View Full Version : Why the sudden influx on new members?

Is it just me, or have there been a crap load of new members on these forums in the past month or so.
That is a very good thing imo. I love that legacy is getting more interest and this forum is getting the attention it deserves.
But what do you guys think is behind this surge.
Is it Vintage becoming so degenerate that cards like Brainstorm and Ponder had to join the ranks of cards like Black Lotus and Ancestral Recall on the restricted list?
Is it that Time Spiral, the most popular and best selling set Wizards ever produced is about to rotate out of standard and people wishing to play favorite cards like Damnation and Goyf are looking into the eternal formats.
Was it that people are catching on to the overall health of the format and the ridiculously large number of viable strategies in the format, more so than any format at any other time in the history of magic.
Is it that mtgthesource's threads are FINALLY showing up on google search results for the deck name leading lots more people to discover the site?
Or is this whole surge of new people just something that I notice.
P.S: To the regulars, for the love of god. Please stop bashing the newbies. I'm as guilty as anyone. But please just resist that urge. Most of them are likely new to the format. Bashing them won't convince them to learn more about the format and understand it. It will drive them away. So please, stop flaming newbies and post constructively. I for one would actually like to see Legacy grow to be more popular and get regular tournaments on a weekly basis.

I blame my popping up here on two things.
The first is my return to Magic after around twelve years. I hate the idea of Standard/Extended (especially in these tribal blocks) and don't have the money for Vintage (or really Magic at all but that's not that point).
The second is my insane forum addiction. I am a member of some of the most random forums on the internet. Simply because I like the interaction. I think I've already posted 3 deck ideas here in an attempt to contribute to the forums. So far all of them have been updates of old decks or decks from other formats and haven't done so hot in getting any interest from other players (not to mention leading me to a 50/50 win ratio over all the tournaments I've played).
New people are always good. Unless they're here acting like this is the main MTG forums where 99% of the deck lists posted (yes, even mine) are garbage and the improvement suggestions are worse.

If i'm permitted to go back to the original question: For me it was a number of things.
First, it's summer, so no college means I have a lot more time on the interwebs, and there's only so many times you can check cyanide and happiness before it gets repetitive, and the Magic Mothership plus Starcity non-premium don't provide more than 1 or two articles a day that interest me.
Also, standard makes me feel like a hamster stuck in one of those shitty wheels they put in cages. You spend all this time getting good with a deck, and you really haven't gotten anywhere, because the rotation kills your baby before you get to see it grow up, laugh, cry, go to kindergarten, make it's boyfriend beat up someone who looked at it at a party, and go off to college, telling you what a great deckbuilder you were. Nobody likes babykilling.
Legacy seems cheaper in the long run, because a powerful idea can win in it for an extended period of time. So an initial $100 can turn out well in relation to other formats. $100 once just means booze for a month,or limited booze for 2 while I save, whereas the $75 every 6 months for standard is more like my ability to go to art museums or eat out or otherwise appear to be a usefull member of society. However, this is only true if your initial deck is put towards something that has some chops. In order to find out what types of strategies had the above-mentioned chops, I joined the source.

No need to go back to the original question. We have a more important matter to discuss here.

Anwar, after seeing that picture of you...
I love you. And not in a friendly way, although I think we're great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although I'm sure that's what you'll call it.
And it's not because you're unattainable. I love you. Very simple, very truly. You're the epitome of every attribute and quality I've ever looked for in another person.
I know you think of me as just a friend, and crossing that line is the furthest thing from an option you'd ever consider. But I had to say it. I can't take this anymore. I can't stand next to you without wanting to hold you.
I can't look into your eyes without feeling that longing you only read about in trashy romance novels.
I can't talk to you without wanting to express my love for everything you are.
I know this will probably queer our friendship -no pun intended- but I had to say it, because I've never felt this before, and I like who I am because of it.
And if bringing it to light means we can't hang out anymore, then that hurts me.
But I couldn't allow another day to go by without getting it out there, regardless of the outcome, which by the look on your face is to be the inevitable shoot-down.
And I'll accept that. But I know some part of you is hesitating for a moment, and if there is a moment of hesitation, that means you feel something too.
All I ask is that you not dismiss that -at least for ten seconds- and try to dwell in it. there isn't another soul on this f****** planet who's ever made me half the person I am when I'm with you, and I would risk this friendship for the chance to take it to the next plateau.
Because it's there between you and me. you can't deny that.
And even if we never speak again after tonight, please know that I'm forever changed because of who you are and what you've meant to me, which -while I do appreciate it- I'd never need a painting of birds bought at a diner to remind me of.

The boost has to do with the number of people realizing how financially consuming Standard and Extended are. While they toss out millions without ever thinking about it, Legacy wastes less than half that much.

I got told to come here by thefreakaccident on mws after some gg's, so I signed up, and after I met Willoe (also on mws) who told me about the funny MWS quotes thread I decided to start posting as well :) Thanks guys!
I like this place since it seems to be a frontrunner in Legacy strategy-development, moreso than any other place on the net.

I have been playing both eternal formats (Vintage and Legacy) for a long time, but I did not find Type 1.5 all that alluring until WotC separated the B&R lists and Legacy was born.
Recently, June 20th to be precise, one of my favorite formats was gutted. Vintage is no longer about pitting powerful strategies against each other, it has become Highlander with lands allowed as four ofs. In other words, Vintage is now GARBAGE...
I might as well lurk around here where things are interesting instead of TMD where we get to discuss the decks we were playing back in 2005, the $100.00 a piece replacement for Brainstorm (Strategic Planning), and what to run in the 15 slots not taken by restricted cards and lands in the latest deck, which by the way will probably have any half decent card restricted in due time.

As somewhat of a new member ...even though I've had this account for months, I've just seriously started posting. Pretty much I came because I heard of this place being good legacy forums, but didn't take an interest in the format until a few weeks ago when I realized of all the good tournaments in Upstate NY which is where I'm moving to this week.
And also, I haven't seen anyone insulting new members. Please, feel free to do so to me.

You see, one of these is a well-known funny line from a popular movie being used comically at an open invitation. The other is a completely unfunny "quote" that doesn't appear in Google. I'll let you decide which is which, but I'm going to leave saying Monty Python > you.

Either way, I generally looked at the cheapness of long term play. And this format fits my needs perfectly. Plus I really hate the new extended rotation policy.
