View Full Version : [HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT] mtgTheSource.com's 5 Year Anniversary Tourney!!!
Nightmare

Ladies and Gentlemen,
October 18, 2003 was a very important day in the history of Magic: the Gathering. On this fateful day, a group of then TMD moderators decided to split from the site, and create their own message board, focused solely on the format known as 1.5. They called this site "The Source," and it was, and is, the place many of us call home on this vast expanse of information superhighway.
Soon, and much sooner than we had realized, the site took off, and became the premiere site for information on the 1.5 format, and then when Wizards so decreed, the Legacy format that took its place.
So much has happenned in the last five years. We've seen three Grand Prix events, we've had thousands of tournaments across the globe, we've seen the metagame ebb and flow; and we've seen a format develop from a few small pockets across the US into a world wide format that garners hundreds of players each month in countries from the US to Japan.
It's been an amazing five years. But this isn't the end. To celebrate the accomplishments of the last five, and to kick off the next, we've decided to hold a balls to the wall, gigantic tournament on the anniversary of the site. The details are unclear as of yet, as the logistics of the best location for the tournament are difficult to decide on, and the prizes are still being worked out, but the date is set in stone.
Mark your calendars, folks. You're going to want to keep the weekend of October 17, 18, and 19 as clear as possible.
Here's what we have so far:
The tournament will most likely not be held in a store. We'd like to model it similar to the way the Waterbury events were done in the past - A hotel conference room, with special room rates available to those wishing to travel.
The prize structure is this: We're combining anything we can get - be it donations of playables, or people putting up whatever they can. The goal is to have this be the largest prize pool of any Do-It-Yourself event in Legacy history. At the very least, the goal is to have first place be no less than 40 Dual lands. This is, again, at the very least. Our goal is to have prizes - and not shitty ones - go down as far as top 16, possibly further. We'd like to give people an incentive to play every round.
Door prizes will be given out each round. These will also not suck.
The goal is to get over 100 people to this event. We want this to truly be a collection of the people who have made this site what it is today. I would be absolutely amazed if anyone got out here from Europe, but this would be the time to do it if you planned to. This event is going to be a show stopper, folks.
Any suggestions can be sent to the mod staff here, as we'll be discussing the planning with the Adepts to best serve the community for this event. If you'd like to make donations to the pool of prizes and door prizes, feel free to do so. PM me, and we'll get the ball rolling.
It's gonna be big, guys. You've earned it.
INFORMATION:
Date: October 18th, 2008 (A Saturday. The Gods smile down upon us.)
Time: Registration begins at 10am. The tournament will begin at 11am.
Entry Fee: $30 (See prizes below for justification)
Location: The Vestal American Legion's Info:
118 S Jensen Rd
Vestal NY
(607) 797-2290
Vestel, NY is located in the Binghamton, NY area (An hour south of Syracuse), home of Eli Kassis and Crazy Carl Winter. The store, Jupiter Games, is run by Eli Kassis, with help from Carl. Although the event is not being held in the store, the store's inventory will be available for everyone. The store's information is:
Jupiter Games
3701 Vestal Parkway East, Vestal, NY 13850 US
Store Phone # is 607-729-5910
There is plenty of food options within walking distance (Wendy's, Applebee's, Chinese Buffet, and more). These are a list of hotels within walking distance of the shop; Courtyard Marriot (607)644-1000, Marriott (607)644-9093, Hampton Inn & Suites (607)797-5000, Holiday Inn Express (607)348-0088. I recommend reserving soon because Binghamton University which is also within walking distance has parent night and they tend to book alot of rooms.
Now...Prizes!

ANYTHING WE DO NOT GIVE OUT IN PRIZE SUPPORT WILL BE GIVEN AWAY AS DOOR PRIZES! We aren't keeping any of this stuff for ourselves, so come on out, you're sure to walk away with something! Remember, this list is only going to continue to grow! I will edit the thread when additional prizes or information is given.
If anyone has any questions or anything, or if I forgot to add some information, please feel free to talk to either myself or Nightmare. The best way to get a hold of either of us is through PM'ing us on The Source, but you can also talk to me on AIM if you like. My AIM screenname is melancauly.
With all that said, we hope to see you all on October, 18th. You won't want to miss it!

