View Full Version : Original Duals "Printed" on MODO

Today's card of the day showed a Taiga, stating that it would be a reprint for "Masters Edition 2". A few questions:
1. This means they would almost HAVE to reprint the other duals, right?
2. What does this mean as far as prices go? Will the originals lose some value? Will we be able to pick up a playset of duals for cheap?
3. Do you think it is good or bad for the game to have such powerful/useful lands reprinted?
4. Will the masters edition set be legal in standard? (ie. will all formats see the use of the dual lands?)

discuss away!

It's magic online only.
And that answers all of your questions.

Every time they do something online-only people make these kinds of topics.

Hmmm.. Imagine Legacy would be totally playable online. I'm not so sure I would like that. Restarting a collection would surely suck.

Duals are gonna tank. I'm buying them all at 12 apiece, if anyone wants to sell them off now.

I'll be a prince and buy them all at 13 a piece, because i wouldn't want you guys to feel bad about it and am ready to share your pain.

I'll be an even bigger prince and buy peoples' REAL duals for 14, since it's obvious that everyone is going to just start playing with online, shiny, digital duals instead. PM me if you're interested.

Well, they're also doing Sea Drake, Mana Crypt, Imperial Seal, so maybe people can play some Legacy and perhaps a hair of Vintage on Magic Online.

I guess duals coming to MODO will wreck the price of Magic Workstation dual lands.

Significantly, Force of Will is already on MTGO. We're starting to get a reasonable playtest environment online.

(Imperial Recruiter was previewed too)

1) They are likely only getting the 5 allied duals this MED II. This means instead of Tropical Island, Scrubland, Plateau, Volcanic Island, and Bayou - you have to use Rav duals. This makes Burn better in Classic than in Legacy.

2) In addition to FoW, the other important items that exist are:

Phyrexian Dreadnought
Lion's Eye Diamond
Swords to Plowshares
Mishra's Factory
Brainstorm
Goblin Recruiter
Lightning Bolt
Hydroblast/Pyroblast
Hymn to Tourach
Nevinyrral's Disk
Armageddon
Moat
Berserk

3) There's no Goblin Lackey, Survival of the Fittest, or Daze. Tempest will give Intuition, Lotus Petal, Wasteland, and Ancient Tomb. And decent Slivers I guess. That's in December.

4) Skullclamp is unrestricted.

5) You still get 1x Flash, 1x Vampiric Tutor, and likely 1x Mana Crypt and Imperial Seal.

6) A few key old cards don't exist yet, notably Sinkhole.

My opinion:

I've played it for a long time, but stopped after Weatherlight was released and MTGO III came out. It's pretty awful.

Basically, it'll remain one of those formats where one steals builds from Legacy to port in to Classic with a fair amount of ease, but the huge grain of salt is sitting on it's back.

So far, while some stuff is cool, I see nothing that will ease the prevalence of linear decks in the Classic format. Affinity has everything including 4x Skullclamp, 4x Disciple, and 4x Vial. Burn gets free shocks. Dredge has everything. Combo isn't quite there yet, and won't be until Lotus Petal.

Also, Force of Will's exist in so small a quantity, they are selling for a boat load now. I stopped playing much Classic, but I left my Goyfs, fetches, and FoW's alone to give me the option to jump back in. Deeds, Mages, Chants, and Vindicates are cheaper but still way up there.

Lastly, at the schedule of the "retro-sets", we won't be getting through Masques block until like 2011 optimistically. 2012-2013 realistically. Unless MED III packs key cards from the Urza and Masques block, which will be 2009 to have most of it in place at the earliest.

Bottom line, there's no point in using it as a testing platform for Legacy when MWS exists.

It would be worth it, if you get at least a rough approximation.
I'm not talking about Classic, I'm talking about only playing Legacy matches. 0 Skullclamp, 0 Crypt, 0 Vampiric Tutor. Daze, Wasteland and Goblin Lackey are the big omissions; hopefully MED2 will fill in some gaps.

I'm talking about only playing Legacy matches.

I mean, I have the cards to play some near-true Legacy. But it's totally not worth me keeping the cards around for that purpose when I can just get people to test on MWS or in person with actual Legacy decks. It's certainly not worth the grand or so someone would have to slam down in the name of testing.

Also, the Spikes only come out for PE's. The testing room is filled with awfuls most of the time.

You missed the key detail about it "Online only". You failed to account for that critical detail. Some English Major you are.

I know next to nothing about MODO. Given that, am I correct in assuming that the only non-online part of MODO is trading in virtual cards for real ones? If so, then this all makes sense.

This seems like a good place to post this:

You can assemble current sets online and redeem for real ones. Sometimes it's profitable. You can't do Classic sets (Mirage Block through Masques Block as they become available or any of the Masters Editions sets).

If you think about it there's still much more missing to have a Legacy-like environment:
Price of Progress
Ancient Tomb
Skyshroud Elite
City of Traitors
Lotus Petal
Mox Diamond
Argothian Enchantress
Back to Basics
Replenish
Rishadan Port
Survival of the Fittest
Smokestack
Aluren
Ill-Gotten Gains
Intuition
Land Grant
just to name a few.
