, so my suggestion would be to keep the ability to play pretty much any deck based around the Stax/Stompy core.
Keep Tombs, Cities, and the useful artifacts (I think you're only missing Trinisphere, and Crucible for Stax), as well as the Faerie Stompy cards. After that, when you get tired of FS, it would be very cheap for you to start playing Dragon Stompy or Armageddon Stax (without Angels, which is an acceptable choice in some metas). Demon Stompy is also cheap, and a thrill to play; I suppose you could even keep the rainbow lands and experiment with Junk Pile builds. The only one that's out is Green Stompy, because it uses T2/Extended staples like Garruk and Colossus, which you probably want to sell right now, as well as Tarmogoyf.
If you need more money, you can even sell the pricey FS stuff and still be able to switch between DS, Stax, and other less renowned Tomb decks.
Dude, sell the Star Wars figures. If you feel that guilty owning them, then that may be a sign that it's time for them to go :-\

I don't know much about the market for SW figures. Are they continuing to increase in value? If so, I wouldn't sell them...yet. What's the old saying about selling appreciating assets in order to pay off liabilities? Oh yeah, don't do it.
Also, sitting "in storage". Does that imply that you're paying a monthly fee to keep things that you don't use? If so, I see a place where money could be saved.

Alright, keeping the "Stompy" core (as well as FS intact) seems like the best idea. I can also hang onto the Stalkers, Maws, Negators, and Magus for when I want a change. Like you guys said, getting some Sloggers, Pit Dragons, ect in the future won't be too pricey anyway. It'll be painful letting Goyf go, but with him rotating out of T2 soon at least I know he won't increase in price. He may even drop a bit. I guess I'll keep D&T as well. What the hell, right?
m03: No, I just mean they sit in the attic and gather dust. I have no room to even begin to display them.
I think what I'll do is put up a first run of auctions of every Standard card right now. While those are doing their thing I'll assess the Star Wars figures and see what's worth selling. If I can get what I need and still maintain my MTG collection, I'll hold off on letting the Legacy staples go until the very end.
If it does come down to it, then at least I have a decent game plan to work with. Thanks guys, I appreciate all of you helping me out.