This sounds cool and I'll definitely attempt to make it out there. To make it the biggest do it yourself prize support you'll need to try harder than 40 duals though, because I gave away a Black Lotus and a Time Walk. That said, I'm looking forward to it at any prize support level because large tournaments are hard to come by.

Cause this is probably gonna be at least the equivalent of three playsets of duals to the top 8.

40 Duals is just the first place prize. I highly doubt that will make up even close to half of the total prizes.

I've driven to multiple events in both CT and Mass, and I've never seen you at one. Why the fuck would I assume this would change? I'd just as soon locate it as best I can for everyone. If that means you can't go, well, you wouldn't have regardless.

Actually. With the idea of what this tournament is celebrating, it would be cool to have the event in a place that's light on Legacy events. Find some mid to large city that has MTG events, but with few of them being Legacy.
Such an event happening in the area could be great for the Legacy movement.
But regardless, this sounds like a great idea.
Is there going to be an entry fee? I'd assume there would be. And what would the price be?
I was also thinking that it could be neat to have a free entry with donation of something to the prize pool. It just depends on how expensive the space is that you end up getting.

I go to Hadley all the time, and I always try my best to make everything in CT. Its just a 4 hour drive is not realistic when Im not the one driving.

Actually. With the idea of what this tournament is celebrating, it would be cool to have the event in a place that's light on Legacy events. Find some mid to large city that has MTG events, but with few of them being Legacy. This usually doesn't work - you can't generate the interest you'd have in an area that does have Legacy. For example, in Syracuse or NoVa, we'd have like 25-30 based purely on locals showing up. It can't hurt.
Is there going to be an entry fee? I'd assume there would be. And what would the price be?

It just depends on how expensive the space is that you end up getting.Yeah, they'll be an entry fee. Probably in the $25-30 ballpark. We're really not looking to profit from this, but we do need to cover our costs. We considered the idea of reducing price based on donations, but who evaluates which donations are worth what? What if there's a dispute? It generates more hassle than its worth. If people want to help make the prize pool redic, awesome. If not, well hopefully someone else will. I know we're off to a decent start based on the Adepts who have offerred to help, but we can always use more.

If it were that simple I would make it out there myself one of these days. I want to go to this more than anything, but it's just not realistic to do it on an October weekend. Maybe if I get lucky and the few of us in CT can work out a car-pool or something, but none of us live anywhere near each other, and it'd be practically an hour in the wrong direction for anyone I'm aware of on this site to pick me up, and vice-versa likely... bleh.
We'll see. By then I'll have a car that actually functions, so I might just be able to make it up, but no promises.

I would definitely like to make this. Although I don't post much I've been on these boards for a while. I'd definitely like to put more faces to names. So far I've only been able to meet a few of you. However, 10 hours is quite the drive. If there is anybody else in the midwest area that would like to attend send me a PM.\
Edit: That's Indy -> Syracuse. I would not be adverse to having this in Virginia as its about the same distance for me.

Actually, simultaneous regional Source tournaments would be a nice touch. Source-East in Quse, Source-MidWest in Columbus (or MI or MN or wherever, don't get sidetracked...or all 3!), Source-West in a Cave, Source-EuropeNorth in Germany or Belgium or Amsterdam, Source-EuropeSouth in Italy, maybe Source-Japan if they can get it together. Whatsisname the Peace Corps guy could do Source-Stuck-In-The-Pacific-Ocean. Why not make it a global celebration & see what can happen? Also, it would be really cool if all the Top 8s then played an online tournament of some kind  with their local wining decks.

