Hey, I'll hopefully be covering this:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=events/magic/legacychamps

this weekend for Starcity. I say hopefully because if I can't score a press pass, the chances of me being able to do this dwindle. That said, if all goes as planned, I'll be posting updates in the SCG Legacy forum for as many rounds as I can cover, along with metagame tallies and such. So my questions to you are:

1. What kind of non-feature-match article do you enjoy the most?

2. Is there anywhere with parking in the whole city that I don't have to pay out my ass for?

3. Is anyone coming up from Southern Indiana Friday morning and wants an amazing Legacy writer and all-around fun guy in their car?

4. Does anyone want a ride rom Southern Indiana that day to play in the champs and want to split gas/parking?

If you see me at the event, come up and introduce yourself and I'll try to get you into my coverage. The best time would probably be the early rounds, since I won't be doing feature matches then because we won't have any real feature matches to cover.

If Wizards is also doing coverage, they'll either make me look amazing or awful.

Aside from Metagame analysis (which you already mentioned), Deck Tech.

Well fuck a duck, that's awesome Doug.

In terms of coverage, I always enjoyed JP Meyer's Randomly Observed Shit commentary (the Triple-berserk Negator FTW plays, completely twisted board states or stacks, etc.) At the end of the day, the results will speak for themselves and discussing how Thoughtseize/CB Threshold beats on storm combo isn't all that interesting or valuable to n00bs and veterans alike.

Shining a spot-light on the tournament curios or randomly-observed awesome plays will get more clicks and will be more memorable than the traditional this-happened-and-then-this-happened that typical WOTC coverage falls prey too. If you're going to do feature match coverage, make it a compelling match-up or just in the T8. The rest of the time, IMO, should be observing the breadth of the format (the known and fringe). In the end, write about what's interesting to you and what catches your fancy and it will all be good.

And again, congrats on the gig. :)

That's pretty cool. One important thing is to get updates up quickly; we'd rather have sparse coverage throughout the day than two perfect updates. This is the one thing the Wizards blog does really well.

Wacky decks and how they're doing. A lot of times only the T8 decklists are posted, so any unusual cards, decks or strategies would be nice.

You already know how to write feature matches, so a few of those would be awesome.

One thing would be nice if you could just get the standings posted every round. Or just for the names you recognize. Hell, take a picture from them and post a JPG of the standings; just so viewers can track their players.

I remember a lot off Capitol Ave near some of the downtown nightlife, you could buy all day parking for something like $5, but you have to come back a little after midnight to feed the machine again. Weekends have free metered parking so find some street parking near the hotel Friday night.

Due to time and financial constraints, I won't be able to drive out to write coverage for GenCon. Getting a press pass is an iffy shot, and having just started school again, I have zero money : \ While that's a bummer, I promise to deliver a knockout article anyway. If someone can send me T8 coverage or lists or what decks were paired or anything like that, I'd appreciate it!

I don't understand how this works, so forgive me...shouldn't SCG be covering your expenses and getting you a press pass for the day if you are going to write an article?

If I had more time, I'm sure something like that could have been worked out. Since the last five weeks of my life have been consumed with studying criminal law, I've been unable to see non-school things on any kind of radar. It wasn't until very recently that I realized that GenCon and me being done with classes and me having my article coming up all fell on the same weekend. Chalk that up to the insularity of graduate work : \