Definition of a logistical nightmare. It's gonna be hard enough to pull off one tournament, let alone 6 with an online (worldwide) top X.
One would hope the local TO/go-getter would set up all the logistics (they already have a date to work with). Trying to do so from one person/area would, indeed, be a nightmare (no pun intended). And the online Source-off was more along the lines of a wistful hope. Obviously that would have to be done afterward, over a period of time. But most people are not going to be able to make any one tournament, why not encourage other locales to be part of the concept/event?

That doesn't really seem like an even trade off so that a couple of Southerners can make it. Syracuse seems to be the most centralized location, and has proven capable of getting large numbers to attend.
I think I can probably make it to this. Maybe a summer in VT will have cleared my head a bit, and I won't be such an ass  Seriously though, this should be lots of fun

We had 51 players last summer and 50 players at the last tournament in March. People from NY traveled to the event just like we travel to their events. I know that some people who are further away might not make it, but we might get more people from here as well. Most NY tournaments don't average more than the VA tournaments. The tournament this last Saturday being the major exception and it had more people than any east coast tournament that I know of.

I will help Nightmare set up this event, considering I believe that my Big Arse tournaments were the start of all these new big legacy tournaments and DLD's. My tournament organization skills pwn.

Not Boston. You could shorten the New York time and keep the Virgina the same by moving it to the west. This also cuts out Boston, reducing traffic and cutting out that whole maze that Boston is.

Columbus, Ohio is about equidistant between Syracuse and NoVA, less than seven hours from Chicago, St. Louis, and Nashville, and not quite as egregiously expensive for anyone from the West Coast. The last major Legacy tourny there also saw considerable attendendance, so it's quite possible that we'd get a number of local players who aren't too into the metagame but have (possibly) fun memories of GP Flash. Everyone wins!*
*Except Massachusetts. Who cares?

If a date and city can be nailed down soon, Pinder and I are in. If you wait until a month in advance and plane tickets are $600/each round trip, well, then you can Top 8 with bad decks because we won't make it.
Also, you can be fracking lightweights about beer and no one will be able to make fun of you. Seriously, East Coast = lightweights (except for Nightmare, who drank a whole bunch, and therefore earned his drunken-ness). The rest of you ought to be ashamed.

I take personal umbrage to this as a matter of regional pride. If you and Pinder show, I'll personally guarantee that no amount of drunkenness will actually result in my losing an argument. Light weights my ass. Go back to your organic all-natural avacado-flavored soy-beers.

It doesn't really represent the entire source though... perhaps do an online kinda thing? And just ship the prizes to the placers?
Having it in NY kinda limits who can go, and does not really deserve to be named the sources tournament... as most people on the source do not live on the east coast (there are plenty of people in the south, west, mid-west, and other countries that could not conceivably play in this event)...
Unless people wanted to make another road trip (the other way)... but I could not do this as I would be back in school :) .. Although I would have gone in a heartbeat (have the money now... would have gone to the batcave event if it did not interfere with another trip).
I'd love to go to this if I can hop on someone's go-machine there. I'm stranded otherwise.
We can make that happen. Probably involving some meeting in the city or something. Depends on where I'm living next year, but it will probably end up being Boston.

Fatefully, the five year anniversary of The Source falls on a Saturday.
THE DATE WILL BE SATURDAY OCTOBER 18, 2008. THE TOURNAMENT WILL BE HELD SOMEWHERE IN
SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
Nightmare and I will secure all the details later, just write that date down.
The prize support for this event will be the sickest ever. There will be NO POWER given away at this event. I never believed in giving away Vintage prizes for a Legacy event. Black bordered stuffs and Alpha/Bets stuffs will be given away for sure!!
...and actually I just talked with Nightmare on the phone and apparently people have already started to contribute to the cause. So let's get amped up for this, we want it BIGGER than the $1000 tourney last weekend!
You guys should post this on other sites. Do it in the Legacy section and tournament section at SSG.com, TMD, Salvation, and any other sites you can think of.

There will most likely be a car from Stoughton going. Right now it is just my brother and I (and maybe a friend, but I somehow doubt we'll be able to convince him to go), so there is 2-3 seats available in our car as of now.
Also, is anyone from 'Cuse putting people up in their house or should we plan on getting a hotel?

Ditto for me and my compadres (looking like around 5 at most?).
Us capecodders just drove 6 hrs to syracuse just like our virginian friends, and adam you will def see some hammafist action out there.
Indeed, Jon and I will definitely make it (most likely with others, 2 min to 6 max) Can we crash at someones place? Adam? Kadilak? Someone Else?

Shotgun on floors for TEAM INFONINJA (2-5 members).
Better yet, as we are from the Northwest, and not the East Coast, we are polite and know how to shower and use deodorant!

Positive. That will be the date and when we secure a facility to house this, we will let you guys know in a separate thread.
I will also have room for peeps. 7-8 can probably fit comfortably on my floorspace. Clean people who will pick up after themselves please apply. I will show y'all where the garbage/bags is/are.

Also, you can be fracking lightweights about beer and no one will be able to make fun of you. Seriously, East Coast = lightweights (except for Nightmare, who drank a whole bunch, and therefore earned his drunken-ness). The rest of you ought to be ashamed.
Go screw. I finished three double Maker's before you drank a single beer, and kept it up the whole night. And I wasn't half as trashed as Adam. Alix was right; go suck down your honey-wheat-bluberry-sissy-water, and talk some more shit. Real men drink whiskey.

I will be at this & coming from Woosta (central MA) if people need help with transportation to the Quse. I expect to continue a longstanding tradition at big events of fucking something up in the last round of Swiss to definitively miss Top 8 and since I won't have to be to work until midnight Sunday (or even later possibly) drinking will be involved. Alex, can I shotgun your couch again? I will bring more booze! And I still believe that regional Source tournaments outside the Northeast on the same day would be a nice touch (with all the work falling on local TOs). So, local TOs, what say you? Ray (Iamfishman) already volunteered but RI/CT/MA should be able to make the Quse (although he makes a FANTASTIC resource for anyone new to organizing tournaments as he does the Vintage Waterbury & Legacy Mana Leak series of tournaments, i.e. some of the best tournaments anywhere, ever, in terms of options such as side events & trivia/other gamerly activities, prizes, and overall coolness).
True that Ray's tournaments are the best! Team Trivia 4TW!

A side note, at the last TMD's team Trivia What cards are missing from Hammafistroob's T1 deck was one of the questions. Needless to say we got the question right...

What's the incentive to hold it somewhere that's accessible to exactly Syracuse and Massachusetts, over somewhere around Columbus/Pittsburgh that general area, that's within a <10 hour drive of more than 50% of the population of the country, again?
The general vibe I'm getting from New Yorkers is that the answer is, "It's easy for us", which is fine, but doesn't really jive with the whole, "Let's make this as big and awesome as possible" altruistic vibe we started off with at the bat.

I think it mostly has to do with how fucking hard it is to plan a tournament somewhere other than where you are. The logistics turn into a nightmare. I remember when I tried to organize a West Coast tourney in Portland, from Seattle, to make it the most accessible to everyone in the West coast. It wasn't until Volt (who lives in Portland) did it that it actually happened. And that was only a 3 hour drive away.
In short, it's really hard to organize a tournament in a state you don't live in.

Driving up with the Orlando metagame in tow?I have a freakin suburban that seats about 10, so it could happen. I absolutely would consider some sort of plan. 21 hours of nonstop driving each way at $4.00/gallon in a suburban would suck, but it could actually be financially defrayed with enough bodies. But I doubt there are 10 people in this state to bring.
EDIT: By the way, there is a huge European contingent on this site now who contribute considerably to it. I see no effort of any kind to make this suck less for those who live outside of the N.E. United States.

It's not like we can travel out to Columbus two or three times to make sure the arrangements are in order. Even if we limited it to like, one time before the event, that's a pretty significant trip to make just to make sure a space is big enough for 100 people (which I still feel is an achievable goal of attendance - how sick would an 8 round event be, though?). I think it's got to be somewhere where the people organizing live, which is either VA or NY. If we go with VA, we risk losing MA.

If you can't make this but would still like to be a part of it in some way, I would suggest maybe doing some sort of altered card (even just signed) and donating it in as a door prize. The card doesn't have to be worth anything, even just a basic land, or perhaps some card not worth much of anything that you really like and are known to play. Just alter it in some way to add uniqueness to it and contact Nightmare about sending it to him.

i REALY think what this needs is one of those online maps where people can put pins into the map showing their location. There are gonna be people here posting things like "if you're in X pm me to talk carpooling" all over the threads for this thing, and a lot of those opportunities are gonna be missed.
There will probably be atleast 4 or 5 cars coming from MA, and it would be prety stupid to make the stoughton car make a detour to worcester while there's a car coming from worcester already just because one guy from worcester saw a "if anyone from ma is going" post from the stoughton group first.
And in case none of that works and it ends up being like all tournys where too many people try to organize too many things at once, and then day of tourny you have 20 people posting "well, since 2 guys in my group all of a sudden decided not to go, the whole group didnt go".... I will say right now, i'm going from Worcester, i dont know how or with who yet, but I'm going.

Well, you actually lose people either way. Not everyone from VA and places South of here will come all the way up to upstate NY to play. If you pick VA then you might lose some people MA, but you might get people from MD, VA, NC, SC, and others. Its hard to say, but since you are planning the event it is obviously up to you. I was suggesting VA because it does have an active Legacy scene and you seemed open to the possibility of having it somewhere other than NY.

I really like the idea of altering a card or donating some card that has personal significance to you or something like that. A foil Psychatog will be given from me at least. This tournament sounds baller. I approve. As for centrally locating things, there are easily 10+ Legacy players in Massachusetts willing to go to this. I vote NY for that reason.

Edit:
a couple of suggestions:
1. Everyone should have a nametag with your souce name, not just adepts.
2. Bring your camera
3. I vote for Virginia as a location for a couple of reasons.
a. its a neutral location with alteast 3 airports in a close proximity.
b. mass transit and many ppl with cars.
c. getting a hotel would not be necessary unless you want to be that close to the tournament
d. many many many hotels to chose from (because we have so many conventions in DC)

I'm not sure what to think of your comments other than you think you're solely in charge of this thing. While Nightmare has expressed an interest in holding the tournament in New York, he hasn't discounted outright holding it anywhere else. Telling everyone else who doesn't live in New York to shut it is unnecessarily antagonistic and begs for this thread to devolve into a flamefest.
While you cannot and should not try to please everyone, isn't there some value in listening to the rest of the world?

While you might have read what Nightmare has posted here on the forums, he is my best friend and I talk to him in person, not just on the internet. He knows that I am taking proper actions and we have already discussed everything that I have posted. Most posts he made we before we had discussed how we were going to go about this. We have recently discussed potential locations to hold this in Syracuse.
And being firm about decisions that have been made so this thread doesn't turn into a whiny-let's-have-it-here bitchfest, I am eliminating any questions in people's mind on where and when it will be. Mainly since this will be so big, members like Pinder have asked to nail down a date in location for planning purposes. A relevant request, I obliged.
So in regards to my comments being "unnecessarily antagonistic," I would suggest you know the facts before criticizing my posts.

Yeah, why drive 14 hours to spend the day with a bunch of people that have helped this site and format from 1.5 to now grow and evolve becuase of a few people who play wow that like to say "FTW!"... hell, Peter_Rotten says FTW. A 14 hour drive is nothing. I was part of a crew that drove to Daytona from Syracuse for the weekend to play in a Grand Prix and it was a blast. Every large Legacy event I have attended has been a fun experience, no matter if I were playing or judging or just hanging out. Sourcers are great, but part of my point with the previous post is that we are all still Magic players and at out hearts we are all lazy bastards who only listen when we want to, only hear what we want to, and only read if we need to.
Some of that was lost in the translation. My bad. As for "FTW," I was unaware that being 31 I am not able to use internet abbreviations. Lo Siento. At what age is the cut-off, for future reference...? [/Sarcasm]

All of the prizes, that I know of, have been donated by Sourcers and the stores that support the Source (and vice versa.) A lot of the above has been donated by Adepts, and I know Off the Wall games had offered help in any way possible, as well as Ray from the Waterbury (I believe) tournaments.

Unfortunately I just sold most of my collection so I can't make a huge donation at the moment, but I'll be donating a Foil Hammerfist Giant signed by all of team Hammafist. [also something less huge like a set of duals once I get cards again]

The David Gearhart Demographic demands that there be an adequate amount of David Gearhart in the coverage for the event. Even if I go 0-2 drop, there should at least be large amounts of "David Gearhart Sucks!" in the coverage. Alternatively, if I go to Top 8, then there should be a reasonable amount of "David Gearhart Rocks!" in the coverage. Should I do adequate and not make top 8, then there should be some "David Gearhart is Mediocre!". I'm not picky. But the David Gearhart Demographic will not be denied!

You're an idiot. Why in the name of hell would we give out 4 Jittes as the sole prize to even 8th place with the amount of stuff we're giving out? In the structure of purely duals, 8th would get 4x non-blue duals. What's the difference between that and the equivalent $ in non-duals? I'd rather not bear the burden of keeping track of who supplied what, and how it was converted into what duals. People (and not you, btw) have been extremely generous up to this point, and I'd like to think that I could return the favor by being as generous with the prize support.

I'd also avoid turning prizes into cash and then buying different prizes with them, because it sounds like skirting the area where the IRS starts wanting to cut off your balls. I know I told a lot of people I would come to the next american Legacy GP to meet a lot of you guys, but I think I'll just try to make it to this one.
Obstacles to be taken:
- Getting my wife to agree.
- Getting my boss to agree
- Getting my bank account to agree
- Try builing a deck again
- Try to get into the format again within a month.
- Booking a flight
- Hoping homeland security doens't have too much trouble with my political views, which I normally have no trouble expressing on fora.
I'm going to try at the least, this thing should be epic. I just wish someone could pick me up from an airport near. I'll donate pictures of my wife, to be sold to P_R.
Which airport would be best to fly to for this tourney?

Syracuse, obviously  Failing that, Albany is en route for any of us coming from Mass, even NYC (although it would mean taking the Angrytroll Express train to Quse). Seeing as how international flights are rediculously expensive, another option on top of what Scrum mentioned is Rochester NY (about 70 minutes away, I'm fairly sure there will be 3 or more cars coming from Rochester to this event, if I end up driving I'll see about accomodating people).

Neat idea for a prize: Take the best 8 cards from the Source cards thread. Have Pinder print them out on blank cards at work, then send them to yawg to do the artwork. Let the Top 8 draft the priceless one-of-a-kind cards.
Ok,
So both Albany and Syracuse are in the E780-850 range. They are not an option.
New York City is in the E575-675 range, still expensive as hell. But we're getting better. How let's see if things get cheap when flying from Belgium or Germany, I'm near both borders, so it should be doable.
Dusseldorf is in the E420-640 range. Stupid Germans.
Antwerpen is 456, however it includes a trainticket to Amsterdam where I'll fly. That's the same Amsterdam where the cheapest ticket would be 575. Weird Belgiums.
I'll keep on looking anyway. When I find a even cheaper option, I'll just take it. I can pursuade the wife, bribe the boss. Eat less food for half a year to satisfy my bankaccount. That leaves homeland security as the main problem ahaid of me. I think I'll manange :)
Thanks for the offer scrumdogg, let's hope I'll need to keep you to it.

So would have Seal of Cleansing. Not that Mask was ever worth meta-gaming against.
Null Chamber was always a fringe card, and is now completely irrelevant.
Dovescape is good as SB material.
Somehow I think Elephant Grass, Solitary Confinement, Ground Seal, Gaea's Touch and Karmic Justice are all a little more relevant to the deck's current strength.
PS: You would play Kirtar's Desire over Angel? In what meta-game? That's horrible.
re: Zach - If so, we should also sign Elephant Grasses to go with them. Since you can't pimp them through the convention methods. Although I don't know about our odds of finding this "Tony Roberts" fellow to sign.
Thanks for all the advise so far.
The wife commes back wensday from her trip to her parents in Scotland. As soon as she get's here, I'll talk to her about it. I know the estimated costs right now, so I'll convince her and see if I have some room in my bank account.
Spending +/- 700 euro for a weekend fun without a possibility of me earning it back (a playset duals plus some extra's arent going to cover that, besides it's been ages since my last accomplishment, top4 in the source tournament) is going to use soms fast talking I'm afraid. I also have to rebuild the bathroom, so talking fast might not seal the deal.
I really hope to make it, however I'm getting the feeling I won't.
I might also just buy some more lottery tickets, see if god really likes me.

But if I ask Northwest Airlines for a flight from Amsterdam to Syracuse and back, I get $1600 after taxes just for that. Bah...

My round trip flight from Albany to Indianapolis ran at $400 after taxes on United Airlines, but from Travelocity it ended up being just over $200.
Flying from Dusseldorf is the cheapest so far. I could also fly from Antwerpen for E20 more (which I'll save in gas if I do), however, that would include a trainticket to Amsterdam, which is cheaper than just fly from Amsterdam directly. Airlines are strange sometimes.
I dropped my wife off at Dusseldorf fryday. On her ticket it said I should bring here to Dusseldorf. When I get there, they tell me I'm at the wrong airport and that I should go to the other Dusseldorf airport. Which is in Weeze. Weeze is 70 miles away from Dusseldorf!!! I was really glad I was there on time, It took me another hour to get to the right airport, stupid germans...
E1000 is way too much, I already have found flights to New York for half that price. Are you also comming Nihil?

It was $1000 actually, so about €650, but if you found it for even less, good for you. As for me, I won't in all likelihood make the trip - the next few hundred euros I spend on Legacy will definitely be playsets of staples.

Dear People who want an entire artist-signed-Zach-signed-Matt-signed Enchantress Deck;
If you will make contact with the artist of the cards and confirm that they're cool with signing shit and sending it back (this will be difficult with the dude in England) I will take care of the rest. But, like, I can't call England on my cell phone plan. Just won't work. So, I'm asking you to:
Make contact and make sure that the artist is alive (not being macabre at all - one of the brothers who did Akroma's Vengance maybe died, unfortunately, a couple years ago) and will consent to signing the playset of cards that I send out.
Make sure that they don't want to be paid or any other shit. 'Cause, like, I'm totally fine sending back a self-addressed, post-paid envelope. But I ain't paying shit to some asshole trying to fleece me for fifteen seconds to sign four pieces of cardboard.
Confirm that the cards won't sit on the artist's desk or mailbox for three months. Like, that they'll be punctual (as opposed to that Portent chick who still has the portents, as far as I know.
I guess that's it. <3 the list function.

You should probably just get the entire list between the two of you, and give away one copy of the entire thing as a specific prize. Or something.

The Dragon's Lair (which will be running tournaments soon) and Off The Wall Games are sponsoring the playmats for the 5th anniversary tournament. I have contacted 'Zilla for a copy of the logo. If I do not receive the logo by print time I will be designing a logo for the playmat and submiting it to the screenprinter. Any suggestions?

We're moving the event slightly down the road to Binghamton, NY. Mostly because every place we looked at having it here was booked till December. Eli is hooking us up with event space in the hotel across the street from his new shop, so we'll have store access, food, hotels, etc. If anyone flying in needs to get there, we're still carpooling the one hour to the new location. We'll have a bunch of cars going, since we're still putting people up for the weekend if needed, so getting to the event from Syracuse shouldn't be an issue. I'll have the address and hotel info ASAP.

Rides and crashign space offered still stand, from me. If you crash at my place (slightly farther from the event, now) we'll still be able to rock the shit out of this thing.

I can say with some certainty that people from Virginia will be coming. However, it's new location in Binghamton will definitely impact matters (like crashing space) so that's going to call for some new thoughts.
Incidentally, beyond Zach's generous offer, are there other people who (preferably live close by) are willing to put up the Virginia contingent?
Not that I'm refusing your offer Zach, it's just good to know the options. After all, we might have a bunch of people so we should know in order to accommodate.

Ultimately, your accommodations could be exactly the same as they would otherwise have been. An hour drive on Saturday morning isn't gonna kill anyone. (hopefully)

I'm in the middle of house hunting (and looking to close around the end of September). In the event I do close by then, I should be able to put people up if they want to come to Rochester (however for the VA crew specifically, that's an extra hour or so of travelling they'd have to do instead of staying with people from 'Cuse, in general I don't think this makes much sense, except possibly for any Canadians coming down, but there's no sense in not letting people know they have options). I'll try to post updates when I have them.

To people needing crashing space, I live 4 minutes drive from the store and if people are willing to bring sleeping bags I can take a good number of people (Approx. 20). I also know Carl Winter would love to have some people over. Private message me for accomodations.

What Time of day are you guys planning on starting this?
If it gets to be 100 people or more, that's like 8 rounds, plus top 8/16? which can be a LOT of hours of magic.
I'm trying to figure out if planning to drive there from central MA on saturday morning is possible... and also if leaving for home on the day of the tourny is possible.
Doing both is insane (4 hour drive+12 hour tourny+4 hour drive, with no sleep in the middle....), but depending on what the start time is, one or the other might make sense.

I'd assume it will be registration at 10, tourney at 11, or reg at 11, tourney at 12. It will depend on which venue we use - which is forthcoming. Even with 100 people (aka, less than 128), it would be a seven round tournament.

With tournaments that cut to a top 16 they do one less round of swiss in any normally run event. So take one hour off your list, I am assuming we want registration at 10 and the tournament to start at 11 which usually gets pushed back a little bit. Depending on how people want the tournament run the top 8 and the top 16 can be run as two separate events who playoff for their own individual prizes instead of mixing them and creating a bigger event, but even if its mixed that is 4 rounds plus the 6 for the event since 7 is standard but with cut to top 16 its one less round. which is 10 hours from 11am which isn't all that bad. I am in contact with the 5 surrounding hotels all of which are within 1 mile of the store and event to get a discounted rate for everyone participating in the event. So far they have all agreed to giving a discount and i'm just waiting to hear who is the most generous, then I will post their addresses and telephone numbers. I recommend reserving asap as that day is also Binghamton Universitys Parents and Alumni Gathering so alot of people will be coming from out of town. However if you are willing to go as far as 2 miles from the shop you can add several more hotels to the list. Hotels go from as nice as a Ramada to as cheap as a Howard Johnson both within walking distance from the shop.
Considering the 6000 miles I'll have to travel if I can arrange it, I guess walking (or hitching) 2 extra miles won't be that much of a difference :)

You got it, I am currently working on getting us the best deal, however I already have a fall back location, but I want to find us more room as I expect this tournament will get very crowded. Also for those that are interested we are running a legacy event at the same location (Jupiter Games) on Sept. 27th with the top 8 prizes totaling $1,000 and a few hundred dollars in door prizes as well. Its posted under tournament announcements and reports as well for more details.

Speaking from the perspective of a repairman who drives ~6 hours everyday, no, it won't kill you, but it sucks. It's going to suck even more for the Virginia drivers. Unless we're leaving immediately after the tournament, it's an hour North to Syracuse, then an additional hour South to Virginia by way of Binghamton. That's an additional 73 miles of wear & tear and fuel expenses (58.5 cents/per mile according to the IRS) TIMES TWO.
